I say "GIF" with a hard G because it is similar to "gift," a word that already exists, and it seems that most people also do, according to several surveys. I think that's because we treat it like a loanword, since it's a fairly recent addition to the English lexicon. There's a whole set of implied "rules" for how Americans collectively approach pronouncing loanwords (for example, trebuchet or uber or whatever) and a hard G sound is most consistent with those "rules" (which are actually more like conventions because they're not written down anywhere). See how the British pronounce "garage" vs how Americans pronounce it, they have different conventions for adopting loanwords than Americans and they tend to nativize words more than we do. This isn't really an "argument" for a hard G sound as much as it is an explanation for why I think it's so much more popular despite the creator saying it's a soft G. You'll notice that most loanwords that start with "G" tend to get assigned a hard "G" (guacamole, gaffe, gala, guillotine, etc)

okay so technically English is written using the latin alphabet. Therefore it follows some of Medieval latin's spelling rules. In Medieval Latin C and G are special letters and are pronounced 2 different ways depending on the vowel that follows. IF C or G is followed by A,O, or U you pronounce a hard velar plosive consonant. This would be the C in "cat" or and "G" in Gross. IF C or G is followed by a softer vowel E or I, you would change the sound. These are simply spelling rules in the medieval period which we haven't changed. These two sounds are S for C and J for G. that's why you say "Jeneration, Jiraffe, etc." and "Sease (Cease) and Sedar (Cedar). SO BRIAN IS TECHNICALLY CORRECT. IT IS "JIFF" LIKE THE PEANUT BUTTER. GET LINGUISTIC'D, NERDS. BRIAN PIN THIS SO THE PLEBIANS KNOW THE TRUTH.

Alright I’ll bite. Gif is not a word, it’s an acronym, so it’s not fair to compare pronunciation of words (e.g. giraffe, gin, what have you) to this acronym. The g stands for graphics, a hard g, so it stands to reason that the gif would follow suit. Also gif sounds better than jif. I rest my case.
