As an avid trout angler in Wisconsin's driftless region, I have found with trout, you will catch more fish working upstream. They face upstream, waiting for their food to float down to them. If you're walking downstream, they will see you and spook before you get a cast. You should cast and work your way upstream so A) they don't see you and B) you cast over them and they think your bait is their dinner. Cheers to a great video.
@majormattmason8408
@majormattmason8408 5 месяцев назад
As someone who fished brown trout in the Kinnickinnic River (River Falls, Wisconsin) for many years, I can attest that your information is 100% correct. When working a stream walk down as far as you intend to go and then fish your way back upstream. Always cast upstream and retieve you lure with the current. You'll catch 3X as many fish and bigger ones as well.
@nathanaelcoffman2859
@nathanaelcoffman2859 4 месяца назад
The access to the section he fishes in this video is only from upstream (unless you walk really far). So he could do it if he hiked all the way down first. But that would be the only way.

As someone who does almost no trout fishing, but wants to do more, I never thought I would learn more from the comments than the video, but it makes sense, thanks!
@majormattmason8408
@majormattmason8408 4 месяца назад
@@YFAwithTodd A couple more tips then. ;) This isn't always the case and applies especially to brown trout in my experience, but they prefer faster water. I caught way more fish from rapids and the edges of fast water than slow moving areas. That said, you never know when there's a nice one (or two) lurking in a deep, calm pool... My primary bait was panther martin spinners. I carried a variety of colors (mainly gold, silver and black blades). If they're not hitting those you can experiment with other lures. I used ultra light rods and high retrieve speed reels typically with 6 lb test line. I liked 4 lb test but would have quite a few breaks due to snags and (sometimes) from large fish. 6 lb test was my "sweet spot." I Never used snap swivels or leaders but tied my spinners directly to my line. Trout are fickle and I caught less fish when using swivels. And it goes without saying but you'll always catch more (and better) fish if you're off the beaten track. I usually walked 2+ hours downstream from town and worked my way back slowly. When I hit the most popular areas (those most heavily fished) I usually stopped fishing and headed home. Good Luck and Have Fun! :)

Trout aren't afraid to bite in the winter so its a great species to target while the others are less active!

@@NobleKorhedron Ah that does put a damper on it, in California the lakes stay the same year round, but during fall/winter in rivers and creeks we have to use barbless hooks and artificial lures only and can't keep them.

@@618Fishing you're welcome, I love browns myself so I'm happy to stock them, Also that gravel just below the park is an excellent spot to fish as well, especially in March to May, a lot of trout hold up in that deep water and I catch a lot on a fly called a mega worm aka a elongated mop fly, white, brown and chartreuse being my best colors Just gotta walk upstream on other side of bridge to flat area to cross the river to get to that gravel bar Come down again soon!

Caddis Fly you are 100% on...The Bighorn...awesome. Stayed at Polly's in Fort Smith a couple times and floated in a raft. I remember a sign telling you there were 5000 trout per river mile. You would hop in and if you stayed there long enough they would stage in the eddy behind your legs. Beautiful!

I love browns. I once hooked into a 36 inch, 10 pounder. I was only using 4 pound test. It finally landed itself after a 45 minute fight. Unfortunately I had to keep it because I gill hooked it. It's common in my area to pick up 2 or 3 pounders. I absolutely love them....
