Another one in the books and your Grand Reveal in La Jolla! It was exciting and inspiring to mix it up and use different rock and topdressings in this one! We even incorporated some tropicals! Thanks for watching, commenting and sharing!

We just moved to a new Central California Coast home, and there are 2 massive (5’ tall, 4’ wide at the base, 6’ wide at mid-foliage) bird of paradise shrubs that look terrible, are in the wrong place, and that haven’t been maintained in what looks like FOREVER, so we’re having them removed by someone who wants them for their landscaping. Thankfully, they have experience removing them, so that’s a big win for us AND them. I’ll get ONE cutting/root wad from them and put it in a container as an homage to the home’s history.

Since you will be keeping the lush plants I would keep the bird of paradise for repitition. Looks awesome Laura!

Dig, reduce and reset the Birds and be ready to to that again, kinda like sticks of fire etc. etc. Much easier to clean up the unattractive base areas. The repetition suggested above along the long sidewalk strip and the echo of the tropic colors in the back will be better for the continuity. The round rocks and the beach buttons are a refreshing and calming look!

Very true. The birds could be underplanted with the lush green foliage plants with pebbles scattered around them to give it a clean look. The birds are such statement and happy plants.

The driveway corner is gorgeous. And all the walkway and planter. The house and everything you've done is wonderful, and love mixing it with the tropicals. I'd say yes to the Birds (a classic) can't think of San Diego County without remembering them. Maybe halve off the front towards the street and plant a nice neat cover for the bottom. And maybe some Dwarf Birds here and there for color and continuity. 🎉

Beautiful job, Laura. I wasn't sure I was going to like the type of rocks & pebbles the homeowner had selected for the landscape & topdressing, but as you have said previously, it's good to try new things and this certainly is true in this installation. Regarding phase 2, I think you should remove the BoPs from the area you will be working on, only because you will be leaving that adjacent area in front alone and it already has BoPs in it. Your beautiful tapestries I think would look much better uninterrupted by BoPs. I love your idea for blowing out the private back patio with more tropicals (perhaps you can divide and rehome some of the BoPs from the front there)! Can't wait to see that fountain installed!

The button pebbles give a beautiful contrast against the hardscape and the color of the house🧡 I vote to keep the bird of paradise! I personally love bird of paradise but cannot have here in zone 8. I think these plants need to be divided every three or five years, sort of like hostas and agapanthus do. Beautiful grand revel 🙌🏻 Laura, thank you!

I like Birds of Paradise in other peoples yards😂 I can remember my parents in the early 70's having to tie a rope around one in our yard and pulling it out with the car... it was awful! Anyway... beautiful property and as always, you've added your magic touch. i think the owner made a beautiful decision with the beach pebble and the subdued boulders. Can't wait to see the other phases completed😁

Another beautiful garden Laura!! I think the owners should get rid of the jasmine on the beautiful iron fence line and do tapestry below. I do love bird of paradise but in a different area, use as a back drop not front and center. Love the rock choice by the clients, you said you had not worked with it before and it came out spectacular!! Can’t wait to see phase 2!

Laura, I love that you took on new medium (round rocks) and experimented with them - and it worked!!! I think this might be one of my fave installations in a while. Bird of Paradise - I really like them in the right spot. But they do need to be cut back/ cleaned up at the end of each winter to give space for the new growth.

Good thing it was raining, first because it washed everything off and it looks good, and second because you can see where/if there’s pooling. I’m partial to keeping the birds, mostly because I like how weird the flowers are. So, they should probably go. 😂 Beautiful reveal with phase one though.

Hey Laura. Very nice white Range rover you got. Have you though of adding Gpysum to clay soil. It break clay and improve drainage. Bird of paradise, use as background plant. And layer with smaller plant in front of it to hide the bottom half of it.

Bird of Paradise plants do require a ton of maintenance to keep their beautiful appearance. That said, once they are happy, they continue to grow to epic proportion and the blooms become overwhelmingly stunning for those of us who are visual people. Sometimes just one is enough to become the stunner of the street corner! That's my personal experience with this plant. They do happen to love a daily grooming and a good talking to. I did find that sunburn and wind was their enemy and Hummingbirds were their friends.

I love (LOVE) bird of paradise. But then, I'm from a decidedly not tropical area, so the novelty factor is high. Maybe you could stage some strategic boulders and/or pots around them to hide the base? Build up a small mounded berm and plant in front of them for some extra height? I'll endorse any strategy you use to keep the bird of paradise!

I mean can just pile some of those larger pebble rock up against the bird of paradise to cover the base it's only like 3 inches of ugly anyways. Could even throw down a few pieces of black rubble lava rock around it too with the larger pebble rocks between. Would kinda contain and frame it. She should grab some of the jasmine of the variety she likes and plant in those empty spaces now for it to take over then she can in a year cut out all the older wood plants that aren't as full at the base anymore. A jasmine sambac variety would be nice since it can bloom all the time if temps are nice and are the best fragrant jasmine. Could also work on replacing it with stephanotis vine they have bigger fat leaves that are more durable and last long and have clusters of jasmine fragrant flowers and branch and fill out very easily. But also easy to maintain and little cleanup because of the big fat leaves.

You could plant some jade or another thick succulent \ tapestry near the bird of paradise to hide the unsightly base. Those birds of paradise actually look much nicer than what i normally see (I am local in san diego)

I love birds of paradise plants. However I am from South Africa and they are indiginous to my country, so maybe I am biaised. The same goes for agapanthus and a lot of the aloes and rare succulents.

It feels strange that all the gardens are so open. Any stranger can enter your property, even walk into your back yard😮No real fence or barrier to keep strangers out. It does not feel right. I would not feel safe or comfortable with a property with no concrete fence or devils fork fence in the front of the property and then I notice there are no burglar bars on the windows or security gate on the sliding doors. I live in South Africa and when I watch these garden videos I wonder how you can live like that? It would freak me out!! 😂Thank you for the video and God bless! Enjoy your Passover weekend! ❤

I have succulents in the front and tropicals in the back as well ... Mangave Kaleidoscope mixes well with tropicals ... great color, handles the water fine and grows slower (doesn't bloom quickly) if shaded by taller plants or fencing.

The Birds have intriguing blooms and leaves but are high maintenance if you want them to look clean. Lots of deadheading spent blooms and then they grow and clump. Snails just love them. For my taste, succulents are better. Dinner plate aeonium and agave attenuata would be a nicer display for my taste and less maintenance.

When allowed to continue to grow and grow and grow ..they are overwhelming in giant clumps that really require a mechanical digger to remove. When kept in check they add great color and sculptural value. They, like many other plants are not "set and forget". I wonder if planting in pots would slow them down a bit?
