The Conservatives are planning to get rid of stamp duty for first time buyers on properties bought for under £425,000.
But Grant Shapps appeared to get the figure confused, suggesting stamp duty wouldn't apply for properties worth £450,000 or under. So only out by £25,000 at this point.
Pressed on the correct figure of £450,000, he said: "If you've got a number in front of you, you're probably right because I was saying it off the top of my head... You're right, it's £450 million." But, far from correcting himself, the Defence Secretary ended up even further away from the right number. £449,550,000 away from the right number...

When Diane Abbott fumbled the numbers in an interview with Nick he didn’t tell her the answer and asked her again and again to embarrass her. When it’s with Shapps he corrects him as soon as he makes the error, allowing him to correct it and swiftly move on. Disgusting.

Well it will still help you as you wouldn’t be paying stamp duty on the first £425k of your purchase, so would only pay it on £75k in the case of a £500k home. You’re talking as if you’ll get no benefit if the property you’re buying is worth more than £425k.

@@GG-xd9vc it is no benefit if you can’t afford to buy a house at £500k in the first place When you can borrow at most 3-4 times your yearly income, not counting the 10% deposit, to borrow £450k mortgage would required an income of roughly £115k a year at best case. Even if you’re buying with a partner that still means you both need a £60k+ wage each. If you’re buying by yourself, then you’re out of luck, and even if you both work in a relatively well paid field it’ll take years to get to a wage that’ll let you borrow what you need Average salary in London for a 22-29 year old is £35k. 47k for 30-39 year olds. Biggest barrier I found even outside of london was having a high enough salary to get a mortgage large enough for the house.

As a retired police officer I ask myself 'Is not about time that various members of the tory party,(particularly cabinet members over the past 14 years) were not properly investigated by the police and possibly put in front of the criminal courts for numerous offences'.I appreciate that the systematic destrution of our police service over the past 14 years or so would make this very difficult to achieve bearing in mind the now chronic shortage of trained detectives.I suppose most MPs who will shortly be removed will simply walk down to the other end of the building and pull in £300 quid'per'day expences as a member of the House Of Lords.

When you have seen £12billion wasted on NHS PPE, £3.5 billion on track & trace, HS2 balloon from sub £30 billion to £100billion +, Brexit costing the country £100 billion + per year… and so much other waste of public finances, whilst energy companies make record profits, MP’s get pay rises and unregulated income/benefits and still complain that they don’t get paid enough… yet question where money is going to come from when others announce policies is so disingenuous…I would wager cabinet and other top ministers have probably had income in the period of their tenure that far exceeds their salaries, and yet they still claim expenses even for toilet paper….!!! We live in very disappointing times, disingenuous and dishonest… truly sad

5% deposits for first-time buyers just increases demand and raises prices still further, meaning young people take bigger mortgages over longer times. It only helps banks and existing homeowners.
