If your child is saying, "School is boring," it might be time to consider a change. Boredom can stifle curiosity and kill a love for learning, leading to low motivation and underachievement. Traditional schools often focus on grades and test scores, which can diminish a child's natural desire to learn. We've found that homeschooling offers a tailored learning experience that encourages intrinsic motivation, allowing children to explore their interests deeply and grow into independent, confident thinkers. If your child feels unchallenged, discouraged by grades, or struggles with low self-esteem in school, homeschooling could provide the nurturing and personalized environment they need. Next week we are diving into the specific methods we've found helpful when homeschooling our eldest and our learnings/failures along the way! Thanks for watching/listening and let us know your thoughts!

My husband and I are often told that we’re so fortunate that we get to homeschool. When in reality, we Sacrifice so we can homeschool. We live off of one income, smaller home, simple vacations, limit spending, etc. Because nothing is more important than raising and educating our own children. The flexibility and togetherness we experience as a family is amazing.
@jessicaely2521

No. You are fortunate. Most people can't live off of 1 income. For example me. I have a 1 bedroom house for 4 people, I have 1 car, I haven't been on a vacation in 3 years, the spending we do is absolutely necessary (gas, food, health insurance, car insurance, etc), I cut my family's hair, I color my hair, and I haven't bought a new wardrobe for 10 years. I had to break down and buy 2 new bras. The last time I bought bras was 5 years ago.

Yes homeschooling is against the grain and very selfless & sacrificial. Public school is a privilege BUT dangerous in my opinion.

I don’t disagree with your perspective but you have to acknowledge it’s from a privileged standpoint. As a mom of a disabled child, homeschooling isn’t in her best interest. She doesn’t qualify for Medicaid and private insurance caps her therapy - without public school, she’d be at a major disadvantage.

Oh man! I’m dealing with the same have child with hyper autism . The online charter school for my area gives govt funding for speech therapy and OT and $1k for school supplies, but there’s a waitlist right now. I’m on the wait list, but homeschooling with free online resource Easy Peasy

I have a child with a disability. She has an IEP and she goes into public school for 1.5 hours a day 4 days a week for services. She is homeschooled for everything else. She is under the homeschool umbrella as well, so it’s nice we just have to adhere to our states homeschool rules. Paying taxes, it’s your right to still have services if needed.

This would have been way too much for me as a kid. I would have acted out, desperately needing space from my parents. My school wasnt even that great (a private christian school, it was pretty awful in many ways) but at least it gave me the experience of seeing myself outside the context of our family dynamic. My teachers saw things in me that my parents were blind to. I learned how we were all different but also the same by growing up with my classmates. My parents were wrong about SO much and I wish they had been more humble. They thought they knew it all, they felt entitled to control too much. Kids learn more by watching you than they learn by being told things by you. Live a life that fulfills you and they will likely do the same, in their own unique way.
@americandreamrevival
@americandreamrevival 17 дней назад
It definitely depends on the home dynamic, but even though we homeschool, our kids are exposed to teachers and peers just not in a typical school setting. It's a big misconception that kids who are homeschooled just sit at home with mom and dad. It's so different these days. We will do a follow up podcast to all the common beliefs about homeschooling. If I was just "stuck" at home with my parents all day- I wouldn't have liked it either lol
@jjgems5909

Most homeschooling parents actually care about their kids education and development. You’re scenario is different because your parents didn’t care or see your potential. Also their are options for homeschoolers that allow for a more classroom type setting for kids who need some of that. Homeschooled kids are not literally home all day lol. It’s not that black and white. Honeschool parents are able to tailor their kids education more and see if they need more or sometimes less socialization. It’s not for everyone.

@@americandreamrevivalWhen I say 'space,' I don't mean the physical space of the home. Im referring to a child's right to have mental and emotional space away from the parents chosen worldview and values.

I love hearing from you guys and these discussion style podcast episodes from you guys. I never once considered homeschooling as a potential educational option for my children. To me it was something so strange, so fringe (but then I guess we became strange and fringe ourselves 😂) . For me and my husband, Covid opened our eyes to so much, especially pertaining to how the norm is to divide family and then also education itself. And then, getting into how the education system was set up, learning about it, it’s like opening up a can of worms. You just cannot unknow what you know. We are so blessed to be able to homeschool and I pray to God it stays that way for the entirety of our children’s education. ❤

I live in Canada and I do not know anyone personally who home schools their children. I know there are people who do it but it's not common at all. I am always interested in the vast differences between the US and Canada that seem to be much more apparent in recent years - politics, the medical system, schools etc. I do think that the Canadian school system is more respected by parents. Our teachers are paid very well and have excellent benefits and pensions. Being a teacher is a very difficult job these days that is for sure!

@@erwanpestiaux8241oh definitely not an attack on teachers. I just think that compared to the US the Canadian education system is better funded by the government. It’s definitely not perfect and there is always room for improvement here in Canada. My MIL was a special education teacher in a very low income area so I have had many conversations about education 😊

I went to a public school from K-12 as a special ed kid. My school district (K-12) had ESL and special education classes. Special Ed classes had a spectrum of kids who had IEPs or 504s. For kids in a particular education class, there was an aide in their classes, or they were in their own classroom with their own teacher. We had science labs and discussions about stories. Sure, we had papers to write and tests/quizzes to take, but the district had a national curriculum to follow that said in "X grade, students must know a,b,c,d." In my experience, in the lower grades (elementary), we only spent a little time on worksheets. As far as I remember, it was a lot more time listening to read aloud, learning societal norms through peer interaction, especially in kindergarten, sandboxes, painting to learn colors, and things like that. In middle and high school, electives meant options like Home Ec, Wood Shop, and Early Ed (my high school had a preschool attached). My parents put the most worksheets in front of me after I came home from the school bus. I spent a lot of time doing extra worksheets to enhance the math and writing I wasn't excelling at in public school. My parents also put in time on the weekends to give me tutors. I went to Chinese School where I learned Mandarin, did Chinese Folk Dance, and did math worksheets. That's how Asian Americans seem "so smart". Our parents are putting resources towards education - collectively valued in Asian households. So, each district is different, and each family is different. To begin with, each child's attitude towards education is different.

The homeschool verses public school debate. 😂 I personally would have loved being homeschooled bc I use to get stomachaches everyday in school due to anxiety. But my parents were in no way capable of that. 😂 My own kids (one being extroverted) love school, mostly the socializing part but their teachers and learning too. I don't have much support though so for me to work full time and give them enough attention it would be really hard on both of us. I come from a poor family and when my parents watch my kids they put them in front of TV and give them candy. Then blame my kids for acting up. I just couldn't do that to them and it would be impossible for me to do while working at times. On the other hand I know people who homeschool their kids. They were homeschooled and they come from a family where education is a priority. Some have 5 teachers in the family that help watch the kids. I really think it's a privilege to be able to homeschool your kids. My husband and I are the 1st generation that went to college in our families. We raise our kids completely different from us and have to learn everything from scratch as we value education.

So many parallels between your journey and mine!! I couldn’t be happier that God has pulled us out of the matrix and laid a huge conviction on my heart to homeschool my 3 children. I think many use public school as a form of free childcare and it’s sad, really. I do think MOST kids would far much better being homeschooled, with a few exceptions (single parents etc)
@munozjess

There will always be pros/cons to all learning styles and choices. Homeschooling option has become a very privileged option. Most American families are in financial situations where both parents need to work, therefore public school is their only option. Not everything in school is all that bad or a red flag. As a parent, you also have the responsibility of teaching your child core skills outside of their typical school. I do like the point of preserving the youth’s innocences for as long as possible.

Honestly I think it USED to be a very privileged option, now it is very common, despite people's hardships there are free options now. Ever since COVID, homeschooling has been more attainable than ever.

I completely respect your opinion. I don't think it's the responsibility of schools to assume parental duties, a view likely held by many parents who entrust their children to educational institutions. As a homeschooling mother of two daughters with differing personalities, now in our fourth year, I prioritize nurturing their unique traits. My older daughter, aged 9, is initially shy, naturally empathetic and nurturing, despite experiencing some anxiety. My younger daughter is carefree and playful. Through consistent support and encouragement, my husband and I foster confidence and positivity, emphasizing self-esteem development and individuality over public speaking skills. From my perspective, confidence emerges with maturity. It's essential to recognize that introversion and shyness are legitimate characteristics, but it's illogical to blame parents for their children's discomfort speaking in front of a crowd. Personalities are diverse.
@BaudelaireOrphan1
@BaudelaireOrphan1 10 дней назад
Yes!!! My oldest daughter's are like yours in the same order. Everyone says, " Lilly (eldest) is just too sheltered, she's too shy, she needs to stand up for herself, she needs to socialize..." mean while my following daughter is carefree and very social, she loves to be around people and will attract people to herself. I cannot stand that they think shyness is brood homeschool, shyness is her, it's who she is, and that's OK! We try to encourage her to be more open and expressive, which she has come a long way. But people need to govern her time to grow!

Just because a kid is at home learning doesn't mean there isn't a teacher. Your rich parents hire a tutor that was a teacher to teach their children. There's also virtual schools. Kids sign into Zoom and learn from a teacher. For kids who do have parents that teach them, some or most states (I don't know for sure and I'm to lazy to look it up) monitor what parents are teaching. For Florida you have to let the school district know you are homeschooling before you start home schooling, have 180 days that you are teaching, you have to keep records (keep a log of educational activities and samples of any work the child creates), and lastly there's annual evaluation. With the annual evaluation the parent can choose to do this through a student achievement test, a state student assessment test, or a psychological evaluation.
