It’s Your Call is a weekly ACBL Series, in which Kai and a special guest put their heads together to try and find an optimal solution to a multiple-factor bidding problem!
This week, Kai welcomes Reece! An up-and-coming colligate Bridge player. She has only been playing for 6 months and in those six months, she has learned an astronomical amount of Bridge! She plays for the UAberta colliegate Bridge team which finished 7th of 18 teams in the Colligate Bridge Bowl in the Toronto NABC. She is also the president of the UAlberta Bridge club creating initiatives that will get more people interested in Bridge on campus. Today we test her 6 months of Bridge experience in a weak no trump bidding problem! And she absolutely smashes it!
Please mention your thoughts in the comments about what you would do in this Bridge Problem!

I would transfer so the subsequent problem of being able to pass 2S doubled would not occur. Yet, Kai, your defense on this board was strong. Pard's value double is a dangerous one because of the concealment of the 5 card heart suit. Oh, yes, playing transfers over weak NT's is a better treatment because of the invitational and game forcing sequences. The problem with double barrel Stayman with 2 of a major as a drop is that the 2D GF stayman gets overloaded with too many hand types.

I'm super impressed that Reece is Canadian and can play weak no trump as well as strong after only playing for 6 months. Incredible - hats off.

Same! The only thing I'd correct about the comment is Reece is Canadian. Just mentioning it for clarity.

I read one modern author's defense of the weak NT system. He actually feels that it should be taught as the default system to beginners! However, if you're not playing in an ACOL-heavy area where weak NT is the norm, it seems like not learning 15-17 1NT will put you at a disadvantage if you're learning to play socially in an area where most people play strong NT.

even THINKING of bidding over 2H is an overbid. absolutely NUTS.

With that hand you are usually better transferring. People might consider playing variable no trump.

I like weak NT, but even if you are only going to play strong NT it can be useful to have played weak NT a bit so you understand what it is like when opponents play it. I find that most people who have never played weak NT get too fixated on opponents "stealing from us" and start competing too much on weak hands and not as constructively as they need on strong hands but playing weak NT helps with that. I like playing 1NT instead of hearts with the hand that was shown here due to the weak suit and the strong hand where you have the balance of the points and enough time to set up the heart suit if that's where your source of tricks are but aren't forced into it if partner has just 2 hearts. If you take the same shape but drop two of the three top cards so it is a weak hand now I'd transfer as the hand is less likely to be a source of tricks. One other reason for not acting with the actual hand is my experience is if you are right to play in your major, especially when it is hearts and you have short spades, you often help the opponents find their fit. It is often harder for the opponents to come in if you haven't shared your shape (the preemptive value of 1NT).

The biggest difference between kai playing south and Reece playing south is their partner - Kai’s partner bids on anything. Reece’s partner is Kai’s partner’s partner

U know how confusing this sounds to the random viewers of ACBL… but also Kai’s partner’s partner changes their relative level of insanity in their bidding depending on their partners bidding style and declaring skill (u know this)

Weak NT is simple. I don’t play transfers so 2H and 2S can be drop bids. That also allows two way stayman. Playing this system, partner should have transferred. Partner Doubling after 2S seems wrong. A weak no trump opener only has half a bid after opening.
