What makes it worse is that Cody and May didn't actually have to do this because Rose's tears didn't transform them back. They made their daughter cry for nothing.

i was expecting them to get up there and be like “we can’t possibly kill her, she’s too adorable!” but they really just went straight for it.

After rose starts crying her parents bathe in her tears and cheer. This game is funky

I'm probably the least squeamish person I know when it comes down to gore and mutilation, yet somehow murdering an innocent elephant full of cotton nearly made me throw up.

For all of those who are sad, just thought I’d let you know that in the after credit scenes it shows her sewed back together with a bandaid on her head

You know what makes this so bad? It's the fear Cutie experiences being hunted down leading to her prolonged torturing and subsequent death. Taking something innocent and pure and making it suffer for what leads to an empty cause is the worst. I feel bad just watching this.

What makes this moment so brilliant is that up to this point Cody and May had to fight Rose’s toys, so you the players are geared up for another boss battle like Moon Baboon. But then the game makes Cutie the Elephant the most sweet and innocent character, and you’re forced to murder her. This is like the Pixar version of Spec Ops: The Line.

Legit never felt bad about killing a video game character until this. That’s what makes this game so incredible though. The shock you feel from not expecting this to happen. The game is truly a masterpiece. It makes you feel like a complete piece of shit.

So personally I used to sleep with a stuffed elephant as a kid, I still have him to this day and im in my 20's, this scene kept me up all that night hearing cuties cry, I legit felt dirty and evil, thinking of what would happen if that was my little old stuffed ellephant

This made me hate the main characters a little bit. Randomly deciding that making her cry was the cure without any proof and doing this horrible thing to this poor elephant when surely there were other options and then not seeming to care too much after...

This is where the game went from super fun and lighthearted to fucking sad. Cutie deserved so much better, such a genuinely good and gentle creature. And we killed it.

Me and the wife had to stop, pause, think, and was depressed ...... I had to smoke a cigarette before and after and my wife had a drink ........that was honestly traumatizing

I feel so bad seeing Cutie go through this. Hopefully, she gets fixed in the end. Or they make amends at the end while Cody & May are still dolls.

I couldn't do it... I usually have no issues with hurting people in games because they did something to deserve it, but this doll, her voice... Her pleas, her just wanting to be friends, no violence nature at all... And I found myself unable to go pass this part. This is the first time I've even felt this way about hurting a game character.

I felt super bad when me and my friend did that to her I felt like I should turn off the game

I literally had to take both controllers and finish the scene because my fiance refused to help me murder this poor elephant, I was so determined to finish this game with them that I committed the horrible act alone after her leg came off. I have never felt so disturbed by a mandatory scene in a video game 😭

Why is no one talking about the creepy background melody? That makes the scene even worse

This scene is perversely horrible, as it affects both the psychological (humanity) and childhood, not to mention that you see the innocence of the Cutie Elephant (who was wrongfully killed) and also the child who cries for her loss. I was caught off guard, I felt terrible.

This part sadly ruined the game for me and my partner and we stopped playing soon after... I do feel you have to LIKE the lead characters you are playing in a game to take them to the end, but they were unlikeable to begin with and by this point they were detestable ... And the fact they showed zero remorse just felt weirdly uneasy. We honestly felt really shitty afterwards and couldnt enjoy it thereafter. Pity.

Wife and I are playing through this and we both feel like absolute garbage. Man, I have spent many save files hunting down every NPC I could in some games, but this made me feel like I need therapy. Still, this game is a masterpiece. AND THERE BETTER BE A RESOLUTION FOR CUTIE BY THE END OF THIS GAME.

When I was little, due to my medical condition, I used to get very high fevers, sometimes to the point where I was delirious. I can barely remember them, but one that I do was this one time I was convinced my toys had feelings and would get really upset if I didn't love them enough. Even now, as a grown man, I still get emotional over it, it must have given me a complex or something, so as you can imagine this scene was gut wrenching for me. I'm man enough to admit I cried like a baby.

This scene shocked me more than any of the deaths in Last of Us Part 2

Finished this game with my brother last night. I didn’t think I would but I ended up crying lol. I guess something about her pleading and just wanting to be friends hit me. I wouldn’t replay that part again.

It's kinda scary that a kid's toy knows the concept of death so well

Reminder everyone: This is a "family-friendly" game according to the Game Awards.

Even the reason for doing this is awful on many levels. Not only are they... y’know... committing a murder on a sentient being as it begs for it’s life but their doing it to *make their fucking daughter cry* . They, at this point, would rather hurt their daughter and permanently mutilate something she loves rather than even think of getting along. They bathe in their daughter’s tears and rejoice in glee that her pain will free them from this magical session of marriage counseling they desperately need. To be clear I do not hate the game. I love it and the very dysfunctional couple I’m playing as. I’m just having a big think about this scene for obvious reasons.

This whole thing could have been resolved by them going “okay cutie we need you to play dead or something.”

I have never felt so immoral in my life than playing through this scene, I felt like I was actually killing a child and it was terrible. I felt a guttural rejection in my stomach when playing this and what made it worse was that it went on for minutes that felt like an eternity and they made you tap y for every time you ripped off her arms. I genuinely thought I knew the true feeling of guilt before I played this but I did not. Whats also bad is that they just move on as if that scene was completely normal and necessary, a scene where the parents rip apart an innocent child to make their own child cry and when they succeed they're HAPPY but when it doesn't work they say 'we are stuck like this' showing they only care about them selves

Biggest regrets of 2021. Buying this game for my kids as a Christmas gift.. I though its a family game until my younger kid tell me they killed a nice elephant that begs for mercy..

This was by far the most heartbreaking scene I’ve ever seen in a game/movie. When we needed to drag her to the edge and she was begging for mercy I started crying and covered my eyes because it was just to hard for me, and I’m 19 yrs old. I have never cried because of the game before in my life.

Me and my friend did this scene a few hours ago. We both felt really bad about killing her and had to take a little break. In a game like this i never thought we would see something as dark as this. I usually like dark tones and themes and think it makes the game or movie better but a game like this just doesn't suit it at all.

This is darker than The Last of Us 2 prologue...

This tone of this game's writing is all over the place, so I guess it makes this stand out more. It feels like a murder scene from Telltale's The Walking Dead where you have to make a hard choice. But then, in that game you always had to talk about those decisions and get judged for them by other characters; there's no remorse or any kind of follow-up in this. What's more, this scene is pretty much murder of an innocent child by two adults, which, correct me if I'm wrong, Telltale's The Walking Dead never came close to touching.

It almost feels like playing KH in the world of winnie the pooh but instead of having a wholesome and cute adventure with the friendly creatures you have to brutally murder them while they're begging for their lifes to reach the next level. This is so freaking psychopathic and sadistic... Wh... What am I even playing here!?

Sometimes, allegory is really subtle and works quietly to add a level of nuance in the background. And sometimes, you play two parents slowly torturing the living incarnation of their child's innocence to death because it suits their adult agenda.

this part of the game made me cry, whole time I was expecting her to morph into something evil so that it would be justified but it wasn't :(

I found this soo disturbing i refused to do it, my husband took over and i left the room just like no im not doing that. ever since this happened i now have a hatred towards cody and may and want them to fail.

The WORST thing ive had to do in a game ever. My gf and i were crying so hard. She didnt deserve that.

Just finished playing this level with my husband, and we both feel traumatised. This is easily the most evil thing I've ever had to do in a game, and I played the No Russian CoD level as a kid.

We beat this part on stream with my wife and I both basically awestruck and in horror the whole time. They didn't even really feel bad, they were just hung up on it not working and didn't learn anything. We kept going, but they don't address it and still don't learn anything. Cody and May are two if the WORST parents I've ever seen and we're supposed to be rooting for them even though they've got their heads jammed so far up their asses that light cannot penetrate. We kinda just watched the ending since, after that, we might just return the game. Poor Cutie. Worst thing I've ever done in a video game I think.

Divorce consultants should let couples with children watch this and the other symbolic scenes. Let them picture out themselves as Cody and May and their children as Rose. I wonder how much of an effect it would have.

I cried like hell when I played this the first time, I didn't want to kill Cutie at all. The game really wants to make you feel bad when you rip Cutie's leg and ear off. This has to be one of the most messed up scenes in any video game I've ever seen.

I started this game recently with a friend, and when we got to here, I barely even wanted to touch my controller. Even now, after a few hours, I'm still emotional just even thinking about this scene. Hell, I'm fighting through tears just to write this. This scene is great, but god damn, it's the ultimate killer of childhood innocence. Just wow.

The fact that they did this to deliberately make their daughter cry is even more fucked up

Why couldn’t they explain why they needed to kill her?! This makes me mad and upset!

Why this is so dark: 1. The song turn to slow. 2. She losing cotton when we drag him. 3. She trying to make friend with May and Cody even tho they darg him to Death.

I came here to see if anyone else was traumatised by this scene. Glad me and my bf aren't the only ones. I felt so bad I went and got my old elephant plushie out of the garage and put it in my room

Why.. Just why this scene exist??? When they finally found Elephant I thought what they could find another way or whatever but not THIS... And then it’s really intentionally that explicitly cruel (No only they just killed elephant but tear it apart while it’s begging for it’s life..)

Call me a horrible person but i completely understood what this entire sequence is trying to show us. They were only acting on what they thought was right. Let's all be reminded that Cody ang May are going through having divorce. They were thinking that this is what is best for their daughter. They both know that their daughter doesn't want them to go through it but they're still planning to do it, anyway. This is perfectly demonstrated in this part of the game. They were in agreement that "killing" Cutie will make Rose cry and break the spell. Just as any, well-intended divorce, are trying to achieve, right? I am not all against divorce. Hence I said, well-intended. What I meant when I coined that are those marriages that well... didn't just work. No beating each other, and the likes. We should all be aware that in any divorce, the child(ren) is(are) always the collateral damage. No matter how hard we try to make sense of it to them, it will always haunt them, in one way or another. Had they wish to patch things up, is a very tough decision to make. It's not stupid to say that (some) couples wished to stay for the kids. Because when you decide to build a family, it's no longer about you or your partner... it's about your kids.

Okay Okay, who in the right mind thinks this barbaric stuff belongs in a cute game?!? Did one of the developers had a horrific moment like this in their childhood?

“The elephant” in the room is that they were both so selfish and self centered that they would destroy their daughter’s toy for themselves, just as they would destroy the home by getting divorced due to their own selfishness. Well done…not sure how many people caught it. It was a beautiful allegory.

I've seen and done all sorts of messed up things in games before and just kept going but this BROKE me. Legit couldn't stop sobbing until after we got to the next area entirely

This was really hard to watch. I've brutally kill people in manhunt, hit prostitutes with a bat before driving a knife in the gut in GTA , killed my infected semi zombie comrades in mgsv(still have PTSD) but this is f*ed up.

Just why? this scene just seems both sad and pointless and looks like it was put in for no other reason than shock value and to get a reaction from the players I was told that there was at least dark humor where is the humor in killing the toy elephant and making there daughter cry this just comes off as shitty people doing shitty things bad writing if you ask me

I really thought they would have considered something else when they finally got to the elephant, but this is much more memorable.

Those two literally killed a CHILD just because they need to make THEIR DAUGHTER cry. I understand that to break the spell they need tears, but this must be HAPPY TEARS. Those two are really blind to their daughter feelings.

What really suprises me, is the fact that someone as pure and innocent as Cutie actually knows the word "kill" and it's meaning

its too much of a tonal shift. i understand the analogy, but this sort of pointless gratuitous cruelty seems like its more for shock value than making a nuanced statement. it works in that it gets a reaction, but i dont think it goes much more than that. also speaks to how desensitized people are to video game violence when its not towards something we typically associate with children.

I'm glad I found this before I bought it for myself and my 7 y/o.

Real talk.. Just got up to this part with my brother and THIS was honestly more disturbing than The Last of Us 1 and 2 combined. To the point where this one scene was just way too much. I genuinely didn't like this one single bit and in my personal opinion? This game just has dropped a few points for me. I mean don't get me wrong, it’s still an amazing game but because of this one scene, it just made me lower my overall score for this game.

This game has a great soundtrack, listening to the happy melody on the piano turn into a detuned nightmare when ghe queen finds out she's going to die is slightly unsettling

the idea is that it symbolizes how a divorce can Brutally break apart the innocence of a child. There's selfish implications of a divorce that can tear a child apart without the parents even caring or knowing. In this game particularly, the child is put by the way side for the selfish desires of the parents who didn't even try intitially to improve their marriage. That's the whole point of this scene is to make you feel for the child because logically, this is how she is feeling inside with her parents doing what they're doing. This is truly summarized when you see them bathing in her tears and celebrating

This is incredibly hard to watch. I'm 28, and can't even imagine how I would have reacted to this if I was a little girl who stumbled upon this game or saw this on RU-vid...I would have been absolutely devastated.
