Scanning film at home has come a long way and every now an then there is a new product coming out that is brilliant. The new scanning device by Valoi is such a product and even though my unit is a prototype it already delivers and was a joy to use. It makes home scanning more accessible and more effortless which is great and most likely very appreciated by the film shooter community.
See you soon in the next one!

I've been doing this for years. First with a Nikon D800E and an ES-1, nowadays with a Fuji XT-3 and a Nikon ES-2 but always with my trusted Micro-Nikkor 2,8/55 mm. I bought in 1990 and had it CLA'd two times in the meantime (the double-helicoid needs more care, love and affection than other, less complex constructions). Always sharp to the grain! And instead of JPG or 8Bit Tiff, as most often supplied by scanning-services, you are getting real RAW with lots of depth to work with and you can work with the results in your normal workflow in your favourite RAW-converter, Lightroom, C1, whatever.

The Nikon unit is lacking the light source and that is a major plus for the Valoi!

Awesome to see the prototype out in the wild! Thank you! We really thought of you when we made it - the on-the-go street lifestyle goes hand-in-hand with the compact size 😍

You can see in some of his captures that there looks to be some curl -- not a perfectly flat capture. How will you solve this? A great idea and exactly what I'd love to use, especially if you add sprocket capture. But not having it flat seems like a non starter
@mrnavarropablo
@mrnavarropablo Год назад
@@douggottlieb Could it be some distortion from the lens?

Interesting but 2 things spring to mind. 1: fingerprints on negatives? 2: how is the negative kept flat?

@@PeterOberhuber-we3xz By summer we will have them out. The final model name hasn't been decided, but our naming is very logical and won't be hard to spot. "easy35 Slide Holder" or something in that realm. To be clear, it will just be an accessory to the easy35 currently on offer.

This is flipping awesome. I do shoot a lot of medium format but if it can come under $250 then I think it’ll be worth it for how simple it is. Right now I scan with a flatbed and it takes forever

It should be less than that. Currently you can back it for 159€!

If I was still shooting film, this could be tempting. I used to use an old Olympus OM slide copier mated to the Olympus macro bellows and the 80mm macro lens for scanning 35mm negatives, and slides. Worked similar to this, but was bulkier and still required a separate light source. I’d be curious to see how many different macro lenses they could mate this to. Might be more universal to set it up like a macro bellows extension to vary the distance from the lens for different focal lengths and sensor sizes and use adapter rings where necessary. Cost of course would go up…

I have a simple one similar from the 1990’s. no lens needed it has its own dedicated tube. Just needs an (Old) Olympus to Sony E adapter and goes on directly to the camera body. Use flash or other light source. Cost if you could find one £30. Perfect copies every time.

Amazing! I've been shooting a tiny Rollei 35 SE for the last two weeks. One roll of HP5+ in two weeks. Waiting for Mr. Cad to develop and scan. Alternatively Ilford XP2 Plus is C-41 so in an "emergency" minilabs can process it.

Hi! Thanks for this video, very useful! Keep up the good work! This decice is very interesting. However I cannot avoid thinking that the JJC chinese copy of the Nikon ES-2 (but including a 6500K 95CRI LED light) seems to be essentially the same, maybe even better, more flexible and lighter, at half the price ¿? Has anybody had the opportunity to compare them in real life? I would be really interested in knowing a first hand experience. Best regards from Spain!

@REMY.C.

NEEDED!!! I think a gear to advance the film would be cool because the insertion seems to be a bit fiddly and maybe some kind of rubberized pressure rollers inside so the film is perfectly flat. For the tube that connects to the front of the camera, does it just screw on the filter thread? Are there adapters to fit certain diameters like we have on filters? Will it be compatible with 6x6 or 645? Does the top come off with some kind of hinge so it can be opened to blow-off dust and eventually replace the battery?
@therealsirrobin
@therealsirrobin Год назад
I don't think that it would work with mf. Yes, it just screws in the filter thread. It is very light, so that shouldn't cause any problems.

An absolute non-starter for me - and I have a very big interest in scanning 35 mm film: I have more than 200 film-rolls worth of images. Sadly my film strips are one frame long and are mounted in cardboard holders......

Thanks a lot for that recommendation. You are scanning a film negative to the memory of, say, a 40mp digital camera? An in-depth review of the gadget might be necessary before I'd buy one. It looks a bit intricate.

Nothing new ... I use a Kenro slide / zoom copier from the 80s. The unit you show is basically the same but 30 / 40 yrs later on. Great unit though, but the Kenro doesn't need a macro lens, just the camera body.... The plus side of the Veloi is that that light source.
