Oh the shame gremlins were raging for this one! I share with you some footage that was taken over a year ago. It was meant to be a training video but it definitely didn't go to plan.
But I feel in a good place with Zac and also myself so I wanted to share this to show the realities.
Sometimes things don't always go smoothly and it's easy to doubt yourself and your abilities in these moments. But it's all completely normal and happens to everyone. It's just not many people who show the lows.
I am not sure I covered everything in this video but I gave it a go!

I think every single person that ever had a young horse went through periods like this! I always had lessons with my young horses because of these periods because it really helps to have someone beside you to tell you this is pretty normal and guid you through this stage. My last young horse had the habit of bolting of bucking and just screaming.. It shocked me to my core when he did that the first time because I'd never met a horse that did that.. My instructor hadn't either so the first thing I did was call a vet to check him out to be sure it wasn't caused by pain or discomfort.. He was totally fine physically but mentally he was net very steady.. I started doing more ground work with him to prepare him more for the work under the saddle and just took little steps.. Kept riding him with an instructor twice a week but just took it very slow and after 2 months he was a perfect, well behaving young horse that was full of confidence what helpt me believing in myself again.. Nobody is perfect, no horse is perfect.. You will always have good days and bad days but never start doubting yourself to the point you get stuck.. There's absolutely no shame in asking someone to help you or be your "mirror"

Can totally relate from when I backed my youngster. It’s a total learning curve of getting to know each other between horse and rider and a lot of pressure to put yourself under with a hot youngster. What a talented horse look forward to seeing how far he goes with you! Well done for having the confidence to share your experience.

Thankyou. I needed to see this and hear the message in this video. I suffer with a lack of self belief and my young mare is challenging to ride and work with at times which doesn’t help. But my New Years resolution is to banish negative self talk and to surround myself with people who help build me up and make me believe in myself x thankyou for showing us even professionals have moments where they doubt themselves too. Here’s to the next year with all your horses, I know you will do even more great things xx

Yes definitely someone on the ground helps, even if they are not experienced. It gives you confidence when working through how your horse is. Remember too that unless your doing a live video, you can scrap whatever you like, the horse and you come first no matter what. I don’t think you did anything wrong, as you say now you know him you would have done things differently but it takes time to know the horse. Every hors teaches us and usually its stuff about ourselves. I really enjoyed OTD tv. I do like just watching you ride too, you can do voiceovers later if necessary. Life is a journey. Love what you do.

I feel like having someone confirm you are doing the right thing helps so much. Even when you usually do the right thing. If you start doubting that, you start losing your confidence and start making small mistakes. I'm not nearly as expereinced as you but I do feel like I can trust my own judgement more.

Thank you so much for this! I have a green mare (not young, she is 9 years old) and she has a tendency to be sharp and run off. It's reassuring to see professionals having the same issues as us amateurs, as when we only see the good rides, it feels like it's 'personal' rather than the reality of horses.

Great ride, thanks for sharing. All of us that start young horses under saddle occasionally have less than spectacular days. Years ago I had a similar ride in a Material Class. The Judge took me aside and said,in Europe only the best riders get to start the young horses. My reply,”well around here the best riders don’t have balls enough to do this work, that’s why I’m doing it “. Keep up the good work.

Its interesting, this caught my eye not as a rider but strictly as a trainer (working with Great Danes). Totally different species but I know that feeling once your confidence slips then sort of gets up a head of steam. Knowing when to back off the self criticism is so hard when it catches you off guard like that. Not the same but I was feeling so comfortable in some of the amazing agility tricks I was doing with my pack as a team (for my own fun). Then I took on a very complicated female and wow, that shook my confidence badly. I wish now I had those second set of eyes from my mentor to snap me out of it before months of beating myself up. It develops a life of its own especially after getting hurt doing stuff that was so easy with the rest of my pack. You want to be your best and not damage the animal or their self confidence. You end up thinking"I've just ruined this animal" so I see many similar things even in your breathing that are strictly seeing the confidence bleed out of you. Glad you shared these vids, because once we stop feeling embarrassed of our learning curve, we're in the saddle again so to speak

I Love How you still tried to stay calm while he was bolting and going a little crazy! Most riders would have not treated or talked to their horse that calmly! I was riding a horse from this woman who had like 7 horses and one time I watched her ride one of her younger horses, and the horse was anxious and started bolting and what she did was just give him a big slap on the head and then he obviously stopped but I was so shocked as to how she treated that horse. So it really surprised me that you talked so sweetly to him! Much love xx

I really get what you mean by finding the right trainer. I had a trainer for three years and they were AMAZINg for the first two years. ( did wonders for my position) but the third year was the year where my horse had an operation and when he was back from injury the way we trained him was VERY different from before. My relationship with him changed and we grew and moved on from that injury. My trainer didn't understand that we had changed and kept trying to train us the way they were before. It was hard to let go but now we are in a place where we have got a new trainer and are doing SO much better than that year. A trainer can really effect your mental state and they had such a negative effect. that third year they really effected my wellbeing ESPECIALLY that summer. I defo reccomemd finding the RIGHT trainer from experience or let go and move on as it can effect your riding and mental wellbeing. LOVE LOVE LOVE THE NEW INTRO!!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

So glad you showed how HARD it is to work with an untrained horse. So many videos show a professional trainer who takes a horse from zero to dead broke in 15 min. That is not reality. Every day is a challenge and just because a horse has a good day or a bad day, that doesn't mean that's how it's going to be forever. So thank you for showing the reality of frustration and how it takes years to get that wonderful confident ride.

I find it so helpful whenever I have issues training my 4 y/o loan pony (which is quite regularly!) I always ask his owner for a lesson (she's a really great instructor too) and it really helps to watch her ride and know that it's not me and it is hard sometimes but you've just got to be confident with yourself that you can improve and because they're young it's not going to be perfect. Well done he looks amazing at the end! Also happy to know I'm not the only one who says to they're horse "I know" cos no one else I know does it!

I think you did a great job handling what he gave you. I could see that you were a bit tense in your own position and lacking confidence from the start like you were saying. I have seen much worse things happen with young horses and really the only thing that those trainers did was be more fluid and not give the horse anything to argue against and kind of just exhausted the horse's idea of being naughty until the horse was able to accept cues from the rider. But these were people make a living of starting and developing young horses that are quite difficult. It so great to see that you didn't give up and are now making great progress with your first homebred!

Don’t worry, we all have these moments where just everything goes wrong. Even with older horses sometimes. When I first got my mare (10 years old), she was just like that (i didn’t break her myself) and she always wanted to go fast and it was very uncontroled. And there were these days were i was annoyed she didn’t listen and than everything just falls apart, you don’t really think about it and sometimes even get mad at your horse and than the next day i think about what happened and i’m sad, frustrated and even a bit ashamed. It’s now 6 months later and i already see so much difference, partly thanks to my trainer because i couldn’t do this all by myself (ofcours my horse is still improving but at least she can trot calm and relaxed now)

Having just started with a just 4 year old OTT colt, this video is such a reminder about the journey. I've only been riding him a few weeks but the glimpses of brilliance through the baby nonsense is so exciting. It doesn't look pretty but it's going to be a lot of fun. I just about had an anxiety attack watching that clip. He was so naughty and it looked like he was going to escalate and take it somewhere dangerous. I was totally impressed that you could at least outwardly hold it together and talk calmly to him. I thought you were brave to try to let him canter it out a bit, but obviously he wasn’t chilling out and had to be shut down. I would have shut him down and even done a one rein stop right away if I had to in that situation, but that’s because now that I’m over 40, my self preservation instincts win out over bravery. I would have been hard on myself for not being brave enough to ride it out, so your point about giving yourself a break and being kind to yourself is well taken. We all do the best we can with what we have at the time and in the situation. Seeing the progress is awesome.

the point about the right instructor is key. I have a 17hh big loose moving warmblood and my instructor just kept telling me he was being rude and hes not easy. I have recently in the last couple of months changed my instructor and OMG the difference in him is soo massive hes like a completely different horse. He is not rude or difficult I just wasn't being given the correct information on how to ride him and keep the paces and the basics. I now have the horse that I new was in there but it has been a really hard journey and there have been times that I just wanted to cry and say I just cant do this im not good enough and felt I was wasting him and letting him down. Thank god I changed to my instructor now, she has made such a massive difference and I now cant stop smiling when im riding him and he is a much happier horse for it. I would say to anyone, you know when you are just not moving forward so don't be afraid to try someone new but be prepared to have them be honest with you and to be open minded and you might just be smiling all the way to 1st place.

I love that you shared this video. I actually learned something unrelated to anything anyone else has said. For me, I like how you handled him when he picked up the canter. Instead of panicking (like I tend to do when I didn’t ask my horse to canter) you just rode it and then eventually turned him and got him to come back down. I’m sure that’s a lame observation to all you fancy riders but I will definitely remember that next time my guy decides to go on a little romp!

I can totally relate with this. I got so used to my push ride schoolmasters that once I got my own green bean I tried to use the same things I was taught on the schoolmasters, but I realized very fast that it wasn't working and it was frustrating because I was so negative on myself. Thinking I had over horsed myself. I still think all these things all the time because of how nervous and anxious my greenie can be. It is always so hard to find the good in most of our ride because I can't help it, but I blame myself for why he isn't progressing. It is so so so difficult trying to get him working where both of us are happy. So happy to see this video, it came out at the best time for me as this is exactly what I'm going through right now. Also posting my rides on social media have been a no-go because one negative comment would seriously knock me all the way to the beginning.

It is so nice to see a horse on RU-vid not behaving the way we would like, so many RU-vid influencers post relentless videos of everything going perfectly and it can make riders like myself feel a bit useless. I'm actually very glad that I was not able to take him home when I bought him (recovering still from broken pelvis), but instead he went to my wonderful trainer. I would not have dealt well with his initial activities and testing that he did with her. Altho' I've ridden now for almost 50 years, I am relearning my previous bold and pushy style to being more in tune with what my horse needs. And yes, money....well I now can put what I thought I never would into my passion....He will probably be my last hurrah for achieving what I'd always hoped for with the horse I've always dreamed up. (but no pressure! haha)...Your video and experience really helped me because I too am so very hard on myself...thinking "I should be able to do this, what's wrong with me! I'm supposed to be a really good rider!" and so on and so on.... thank you so much for being brave and confident enough to show this and share your journey....and BTW...LOVELY TROT! ~Tina in Michigan with horse in Florida lol

My channel content is not horse related... but separately I bought a young 4 year old this year, and have had my confidence massively challenged. I wish there was more content like this so I could see more than the 4 and 5 year olds that are competing at way higher levels. (We are still trying to walk and trot without issues! Getting there, but not ready for anything like a dressage test yet). Thanks for posting!

Good for you on sharing this video! I’m currently going thru this on my young home bred horse too! Same age too! 4 years must be the silly age! I really needed to see this. You are doing great!

This is awesome but I'm not an owner but "my" horse is now a school horse but was professional showjumper and now hes been out of that and in schooling etc, hes got lazy so with me coming along and needing him to perk back up, he played up last week and I panicked and got scared but by the end of the lesson I was on it and my lesson 2 days later was like a different girl riding... i was totally confident and hot on his cues and keeping him focused again and we'll be getting ready for jumping in new year. Charles goes from lazy to on speed in 2 secs and takes control in 2secs flat so have to bring him right down to walk and lots of transitions. I think you've done incredible work! X

Nice honest post, but why are horses asked a lot of when they are so young , what’s wrong with backing horses at 5 years old?

Young horses are just like children. They will push the line, bully if you let them, try to run the show. Stick to your expectations, mind your patience and you'll get there :) Well done.

Honestly, he gives me the sense he needed a jockey and a good fast canter, maybe even slow gallop. Silly boy.

Loved this! You've come so far with Moley! I felt the same way with my recent 4 year old (the babies sure have a way to have you 2nd guess everything about your riding 😅) but after working through a tough 4 yo year we got 2nd at our first complete 3 phase (the babies also have a special way of bringing the journey into perspective)! Love the positive message at the end and this new perspective that you have! Merriest of Christmas to you and the whole family!!

I love this! I can think myself into not riding for months because I’m not good enough! And I know for a fact when I back and break my 4yo in May with little to no support it’s going to be hard! But this does just remind you it’s not going to be easy, but that’s normal!

Knowing you are bad at something isn't a reason to beat yourself up. It's an opportunity to get help. The ability to know that you are doing something wrong isn't universal.

I can really relate to this. One young horse I believe he was three always seemed to resist traveling on the right lead. He literally did exactly like Joey and would turn to go to the left when least expected even on a lunge line. After spending many hours researching suppling exercises and many hours retraining him in suppling exercises traveling on the right lead from the ground and using a martingale shorter on the right rein he stopped stopped doing it. Was a lot of work. His name was Red and he was showed in western pleasure. Won quite a few ribbons in his day.

i relate to this with riding a stallion in the past that was just backed I had put his 2nd and 5th and 6th ride on him then he was about a month after that. he learned fast but had issue baby moments even though he was 7. before we had got him he was completely wild he hadn't seen another horse in along time.

I go through the exact same thing with my 8 year old every schooling session throughout the Winter. He has totally destroyed my confidence in my ability to ride. He is the horse of my dreams but I can't ride one side of him. I backed this horse myself and due to finances have not had hardly any help with him. I am actually at the point of selling him as it's not fun riding him.

Dear Olivia , watching and listening to your video . I need to write you something . My sister and i actually have the same problem with our young horse . We used to have only Hannoverian warmbloods and then bought an trakhener . He is so much more spicy and awake then my cool other horses . He slowly took over the lead from my sister and then it all went really downhill. He threw her off and she broke her hip and couldnt ride him . It took half a year to heal and the young gelding was now 4,5 years old . Since i wasnt living close to her it was not possible for me to help her and so she lunged him for the time . It was horrible cause he was really well behaved and nice when you where on the floor but he became dangerous to be on top . We still to this day are fighting to be confident enough to tell him that i / she is the boss . For anyone reading this , no this is not the first young horse we had trained and no this is not the last trakhener we are gonna get . But please if something like that got and get help . Cause asking for help is not admitting weakness !!! Now i am the only one riding him , cause i am able to cover my insecurity and be bossy to him . Your not alone with this Olivia and im very greatfull that you shared this with us. thank you

Loved seeing the before and after! Wow! Beautiful job!! Thank you for your honesty. We must remember to continue to build each other up. Seriously, how many people really have the guts to jump on a 1500lb animal with a mind of his/her own? We equestrians are bad ass :) Lovely riding!

I think you did great, saying yourself that you didnt have much experience with young horses that are lacking confidence and miles you handled it as well as anyone would. Everyone has an off day and everyone learns from the experiences they go through. Honestly not a 'bad' ride, it was a great lesson

I find it best to ride horses like that on big circles. Straight lines are for later. Going straight you tend to get on both reins and the head comes up and starts to shake as there is no give or release. On a circle you can bend and give and work the head down and get softness, circles are your friend on horses like this.

I would have felt and did exactly the same! I think it is so brave to share this and to talk about it! You’re doing awesome! Lessons really help if you’ve found the right person! My forever regret is staying to long with a trainer i didn’t feel helped me enough or gave me the right tools. I stuck with it because i didn’t know better. Luckily i’ve learned loads from it and I’m trying to switch it up now and than and ride with different trainers
