My raspberry make new plants every year and they renew plants from the roots. And after 2 years the old one dies off. I’m not sure if that how yours are. Not sure the weed fabric will allow new sprouts?

I agree. I made my berry patch 4 feet wide, and after a few years it's filled in and going beyond into the grass,

@catherineciviello2520 my double gold raspberries plant bought 3 from Starkbros back in 22, the 3 gal pot made 30 plants each in 2023, separated them out in fall of 23 had 90 plants now. Currently in ground on a 30' row I have to dig up the ones that go out of the 4' wide bed they multiply like crazy worse than wild blackberry. I just give them away to family.

I love you guys ,that said this is the only video in all you' ve done I personally find flawed. Berries are not grapes. You will be killing emerging shoots if you plant them as you did the grapes. Also $ 10.00 plant should always go in a $ 30.00 hole. In other words a hole at least half as bigger and deeper that the pot or root ball. I Know you know this so I'm not understanding your process here. Well it's an opinion and observation , Good luck and I hope I'm wrong.

My raspberries and blackberries send sooo many new shoots each year and the 2 years old die. I do not understand how it will happen under the fabric? Maybe only narrow fabric? Or planting in between to strips of fabric with possibility to open them for a new growth?

Our red raspberries fruit on new canes every year. Not sure how that will work with the weed barrier.

I think Sarah explains at 25 minutes. Cuts slit in fabric at plant base, will open & widen later to allow shoots.

also, depends on the type of raspberry. I have black raspberries that fruit on "last year's" wood and then dies. Every spring, I prune out dead canes (down to the ground) and new ones have grown the previous summer that will fruit again.

In our area in Northeast Oklahoma, birds do such a good job of spreading berry seeds that one of our properties was so thick with upright blackberries, vining blackberries (yes, not a vine but they don't stand at all), that we never had to plant. they were all along the edges of the woods or any other barrier in the ground that, presumably, stopped the seeds in one place so they could grow. We just walked around and picked several times and got buckets and buckets. Now we've bought another, larger, property and are starting over, too - but not nearly as big as you guys, though I wish I could go that big. Where our new property is, the bird-sown berries aren't so common so we'll be planting just like yours. Thank you for sharing how to do it.

You should try the Prime Ark Freedom and Ouachita thornless blackberries. The prime ark plants bear the first year and they are a variety that double crops. They are a little different than the regular thornless berries because the canes will bear for two seasons instead of bearing and then dying off. The berries are huge and much sweeter than some that are more acidic. I grow them in Kentucky and they have thrived even in this clay soil. Prime Ark berries bear fruit at the tips of the canes so never prune them until both seasons are over.

We use a long handled bulb planter for making holes for planting our raspberries. Our is from Kent&Stowe, but there are several other producers. It was so efficient, both to make the holes, and to plop the plants into the hole. Our plants came in smaller pots, though.

I planted 2 thornless blackberries bushes today. They were called Apache blackberries. I hope they do well. We noticed most of the thornless blackberries are named after Native American tribes. Wishing y’all the best with yours too. I also planted 10 blueberry bushes last year and they are all doing great. All of them have blueberries on them. I can barely wait to taste them.

Good job! Yes Stark Brothers is the Gold Standard aren't they though. I was surprised about the soaker hose, I've watched for years and thought you only used the drip tubing and tape. Stark Bro is the best. They are so good with their guarantee and go above to make up for issues though their plants are generally amazing. We have Black Raspberries, Raspberries, Strawberries, Gooseberries, Elderberries, Black Currant, Goji, and looing to get some more. Not a farm, just a jam packed urban berry garden that's trying to expanded. The Black Raspberries were planted 2 years ago, we had bad luck and only 2 survived (Stark gave us a full refund). Those 2 grew up the first year but barely and wasn't sure if they would surrvive. Last year I was able to spread them and do some easy cuttings that we now have a nice 5x8 area of packed berries (green still). I also have a ton of new shoots, next year will be nuts.

With my blackberries and raspberries I put in posts then run twine about 5ft from the ground from one end to the other so I can train them kind of like you would a grape vine. I like twine though because the raspberry thorns have something to cling on to plus it makes harvesting 110x better.

I'm not sure what the solution is raspberries and blackberries in my experience will not be contained. I've had them in the yard I've had them in a raised bed and they still read out underneath and into other areas. My son put blackberries and a raised bed by my garden, thinking that would be safe. I had blackberries 10 to 12 ft away from where he planted his and coming up in my cucumbers. I don't mean to scare you just wanting to give you a word of caution, especially since you have so many. Best of luck and I hope it works for you.

I order from Schlabach's Nursery, an Amish nursery that has been in business for generations and just happens to be about 20 miles from me. I use a drill and auger for my planting holes. Great idea putting down extra fabric around the plants for weed control, Thatks!, going to do that here. Looks like a good day for planting, wishing you a bountiful harvest.

The cane plants replace the cane after 2 years, and they spread through their roots, if you have the weed fabric they will not be able to replace the canes or expand. a better option would have been either a thick layer of mulch or to cut through in strips instead of holes i would think, like burn a 1 foot long hole spaced a foot or so apart. also the canes do not get bushy.
@mammahasspoken
@mammahasspoken 4 месяца назад
Agree with this. The other thing I would add is that raspberries are super evasive. I planted 3 canes last year (also got them from Stark Brothers) and this year I have what seems like a bizzilion of them. My plan is to transplant them in the fall to a place on the farm that can handle the over growth of them.

The problem with planting berry plants with a ground cover/weed fabric is the plants send new shoots up from their spreading roots. The fabric will prevent your plants from naturally reproducing. I use several layers of compost, mulch, and manure as my berry bed. Weeds pull up easily and regrowth is prolific. The new plants can thicken your berry patch or be transplanted to expand it elsewhere. I've even sold many of these new plants as starters. Also, when planting your berry plants, the roots should be stretched in a direction that keeps the new shoots coming up where you want them. Bunching up these elongated roots when planting will inevitably kill your plants. This means that your initial planting holes will be oval in shape rather than round.

@laurel7704

And the original raspberry plants die after bearing fruit so without the new plants sprouting up, you will not have any berries the second year. They should be grown between two wires on each side. They don’t need to be trellised or tied up, just something to lean on.

Want to add to my comment below: berries prefer acidic soil. If you have not done a soil test, rather than add manure-based compost which might be more alkaline, I would water once a week with a diluted fish fertilizer, and maybe sprinkle a tiny bit of powdered sulfur around plants about 1 foot out. For your viewers, I recommend doing a soil test prior to planting berries, and if your soil is alkaline, dig in some sulfur (no more than 1/4 cup) out about a foot from the plant. I realize you are using weed fabric to lessen your labor, but for your viewers, it would be worthwhile to kill the grass in the area you wish to plant in over the previous winter by laying down cardboard and dumping some free wood chips from your local arborist on top. Not only will that kill the grass over the winter, but it will help create the acidic soil condition berries love. I use free cardboard and free woodchips around all my berry plants to keep weeds down rather than spending big bucks on weed fabric, which eventually will deteriorate into plastic shreds and prevents you from fertilizing properly. Also, berry plants need a gallon of water a day in hot weather, so you may want to run a soaker hose on a timer.
