Of course, as I understand, Cohen never really hired him, because he knew what he was up to and who he was really working for, but even the fact that Costello tried to persuade Cohen to hire him numerous times, knowing full well about a major conflict of interest is deeply unethical. I don't really know if it's possible to disbar him for that alone, but I think at least some investigation into his dealings is in order.

That's more than enough. Having a license to practice law is a privilege, not a right. There are ethical standards and rules you agree to follow, and if you don't follow them you can be disbarred. Judge "gag order" only applies to Jury, witnesses, and court staff as well as the family members of those persons. The judge and the DA WAIVED their involvement in the gag order, allowing Trump to bad talk them all he wants. That was their way of avoiding any such "suppression of 1st amendment rights" defenses that could be cited in an overturning of the conviction later on.
