Just a couple of points to mention; firstly in hindsight adding nose weight may not have been necessary. Secondly, I was so engrossed by the photos being used as a reference that I completely forgot the option of overhead pylons and sidewinders. By the time the penny had dropped, the wing fences were already glued on. Thankfully this scheme can have both options.

Greg, I am an 87-year-old modeler, who has been building since I was about seven years old. Started with balsa models and balsa and tissue models. Let me say I only found your sight a couple of months ago. I have learned more from you than from all the other sights I visit combined. You are a wonderful modeler.

Another cracking build Greg, I'll rest easy the day I can build like you. Re 1/72 Jags, I built the Hasegawa one recently and, whilst the detail wasn't much better than the Italeri one, I think the panel lines are a bit crisper and importantly the fit is spot on. The downside is it's a difficult kit to come across these days, but perhaps Hobby 2000 will re-box it along with all their other Hasegawa re-boxings.

Very interesting build and a good result. Nice extra work and scratch building. There is no satisfying me, I recently made the 1/72 Revell Concorde for a customer and it was a real struggle. He loves these older kits but I was so fed up I told him I wanted a break. I then decided to make the Tamiya P38 and the Tamiya M18 Hellcat tank destroyer for myself to try out these modern kits with the top reviews. They are so good on fit that the parts almost suck themselves together and detail is really good so its a bit like going back to kit bashing and I missed the chance to add more of a personal touch!!

Really good job there. That engine bay insert looked to be a proper 'mare to fit. I especially liked the way you dealt with the ARTF on the recce pod, fantastic effect, and the huge amount of carving on the nose leg casting. I moved onto the Jaguar as soon as it arrived at RAF Coltishall, working in the hydraulic bay, our servicing air publications were photocopies of hand written documents for the first year. So I may have read your handwriting. I remember the odd sentence contained english words we were not sure of the meaning of. The other thing which was a problem being all the pressures etc, were metric, all our gauges imperial, on our test rigs, none of us had used metric before. luckily we quickly learned to convert until we were upgraded to metric.

I find that at this scale, if the panel lines are so bad (5 - 6 inch scale gaps!), it's better to just fill in all the panel lines and rescribe the main ones, or as many as you can be bothered with, gently into the primer. As long as you don't go heavy with the paint the effect is far better. Great scratch building as always!
@typhoon2827
@typhoon2827 11 месяцев назад
6" is approx 150mm, in 1/72 that panel gap would be in the region of 2mm. These old kits are bad but no old kit has 2mm panel lines. But I agree that sometimes it's best to fill, sand and rescribe particularly if they're a bit 'soft' too.

Nice model, No criticism of your model skills but, having spent seven years on Jags, two of which were looking after the drop tanks, plus driving past one in a museum daily. I think the front of the drop tank shape is wrong, its to pointed, Early drop tanks had the fins integral, which meant they had to be removed every time the aircraft needed to be jacked up. The tanks were modified with bolt on fins, meaning the inner fin could be removed to allow the jack to be put in position without removing the tank.

Q) what do you think of the 1/72 Hasegawa kit incidentally?
@GregsModels
@GregsModels 5 месяцев назад
I built the Hasegawa kit back in the mid eighties, still have the great box artwork. I remember it being a good kit. The Italeri one looks slightly better, at first glance. But it's a very poor fit and has accuracy issues. Then there are the Airfix, Matchbox and Frog ones 😬, I've never built any of them, a lucky escape. I'd go for the Hasegawa kit first then the Italeri one next. But what I'm trying to say is that we are long overdue for a new tooling. Come on Airfix!!

Greg, hate to bug you with a quesion, but I just built a couple of kits, a Minn craft, Lockheed Supper connie, and a Classic Estes Patriot rocket kit. This question is about decal quality, I noticed on both water slide decals they seemed to fall apart in my hands, I followed the directions but they disintergrated quickly. Odd? I never had that issue back in the day, Made in chiner you reckon?
@GregsModels
@GregsModels 2 года назад
If these are old decals this would explain the disintegration. Most decals have a limited life and go yellow and brittle over time. New or recent ones, it's just poor decals I'm afraid. One solution may be Microscale's liquid decal film, supposed to restore old or decals, never used it myself.

RAF serviceman from Coltishall 1977+ here. The camo on the wrap-around grey / green was a soft edge, but only right up close. The grey had an odd purple-y reflective 'granite' effect to it, as if it had very small glass granules in it. This camo wore off easily at the very front of intakes, nose of the recce pod, the laser marker windows, etc. revealing a yellow-green undercoat, which was then protected with a black, rubbery 'mastic' to prevent more aerodynamic wear. These black areas are often seen on photos of this time. Inside the usually-open panels was an oily-shiny light grey like the undercarriage legs, sometimes with dirt or 'soot' on it, and the edges of often-opened panels almost always had greasy hand and finger marks. The recce pods usually had thin red and white stripes on the lower rotating part, and small black stencils with instructions about rotation, etc. on the ground for loading and removing camera film magazines. These pods were brand new at that time, and were dull camo grey and green all over. There are other details, such as the 'red-phosphor bronze' effect gun muzzle surrounds, the small triangular steel blade-like antenna under the nose behind the nose gear door, and the one, later two, blade aerials behind the cockpit. These and the RWR aerial on the tail also gained protective black mastic. This all applies to the time when markings were at their minimal visibility level, during the 'low contrast' era for markings, something that was extended to the airfield, with kerbstones being dull green and even window frames being 'toned down'. 41 Squadron's flying 'can-opener' and 'cross of Lorraine with bars' were painted in dull roundel red, only gaining a yellow crown and central white line some years later. At this time, the nosewheel door and the fin had a single identifying letter, black with a thin white surround.

Would you say an airbrush is necessary for these kits. I have an airbrush but need a compressor and I’d basically be learning hot to use it on this. Otherwise I’d be doing hand painting which I’m sure won’t look as good but perhaps doable? Anyone got any tips
