Hello Stella! (Stella is a greek name). Well, i would like to practice about the exceptions of the masculine and feminine nouns, for example: il problema. Thank you!
Ciao Stella , I am new to your channel. Don't know if you have done articles ..if not . I would love to see that .. plus I have just watched your reflexive verbs vid. But not how to conjugate them ! That please.
You are a very good teacher and your English is excellent. I plan on watching more of your videos and I will let you know if you make any mistakes with your English. I doubt you will make any mistakes. 😊
Dear teacher Valentina, the way you teach Italian is wonderful and things look easy. Thank you so much. I have a request to you. Kindly make a video about preposition like at the, to the, in the, on the, and so on. Thank you. Sincerely, Peter from Pakistan
Dearest Valentina, very appreciable. Very expressive. I would like to request, how to write a formal mail, announcement and formal letter. Thank you sadhna kowlessur
Hi Valentina I’m enjoying your classes very much. They are very clear and helpful. Could you please link me to the more in depth video you refer to in this video about possessive adjectives when you don’t need the article when using with family members. Thanks
Thank You. I like to learn your lessons from you. These are great for me to learn Italian. These lessons really help me. I am learning Italian. Thank you. Keep showing me more because I love to learn Italian.
I'm glad to hear that, Noelle! Please go to my "videos" page, where you can find ALL the videos I have uploaded so far: www.youtube.com/@ItalianTeacherValentina/videos Also, don't forget to subscribe and enable notifications so you won't miss any of the new ones! 😉
Thank you very much dear madam Valentina Stella for your nice and soft medote it's very perfect class for learning Itailan language. Some where as I read in news paper or any book such us below words Il, la, io what kind of words
Grazie! Those are articles. I have a whole class on it, you can find the recording on my website: www.valentinastellatutor.com/register/live-class-with-valentina-stella-12march22/
This was so helpful! Knowing what nouns are considered masculine or feminine is probably the hardest for English speakers who've never had to make that differentiation. Once we master that, your lesson makes it very easy to know how to use possessive adjectives in Iltalian. Grazie!!!
Once again you manage to solve the apparent mystery of Italian possessive adjectives like no other teacher or book has ever done for me in the past. You truly do simplify grammar rules to the point where a learner can appreciate that they are not either as intricate or complicated as they may seem at first 😊
Than your request is worth double, JD!! 😄😄 Joking aside, I have not intention to stop making videos, but please notice that I've plenty already published (you can find all them here: www.youtube.com/@ItalianTeacherValentina/videos) and please consider subscribing so you won't miss the new ones coming 😉
@@ItalianTeacherValentina I'm a subscriber! Going to Calabria this fall. I hoped to practice my Italian there, but people have told me if I don't understand, ask them to speak in Italian. Evidently I'll be learning some Calabrese!
@@j.d.kaiser7587 😄😄 Yes, I talked about that in one of my videos about dialects in Italy! In most cases it could just be more of an accent issue rather than actually different words. Especially with younger people and in public places, nowadays most people speak standard Italian (but the Calabrese accent is still very strong)
Hi Valentina I know, this video you made dates back years ago. But i just started learning italian and i find it such informative and well structured. So i am wondering if you could answer to my question: In your example with our books, we got according to your brilliant explanation the result, i nostri libri. But how to pick the right plurial article,,knowing that you also have the artcle gli for plural? Thanks Valentina in advance for your response Andy
Ottima domanda, Andy! The article depends on 3 things: gender, number and what letter the next word begins with. Since when using possessive adjectives, the next word IS the possessive adjective which always starts with a consonant, we will never use "gli" since that's only for vowels and special consonant groups. Hence "i nostri libri". If you want to dive deeper into articles, I have a dedicated 1-hour class available on my website for purchase, where I cover all the rules and cases with tons of examples, here's the link: www.valentinastellatutor.com/register/live-class-with-valentina-stella-12march22/
Valentina you make learning italian so much clearer for me. I have spent months not knowing how to correctly write a sentence with possessive adjectives in. Thank you so much. I love your videos. ❤❤
I have a question, can you explain why an article is needed in Italian when in English it is not. For example in "la mia casa". But in English you would just have "my house" without the article. It would really be helpful to get a clear explanation on this. "Grazie mille".
As I was saying in my reply to your other comment, the general rule is that we do use the article all the time, even with possessive adjectives. So we just say "the my house" literally. It's just a difference between the two languages. There are some exceptions, one of which has to specifically do with possessive adjectives and I talk about it (with examples) here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-s1M7IQRcP3s.html Hope this helps!
I’ll admit I also initially thought it was supposed to match up with the gender of the speaker, it helped me to just think, is the relavent gender included in the text? And not to overthink it.
The gender we always refer to is the gender of the noun, this usually helps my students grasp this concept. Please watch this other video of mine if you want to learn more: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uerysI6Ivi4.html
Ciao Juliana! Not on RU-vid yet. I do have several lessons on articles on my Italian 101 course, and a dedicated 1-hour class on definite articles on my website, here are the links if you want to check them out: www.valentinastellatutor.com/how-to-enroll-in-the-italian-course-101/ www.valentinastellatutor.com/register/live-class-with-valentina-stella-12march22/
The same way if you were a woman: "la mia casa". As I explain in the video, the possessive adjective you pick does NOT depend on the gender of the owner, but on the gender of the thing you own, in this instance feminine singular since it's "casa"

This was a good one! I know that I need a video about how to pick the right article to form the sentence, but I definitely understand how to form the sentence based on the gender of the noun! :) but..... the shoes phrase is confusing!
So I just watched the video again, and I’m also confused on what article you used to create “ mio gatto” so if I put an article in front of mio, what I’m I literally saying? 🤔
Molto bene, Samantha! Don't worry about the shoes sentence, it takes a bit to sink since it's so different from English. As for the article, what we literally say is "the my cat". I know it sounds weird in English, but that's what we are literally saying! :D
Great video on possessive adjectives, Stella. You make Italian language look very easy to learn but... Now I need clarity here please, why "mamma mia, and not "mia mamma"? Two why at times see "la casa mia" instead of "la mia casa"? Now, "tocca a te". Mille grazie.
Ahah! Ok, è il mio turno! :D 1) "Mia mamma" is used when you want to say "my mother". "Mamma mia" is an expression, similar to "Oh my God". 2) Usually, when we put the possessive adjective after the noun, is to give it more emphasis, to make a point, like for example when you are quarreling with someone and you want to really make a point that it is YOUR house, not theirs. Hope this helps!
I'm glad it did! Adjectives are one of the hardest points of Italian grammar, and possessive adjectives even more so since they work so differently than in English. Let me know if you'd like more videos on this topic!
@@ItalianTeacherValentina I do have a question though. If we were to say “questo è il nostro cane”. And if you wanted to clarify if it’s female, would you be able to say “la nostra cane”?
@@Bramz26. Una buona domanda! You could say "la nostra cagna", as "cagna" is techically the noun for "female dog". But "cagna" is not very much used as it can also be an offensive or bad word (when used for humans". So we usually say "il cane" for both female and male dogs, and then we specify "è una femmina" (it's a female) or "è un maschio" (it's a male) if needed.
Salve Valentina, I have just started to learn Italian and I love your videos! I am also listening to an audio book, were I just finished the possessive adjective session. When practicing, one combination got me a bit confused, and I hope you can help me. I was asked to translate "my car" using the word "auto" in Italian. Thinking "auto" was a masculine noun, I translated the sentence to "l' mio auto" but I see that my use of the article l' is wrong in this sentence. When given the answer it was "la mia auto". And if I am guessing, the article changed to la, because we can't use l'. But is it correct that the possesive adjective changes to feminine as well? Are there specific rules for possesive adjective when the noun start with a vowel? (My first language is Norwegian, so I apologise for any misspelling or other errors).
Ciao Elisabeth! Yours is a great question. First of all, the exercise was a tricky one, since auto, despite ending in "o" is a feminine noun. Why? Because is the abbreviation of "automobile", which is the complete word for car, and is feminine. So the article needed to be feminine because the noun is feminine. As for the article l', it can be used with both masculine and feminine nouns, but they need to start with a vowel. So if you just needed to say "the car", "l'automobile" would be correct. But since you are adding "my" and so the word next to the article begins with a consonant ("mia") you need to swich to "la". Hope this helps! If you need further help with articles (they can be confusing!), I've recorded a 1-hour class on them, with plenty of explanations and examples. You can purchase it on my website, here's the link: www.valentinastellatutor.com/register/live-class-with-valentina-stella-12march22/
@@ItalianTeacherValentina Grazie mille! It makes so much sense. Your explanation is very good. I will definitely check out your session on articals. Thank you 😊
How to form italian sentences. Is there any pattern or rules to follow. My mistake always is on correct placement of words in a sentence. In Your tutorial video on possessives I knew now but how about this sentence, Ho un' impress Internet. Why impress goes before internet. When in English sentence construction it is I have Internet business. The internet goes before business. I thought the same placement is accepted in italian. If to follow the English into italian, it is Ho un' internet impresa but not accepted. My difficulty in any Italian sentence formation which is confusing to me.
I would love to know more about using possesive adjectives for family members. I am really enjoying your lessons and learning more from you then the zoom class I am paying for. Do you do individual lessons?
I'm glad you are finding them helpful, Dawn! Here's the video for possessive adjectives and family members: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-s1M7IQRcP3s.html As for lessons, I do teach online tutoring classes (individual and groups) but I'm currently fully booked.
Articles need a dedicated lesson (and it's a long one too!). I have an online class on articles, you can find it here: www.valentinastellatutor.com/register/live-class-with-valentina-stella-12march22/
