I am learning Italian, and I must point out that, Italian is actually a semi-phonetic language, not a 100% phonetic language, just like Spanish / Gallo / Portuguese / Aranese / Latin / Galician etc and Norwegian / Icelandic / Old Norse / Faroese / Gothic / Swedish etc, in fact, certain Italian letters can be pronounced completely different in different Italian words, as in all other pretty languages, for example, the CH in anche is pronounced like a K sound (anke) and in chiuso it is pronounced like the CH in English, and Z is pronounced like DZ in certain Italian words like zio etc and like a TS in other Italian words like anzi / pizza etc, just to point out a few, so there are exceptions and different pronunciations, depending on the words, just like in English and any other pretty language, there are always plenty of exceptions and things like that, and the right way to learn a language is by learning each word with its pronunciation and spelling, treating each word as an individual, as opposed to learning from books only or only learning the general rules, as the pronunciation of each word depends on the word in all well-constructed languages, and every true linguist / dude that created each pretty language knew that certain letters or diphthongs that may sound good in certain words may not sound right in other words, as the letters and letter combinations that come before and after each letter / diphthong influence the overall sound and flow of the entire word, so the pronunciation is always decided based on the word in each properly-constructed language, including Italian, which also has plenty of exceptions, but ppl that learned Italian first probably didn’t even notice the differences because they are used to them and never think about them, but to a new learner, the differences are always obvious tho, plus a truly phonetic language would look exactly the same as it is pronounced in all words, and even the diphthongs would be pronounced the same as they are written, and the alphabet would be pronounced without extra sounds after each letter, so in truly phonetic languages, one would say B without the I / Y sound after the B sound, so, one wouldn’t say BI / BEE or BEH or BUH etc, which are pretty much modern ways of pronouncing the letters that are influenced by Germanic languages and Germanic alphabets, plus truly phonetic languages wouldn’t have groups of vowels or groups of consonants, they are usually those languages that have one consonant + one vowel + one consonant etc format, so they look quite non-professional and poorly-constructed, and Italian is certainly not like that, as it has many consonant clusters and double Ts etc and multiple vowels without consonants between them, so it’s not a phonetic language technically, it definitely looks different in spelling, as not every single consonant is pronounced, and one can definitely notice the influence of German / Dutch / English and other Germanic languages on Italian spelling, in fact, Italian spelling reminds a lot of German spelling, and it’s like a mix of German + Spanish spelling! In fact, no pretty language is 100% phonetic, but even most non-pretty languages aren’t 100% phonetic, to be honest, at least from what I noticed so far, and, most ppl don’t really know what a truly phonetic language would look like, as there is this idea that if there aren’t many differences, compared to English, that the language must be phonetic, however, it’s usually not the case, but languages such as Japanese and Chechua and other similar languages would be an example of what could be considered a truly phonetic language, as each letter is pronounced and the spelling looks literally the same as the pronunciation, if one doesn’t count the characters in Japanese and only considers the actual spelling with Latin letters, like when Japanese words are written with Latin letters, one can see that it’s truly phonetic, it looks the same as it sounds! However, the more different the pronunciation is from the spelling, the prettier and the more professional the words look, which is one of the reasons why English and Dutch and Welsh and Danish and the other 5 Celtic languages etc are one of the prettiest languages ever, with very smartly constructed words with super professional aspect that’s easy to read, and right pronunciation that fits each word, tho Old Norse and Norwegian are as pretty as English and Dutch as the words themselves are extremely pretty and because Modern English and Modern Dutch etc also come from those ancient languages like Old Norse / Old English / Proto Germanic etc, anyway, and most Norwegian words are almost the same as the Danish words, so most of the base words are usually quite similar, but, in general, the most languages that are still a pretty language, but that aren’t as non-phonetic as English, aren’t as pretty, and their spelling doesn’t look as professional / moderne as English spelling, but I am learning all the pretty languages that I can find, anyway! Most English words are in fact pronounced according to the rules, so if a language that’s mostly words that are pronounced according to the rules, then English would be a phonetic language too, but it just isn’t! In truth, the overall aspect of all the words and how similar the spelling is to the pronunciation, including all double and triple consonants etc, is what really make a language non-phonetic, or semi-phonetic, or 100% phonetic or 80% phonetic etc - and it’s technically impossible for most languages to be 100% phonetic because most languages do not have the same format as Japanese / Chechua etc, that’s basically vavava or avavav, so one vowel + one consonant / one consonant + one vowel, without two or three or four consonants in a row etc!

I must also add that, non-phonetic languages are a lot easier to read than phonetic languages, and also easier to read than semi-phonetic languages - for example, I am intermediate level in German, and I can read German words fast when they are spelled the German way, where the spelling fits each word and the pronunciation rules etc, and each word that I learned, I can immediately recognize it and pronounce it fast when I see it spelled in German, such as the word schreiben, just to give an example, which means to write, however, when I saw the same word, but spelled phonetically, as it is spelled in Yiddish (shraybn) I had to think for a few moments as I couldn’t process it as fast as the original word schreiben with the original German spelling, and I couldn’t tell it was the same word at first, so I had to think a bit about it, it’s definitely way easier to recognize and read words fast when they aren’t spelled phonetically, same as in English, I can read English words super fast when spelled the English way, I don’t even have to think about the fact that the spelling looks different, so, if I see the word ‘water’ etc, for example, I automatically pronounce it the way it is pronounced, and when I hear the word water, I automatically spell it water, I don’t even think about the differences in spelling, however, when I see words such as water or other English words spelled phonetically in languages that are based on English, but that spell the words exactly the same as they are pronounced, I have difficulty reading them, I have to think about them to realize they are the same words, but spelled phonetically, phonetic languages are very hard to read and process, especially when most words are based on words that come from non-phonetic languages, but even in general, and, I must say, I am native speaker level in Spanish, which is less non-phonetic than English, and I cannot read Spanish words as fast as I can read English words, the overall aspect of less non-phonetic languages is harder to process fast, even when one is native speaker level in that language and knows the actual words and has an automatic mode in the language, and, English and Dutch are definitely the easiest to read / process / spell, of all languages I know and / or am learning, and also, of all the languages I’ve ever seen, their format is just so easy to read and relaxing to the eye, and most words do not have accents or umlauts etc, which makes them super easy to use / spell / read etc, and Old Norse is also extremely easy to read, for some reason, despite the different letters and accents, and Norwegian / Danish also, I guess some languages are just constructed differently, in such a way that makes them very relaxing to the eye and easy to process / read, with really great letter combinations, aka combinations of letters that go great 2gether, creating that perfect harmony and flow, and a very relaxed aspect of the word etc!
