ITALIAN ELEGANCE. STREET STYLE IN MILAN. How to look classy and timeless at an ADVANCED AGE? 

I'm just a little older Sally. I think being our age is just great. I remember when I was a teenager reading my sisters Vogue magazines in the early 60's. Now back then Vogue were about style more than fashion. They showed me beautifully made garments and shoes that were not seen around everywhere. When I look back on my life as a teenager, and the way I was attracted to good style, I now know and believe that one is born with certain traits, that turns one on to things that others do not appreciate. I often looked out of place and even over dressed, but I was proud of myself and appreciated that I am not a follower and i do not need other to follow me. Fashion comes and goes but good style stays around for a long time.

Yes! And even the dogs look fashionable. 🤗

@@76482, I wish we Americans can be dressed up as the Italians do. Of course, New Yorkers & San Franciscans dressed up nicely too.

Yes, on several holidays in Italy, i also saw that even the normal not rich women still look stylish. The Italians like stylish items. Once when i was standing with my Alfa Romeo GTV6 from 1985 was standing at a traffic light, i got a nice compliment about my car: " Bella macchina!" ( Nice car!).

some of still do I'm in the upper east side of Manhattan..I still wear bowties and classic clothes....I have many things from my father like silk ties from the 1940's...

@@StarzzyJJASD have to disagree there and I'm British. The British will wear a 'label' and think it's style - it ain't! It's not what you wear but how you wear it. The French, Spanish and above all The Italians know this.

@csora2547 I’m also of “a particular age”. I’ve found not showing “all our blessings” as the young women today do, is the most flattering to us. Therefore, I wear anything I am drawn to. I find the modesty of any woman, when it comes to clothes, is key. That’s not to say dressing like a nun or Hasidic. Low cleavage, super tight fit etc. are cheap. Kardashian-like dress is not fashion nor becoming. Stylish women have always known to leaving something to the imagination is far more alluring than letting it all hang out.

My mom was a model in Italy...florence...a beautiful woman inside and out...she told me when I was a young man.....a man can never be over dressed....or too rich.

Generally speaking elegance is something you get only with the maturity. But it's indeed that italians, at least the ones who can afford, pay more attention to their look compared to other, even richer, people. And this not only in Milan. Personally I've lived in UK. Not far from London, in a wealthy area close to Oxford. I was very disappointed about the way of people dress there. Apart from central London, super-rich, cosmopolitan and educated, where you have Savile Row, Bond street, Mayfair and so on, the rest of people are so... swallow. It's barbaric to see people going around in tracksuit and sliders. They look all tramps!

@Paper Darts...He can probably afford it and his stylist knows what will make him look better. I also have beaver taste, but I can't afford such clothes from expensive shops in Manhattan. Currently, the average person cannot buy tasteful and inexpensive clothes because there are no such stores. These clothes that we could buy for several years and could afford them only go to the rich. We have to dress in polyester junk and we often overpay for it. Only such people can afford style and quality. Have a nice day.

Many of the women with those dreadful Hermes bags which pinpoint a “follower” who is defined by what she wears are not stylish. They also had scowls on their faces. Color, material, cut, and fit, are the essentials of style. Living in clothes as opposed to them hanging on a mannequin. Liking all the elements, having no fear of color and being completely comfortable in your choices… voila! ….. you’ve arrived in style

I have worked in fashion retail for several years. Recently it has been a race of flashy vulgarity to accomplish the (un)taste of new riches from middle-east. Some legendary brands like Valentino, Gucci, Dior, Balenciaga, Louis Vuitton, Burberry, even Ferragamo and more are interesting only in making extra-profits. They produce so many overpriced tacky stuff with logo everywhere, flashy colours, huge animals printed all over, big shoes. HORRIBLE. It's not trendy or fashion. Trendy can be a shorter lenght or tapered trouser or with a coulisse etc. Not such bad taste. And with the same amount of money you can go to some atelier in Italy or France getting a bespoke blazer or suit or chemise, 100% made by hands in the top fabrics.

@@tommasovasta8323 Thank you for your input. You are so correct in what you say about fashion. Fashion is about appealing to the followers who have no regard for sophistication. It is sad that most people have to follow fashion because they can't think for themselves. Far too many fashion followers think that those brands you are referring to, will make them look good, just because they are popular noted fashion brands. Sadly they never consider what they can offer to make the garment look good. They just put it on with the name blatently displayed and venture out to advertise, like a cheap sandwich board hawker. Yes..... Some of the latest fashions in clothes have very little regard for the artistic basic rules, of balance, harmony, order and colour coordination.
