I just lost my Italian greyhound 3 weeks ago and I have never been so in love in my life. 16 years of the deepest love I ever felt. About potty training though, I spent a year trying to potty train mine as a puppy and just no luck. I was getting so frustrated and just didn’t know what to do. I took her one weekend to stay with my parents when I went out of town and came back and she was all potty trained. All it took was spending three days with my parents potty trained dogs using the doggie door and it clicked with her and till the day she died she never had a single accident again. So if you have one and you can’t potty train it try taking it around other dogs who are potty trained so they can watch and learn.

My Italian Greyhound lived 18 years- he was always flying off the couch, bed, the deck in the backyard, and would even jump really high to get on surfaces. He never broke a leg; amazing really. Maybe because he was sprinting since the beginning and he developed enough muscle to withstand the landings? Max was trained well, but he still had accidents in the house. No matter how well you train them I think this is inevitable. He hated the rain and cold, but I bought custom coats for him for every weather situation, rain coat/heavy winter coat/lighter fall coat, and then would just push him outside and say "you're a dog this is the way," haha!

Thank you for the video. I love this breed. I have 3 and they are sweet, affectionate, independent minded, and funny. I live in a cold climate and it is true about the shoveling. My husband makes fun little paths for them in the backyard. With 2 coats and long booties each we are able to go out most of the year. I'd also add that if you don't want a couch buddy or a dog who sleeps in bed, don't get an IG. All my 3 are trained to go outside and are great about it. They will stare at me asking. As puppies, I took them out all the time and even if they had an accident I'd bring them outside to finish on the grass and praised them. I also don't crate or leave them alone for more than 4h. I also noticed that my family friends with whippets need them in a leash always due to high prey drive. All my 3 iggies do well on off leash trails (never near a road of course). Their need to stay near the pack and our family is fascinating. But remember each IG is a little different based on their own personality as well as how you raised them.
@DiamondDogTraining
@DiamondDogTraining Год назад
Hi Betta, Thank you for your comment. Yes, they are all lovers and love to cuddle in bed. Yes, I have shoveled many little paths in the snow . Has to be all the way to the grass for some of the IG's. Many of my IG's went outside in all weather. But a few really preferred to use the potty pads in inclement weather. I find it more convenient to have the potty pads available for use in the bad weather and also late at night with the coyotes and other animals at night. Even though my yard is fenced, I always take my dogs outside on a leash after dark. Yes, they are so different. Nicky stays right near me all the time, but Beezie is a hunter and a bunny or chipmunk and she would be go after it in a flash. I would like to say she would come back quickly because of all the rewards she gets for coming, treats, play, toys etc. But I will not take a chance. My girls are always on leash unless in a fenced area. Yesterday she found a mole in the yard and chased it until it escaped under the fence. I don't know for certain she would have come if she could have continued to chase the mole. Thank you, Joyce

Truly an informative video! I currently have a very sweet loveable Whippet who has just turned one (the second Whippet I’ve owned), but in the future I’ve considered downsizing to a more manageable sized Iggy. Every Iggy I’ve met has been gloriously joyful, affectionate, and cuddly... it’s great to know that going from a Whippet to an Iggy means there’ll be many more hugs and laughs to come! Also, as someone who’s brushed my Whippet’s teeth religiously since day one, I really appreciate you warning people about setting up a structured brushing routine. I agree it’s absolutely imperative to do this to avoid not just costly dental bills, but also most importantly to preserve the well-being of your furry loved one.

@@DiamondDogTraining Thank you so much, Joyce! I’d love if you could answer the following questions. I’ve heard from other Iggy owners about the toilet training issues you mentioned-totally fine as we’ve successfully worked through this issue with our dear Whippets. However, I have also heard that some male Iggies can pee on themselves (e.g. on their chest/stomach), so I was wondering how common this issue is in the breed. Also, I know each pup is different, and personality is very much dependent on how they are raised in the owner’s home/socialised, but I was wondering what difference in personality traits there are in getting a female vs. a male Iggy. So far we’ve had two adoringly loveable female Whippets who also love sharing the bed at night... lol so it was very reassuring to know that your beautiful Iggies are also obsessed with bed cuddles. Thanks again!

@@DiamondDogTraining Hello. I am trying to decide between an Italian Greyhound and a Whippet. Therefore, I try to analyze as much information as possible to make this difficult decision on an informed basis. Previously, I had a Riesenschnauzer (the Giant Schnauzer) and a Xoloitzcuintli (miniature).
@DiamondDogTraining
@DiamondDogTraining 2 года назад
Hi Alex, the two breeds you had previously were very different from a whippet and Italian Greyhound. No do sure about the personality of the xolo. Do you have any more questions or comments I can answer for you. I had a full size greyhound and then chose to have the smaller IG with the same Greyhound personality. The Whippet I find to be a tougher dog because of the terrier. But the whippet is also nice and more substantial, just my personal opinion based on the Whippets I have known.

My baby boy is an (unconfirmed but if you see him you can tell by body) italian greyhound mix (we think mixed with Chihuahua based on his appearance). The potty training is so true, he did pad train but never got house broken. I have a silicone pad the put his on so it isnt right on the floor. Fortunately his face is less narrow due to being a mixed breed so less risk of dental issues. He is the sweetest little guy though. Super cuddly. Sticks to me like absolute glue.

@@DiamondDogTraining Yes! We adopted one 2 weeks ago. He is 2.5 years old. We knew his owner. She passed away and the caretaker wanted to find a home that could care for him. We've owned several dogs, but "Reilly the Iggy" is so different! He loves our other dog, but she is older and not willing to play with him much. In his previous home, he was never walked because the owner was too weak. She let him pee & poop on her apartment balcony. She discouraged visitors to play with him because she couldn't. He is adjusting well to living in a big home with a yard and getting plenty of walks and love. Of course, potty training is a BIG challenge. I think he is getting more comfortable with going outside, but still at times goes on the potty pads we have. He is super skittish, but a HUGE cuddle bug when we are in the bed. I just LOVE him. If we could just get through the potty training part! I will take him outside as much as humanly possible. I think that will help a great deal.

Yes, a wonderful breed. The best. Sounds like your puppy does not consider the room he pees in to be part of the house to keep clean. Go to that room with him on A leash and sit and work on a computer or play games with him and watch tv. Make sure you take him outside before you go in the room and immediately outside after you have been in the room. You can also move his food bowl and feed him in that room . Hope this helps. I have never had a Jack Russel even play with an IG. You will need to teach the Jack Russel to be very gentle playing and be careful the Jack Russel does not think of the IG as prey when it runs. I really enjoyed your video, I am just starting my research. Looking for a companion now that I work from home. I have an elderly cat who would be the only other pet in the home. What are your thoughts on how a 1-2 year old dog would react with a cat in the environment? Traditionally are they good with cats? The cat is our little old lady and has been around dogs in the past before our yorkie passed away. Great content and keep up the amazing work!
@DiamondDogTraining
@DiamondDogTraining 2 года назад
Hello, Italian Greyhounds can be great companions with a cat. a puppy will have so much energy that you will need to help your elderly cat and redirect the puppy when the elderly cat is overwhelmed. If you are wondering, a 1-2 yesr old Italian Greyhound is still a puppy. At that age the puppy will still be bouncing off the furniture and possibly the walls. If your cat was younger, then the cat and Italian Greyhound would be able to play more together. Perhaps your elderly cat is still really active which would allow the 2 to play together more. A cat and an Italian Greyhound may curl up together and wash each others ears when they have accepted each other. But it takes time to help them adjust. An Italian Greyhound will want to chase the cat if it runs. hope this helps. Joyce

I just rescued an 8 month old….. I was told it was a chihuahua….I could see her ribs. I thought she was just emaciated. Got her home and discovered she was Italian greyhound mix. Not the breed I ever would have chosen, but so far it’s been great. Very easy to train, cuddly. Only problem is she chews up everything. Even canvas Kong toys.
@DiamondDogTraining

Hi, chewing could have many reasons. She could be unsure in her new home. Stuffed Kongs are always the best for helping a dog relax. Maybe she is still teething at 8 months. Chew toys like bully sticks with holder, himalayan chew, benebone. All of those are good. some of my videos may help you. Let me know if you have more questions. IG's are the best cuddlers, must be kept warm, not the easiest to housetrain. Depends on the mix as to coat and tolerance of the cold. Thank you, Joyce

My IG went in for a dental appointment and he was not the same for 6 months. Clearly there was an issue with anesthesia or oxygen to the brain. He spent a lot of time staring off blankly, then would snap out of it. Eventually he became himself again. Also, he had seizures until I read that dogs cannot have any food (often soft treats) that contain Polypropylene Glycol. As soon as I changed his treats, he never had another seizure and lived 12 more years.

Great question. Before teething starts. Help your puppy to get comfortable with your finger in their mouth with toothpaste and also the soft tooth brush with tooth paste. Joyce, I have a question. Our Twigs is impossible to walk. He is afraid of sudden noises, like leaves skittering along the ground. We had a chain link fence built in the backyard so he could exercise, but he’ll only fetch a ball a few times. I would like him to keep his muscles up, but he strains anxiously, even with the proper collar on. I’m afraid he’ll harm his windpipe. I’ve tried to get a harness for him, but haven’t been able to find one to fit his body shape. Would you happen to know where I could find an Iggie harness, or if such a thing actually exists? PS. I hope you had good luck with your dog’s teeth. Since Twigs had some of his teeth out he can’t eat rawhide bones. His mouth bleeds, as his gums get crushed in spots.

There is not the slightest drawback to have an Italian greyhound. A vet will confirm. It is not a chore to take care of a pet you loooove . 😊 here, the dog has tears in his eyes while hearing what you have said … before your conclusion.

I love everything about an Italian Greyhound. My dogs are the love of my life. But, I believe I owe it to the breed to inform a person before they get an IG. So later they cannot say they did not know about the difficulties like potty training and teeth etc. The person should be well informed so they can make an informed decision. When they get an Italian Greyhound, I want that person to know everything about the breed and still makes the decision to get an IG . Then we know that IG will have a home forever and not end up in rescue . Thank you for your comment. Joyce

I had been looking for months on petfinder all the animal shelters and organizations within a 50 mile radius and had not seen any dogs that made MY ears perk up. I thought this was simply my heart still grieving over the loss of my 14yr old retriever mix rescue (funny we always said who rescued who)Molly Moshbausch Miss Mosh my girl my heart my best friend my angel. One day I had to quickly retrieve an email opened my email in box and hmm Petfinder has several pets for me to check out okay ill just scan here quickly aww so sweet so many wait stop go back this little face with big brown eyes staring up at the camera as if to say Whyyy whyy am I here what did i do to make you not love me enough to never ever send me away from you? I burst into tears to my shock. I filled out the forms not even seeing the distance at this point there was no doubt in my mind. The shelter in Van Nuys called me back immediately and told me her story...owner surrender pregnant wife and husband stated although she had never bitten anyone they could not be sure once their baby arrived and she would tear things up when left alone not potty trained and not spayed only 6 months old..sight unseen and you pay for her and pick her up here is our address...5 hours of driving up, we are so excited she is sweet and gentle and loving and obedient she is also emaciated has a scar from her chest to her shoulder to her neck our vet said she was 4 lbs underweight she weighed only 13lbs her ribs you could count her spine and hips visible her legs were only skin and bone her stomach was concave and she flinched as if she had been beaten. When we got home she was afraid to enter the house she would not jump up on the furniture and in our house my motto is if my animals my pets or my babies cannot enjoy the furniture then it has no place in my house it is useless then out it goes. So we lifted her up to sit with us she was uneasy so we thought maybe enjoy a beautiful calm relaxing walk we have a nice neighborhood and a nature trail around the block as well..as we put on her leash she did not know what we were doing she was so fearful we reassured her and both my daughter and i took the time she needed to calm herself with our soft words and sitting next to her and reassuring her she began to relax but still it was quite clear that walking on a leash had only lead to being taken to the shelter then the vet then a long car ride then into this new owner strangers house now where are we going oh my goodness...we were so overwhelmed by her willingness to trust here she was ribs and hip bones tiny thin face a twig branch for a tail but it was wagging so fast she would jump 3 ft in the air at us every time she looked up at us she would jump and be so excited we picked her up she hugged us she hugged me and here we are in the middle of our walk stopped on the sidewalk hugging KoniKa and my daughter and i hugging and crying crying at the forgiveness to trust another human being after being so abused so abandoned so betrayed..i mean is there anything more evil than intentional harm to the helpless defenseless?! There is a special place in hell my great grandmother used to say a special level tailored perfectly fitting so that on that day without a doubt they will fully reap all that they have sown. I love my little Italian Greyhound mix wish i knew what she was mixed with but she looks alot like the Simpsons dog Santas little Helper and recently she has gotten dark stripe down her spibe

Yes, there is a gene that Italian Greyhound breeders check for before breeding a dog. some IG's have very soft enamel which causes many problems. also the IG bred down from the Greyhound frequently has dental problems. Are your dogs Italian Greyhounds? Thank you, Joyce

Oh my gosh! My daughter just got a male IG and he is the sweetest thing! When he sleeps he wants behind you should and he snuggled up into the crook of your neck and his nose usually just below the ear. So very sweet! But whenever I walk anywhere in the house, or even sit on the potty for a second, he is always jumping up and running beside me. It gets so annoying. I have gotten him to sit, a command he know, when I set on the toilet and I tell him to sit and he does so I scratch his head and give him praise, but the second I quit petting him and quickly reach for toilet paper, he’s jumping up on my knees again. I also have a 3 and 5 yr old grandsons, and while the other dog in the house is a. 2 yr old GSD, we have to keep watch because her size. What I hate the most, I’d when the IG jumps up at my 3 yr old grandson, his feet, and nails are at my grandsons face level, so it really irritates my grandson and it’s dangerous, I’m scared he’s going to get hurt. Any immediate steps we can take to stop the jumping? He loved the boys and the boys love him but the jumping has to stop. I’ve tried turning my back on him, or ignoring him, but haven’t seen any progress.

Italian Greyhounds are velcro dogs. They love to be close to you all the time. Sleep with you, sit with you. Especially since he was just adopted, he is going to be really clingy as he fears he will not stay with you. spend time with him. sit on the floor and cuddle him and love him. then put a soft bed on the floor beside you and put some yummy food in the bed. teach him laying in the bed beside you is where he gets the food rewards and also your pets. you can then slowly move the bed a foot away from where you are sitting and he will learn to lay in the bed. IG's need lots of cuddles and love. As he settles into your home, he may get a little more independent, but maybe not. you can put the bed on the floor and sit with him and feed him as he lays in the bed as your grand kids are playing. you are right to watch the size of the GSD when the dogs are close together. also you need to closely supervise the interaction with the 2 grand children and the IG. Small children do not realize they can hurt the IG with play. Small children should be sitting on the floor with the IG in their lap and never try to pick up the dog or carry it. When a child carries an IG, the dog may wiggle and jump out of their arms or fall and get hurt. you do not say the age of the IG. The young dogs need to be watched very carefully so they do not jump off the furniture and break a leg. if the IG is an adult, the bones are more formed but still need supervision with all small children. you may already know this information. IG's are special because they love to cuddle and be close. Thank you, Best, Joyce

@@DiamondDogTraining thank you so much for this advice. I will share it with my daughter. That’s the thing she loves most about him, and me too, as long as my covers are right, but I love the warmth of his nose as he sleeps with it in the crook of your neck. We just woke up from a nap together. I did notice today, with the 5 yr old grandson, when he’s jumping up on him, he reaches about his neck area, but with the 3 yrs old, when he’s jumping upon him, his feet and nails are directly at his face, mouth, nose and eyes area, and he’s just flailing them wildly, I’m so fearful my grandson will really be hurt. I read or watched something…” feet on the floor”…that is what needs to be our priority in training. Goose is 6 months old. Supposedly sold by a breeder to a military family and they got orders to go overseas the following day. The next day, my daughter had bought him. Please, some guidance on the “feet on the floor” would be much appreciated. The children sit on the couch or floor if they hold Goose. They are both supervised so Goose’s little legs won’t get hurt, or anything else. And we often caution the boys to be gentle, and theGSD when they really get to playing, to “slow things down” when it seems to be going a little too rough, or starting too.

Teach 4 on the Floor by using Goose dog food. Drop food on the floor to get Goose to look down as he is standing in front of you . Keep food on the ground as he is standing in front of the kids. Teach sit as he approaches a person . Goose wears harness and leash for control. You hold leash short. Before he jumps, reward for 4 on the floor . Joyce

They are sighthounds. They love to run. A fenced area is the best. There are some that naturally want to stay close and with lots of training, may be ok off leash . But you always need to be alert for the squirrel, rabbit chipmunk and be ready to grab the leash. Safety is always fenced area. Thank you . Joyce

My iggies lived for 14&15years respectively and off lead on a small farm and when we went into our small local towns. They would stay with me or sometimes in my van which was parked so that my dogs never had to cross a road to find me. This worked really well for my two sublimely perfect little ones.

I've never met a vet who didn't know how to anesthetize an IG. An IG properly exercised as a pup should have strength to endure what would cause a fracture. The biggest CON is cancers skittishness from over breeding!

My iggy always barks and snaps at other dogs while on the lead so everyone sees him as a aggressive small dog 😢it’s also very sad as when he goes to italian greyhound meet ups to socialise him he doesn’t quite bark but hides from them
@DiamondDogTraining
@DiamondDogTraining 25 дней назад
It sounds like he barks on walks because he is unsure of the dog. Also at the IG meetups there are lots of dogs. He is overwhelmed. Here is how you may help him . When 2 dogs walk close to each other walking the same direction, it is calming for both dogs. Do you have a friend with a. IG that will go for a walk with their dog and you and your dog in a quiet place. Just walk straight for a distance and then turn around and walk back to where you started. In the beginning, put the dogs on the outside and people in the middle as barriers. Try to choose a dog that is calm and will not jump in your dog. As you walk stop and let them sniff and continue walking. Just a quick sniff. As you walk, you want both dogs to relax and sniff each other. This is how I introduce 2 dogs who have never met. In time your dog will start to relax . Hope this helps. Your puppy needs to build confidence. Was your dog ever attacked or hurt or jumped by another dog. Fear will cause a dog to look aggressive. If you need help, you can contact a positive trainer in your area. It takes time to help a frightened dog to accept being close to another dog. Distance from the dog, lots of good food and short times your dog sees the dog are essential. Let me know how you are doing . Joyce

@@DiamondDogTraining When he was a puppy the lead broke after a big dog was barking at him and he ran and thought the big dog was chasing him 🥺He was so scared and sadly had a bit of a accident, i think that’s where his fear comes from. He ran for miles.

@@AbiObvs. Yes, that may be the reason he is so afraid of dogs. He has good reason. Do you have a positive professional trainer that can help you. You need to start so far away from the dog and position yourself do the dog is walking perpendicular to your dog and not coming toward you. Start with chicken or cheese and just sit or stand and feed your dog as the dog is passing . The dog should pass no closer than 30-40 feet. There are so many things you can do to help your puppy. Have you searched for a positive trainer .

Greyhound and Beagle both breeds bred to run. Possible your dog will always be on a long leash to prevent her running away. Check out my videos on teaching a puppy to come every time you call them. you will see I start with the long leash and when the puppy is coming every time i switch to a piece of rope i can cut into pieces. hope this helps to teach the puppy to come. Stay is a process. Start teaching stay without moving and increase the time before you move. Always release when you want the dog to move and then repeat. hope this helps, let me know how you are doing. joyce

I don’t have an Italian greyhound but I am considering getting one in the future. Currently I have a toy poodle. Sadly I didn’t head the warning about brushing her teeth. So now she only has two. The rest were removed by the vet. So, I am not sure it would matter what dog I got next I would brush their teeth. My poodle likes to wear clothes in the winter too. I love my little poodle but I am not sure I would want to get another poodle when she is gone as I think I would feel like I was replacing her instead of bringing in a new member of the family.

Man, Italian Greyhounds "sell" themselves like shrewd used-car salesman. I feel like people think I am actively trying to dissuade them from getting an IG when they meet my dog. I'm just trying to be real with them. I love the breed too. They definitely are not for everybody. And they'll never tell you that themselves.

Honestly, the only piece of advice I agree with in this entire video is the hot and cold sensitivity part. You will know though because your dog will likely whine and tell you they are cold. Our dog limps around if it is too cold and barks a bit. That's when we know it's time for winter boots/slippers. Literally everything else seems like overkill to the max. We have brushed her teeth 2-3 times and we have never had a broken leg despite her jumping. I do think that an Italian greyhound will likely have sensitive pawpads which can be tedious and annoying to bandage and treat. They don't like things on their feet, so they will pry them off at every opportunity if you bandage them up. Skin sensitivity - YES Most everything else? No. For us, at least. Your mileage may vary.
