I am Portuguese speaking and I understand most of the Latin languages so well. Especially Italian that most of the time, the Italian language, whether from the North to the South is embedded with so much Portuguese and Spanish words mixed in with Italian. Also, there are lots of French similarities in Italian but French can be tricky to understand them. I have studied French for 10 years! I get so sad 😭 when I encounter so many Italians, especially in my generation, can’t speak a word or neither understand anything in Italian. I am so fortunate to understand everyone because of speaking Portuguese as my native language and it transferred to Spanish as a child. As a matter of fact, I failed a lot in school, due to not knowing that much English. Now I am so glad this experience happened to me because I definitely can communicate and understand Italian. Whether it is spoken, written, (spelling is weird) lol 😂 in Italian. However, I do appreciate the Latin languages so well and love the Italian language as if it was my own language. I do know how to communicate in Italian, due to all the exposure of all the words it has in common with the other Latin languages!

I have an Italian Heritage from Sicily; HOWEVER, my entire family migrated to Argentina in the 1860s; And my mother is Cuban, although she studied in Italy as a teenager, she was a Ballerina, and learned to speak Standard Italian. For me, from Spanish--two mutually comprehensible Latin Languages--there is truly NO more beautiful language on earth as Italian. AND these Sicilian Terms are Great! I remember my Argentine Grandparents using terms like, "Acura-" "Taliarsi-" "Adina" for a Gallina, and Comu si? or Comu Siti--(Plural I guess) and good by, ni videmu(?) Argentina is very Italianized! oh, and CMQ lei e bellissima Donna! Ringraziuuuuuu per questo video, Signorinella Bella

You forgot Portuguese! A lot of Portuguese words in Sicilian as well. Portuguese with Sicilian “ Portuguese pronunciation with Italian, “ the letter “o” is pronounced “u” at the end . “ corpo” sounds like “corpu” “ano “ sound like “ anu “. Mulher 👩 for woman in Portuguese, “mulere “ I think that is how you pronounce in Sicilian. Portuguese “ Trabalho “ Sicilian “ travagilhu” I think that is how you pronounce it. The same pronunciation in Portuguese. Portuguese for pig 🐷 “ porco” same in Italian and Sicilian pronunciation. Portuguese “ Meu filho” “Minha Filha” ( My son/ My daughter) it is the same in Italian “ Mio figliò: “Mia figlia.” Listen to Portuguese from Portugal, you will be shocked 😳 how much Portuguese is in common with Italian. Especially with Sicilian as well!

Hi I am Portuguese and I heard that the Sicilian dialect has a lot Portuguese words and gestures. I love it !!! In Portuguese, we say “Anda Cá “ or “Vem Cá “ meaning to come here! Also, the word doe referring a thing, Portuguese will say “Isto” and in Sicilian is “kisto.” In Portuguese to go downstairs you say, “baixo” and I think in Sicilian Is “bassio “ same pronunciation in Portuguese “baixo” ( bi-shu) how you pronounce it. Then, to say you in a polite form, Sicilian will say “Vossia” and Portuguese is “Você” pronounce (vo-se). These are Portuguese expressions that are uniquely Portuguese and not Spanish. This is why I would love to learn more about the Sicilian dialect!
@valeriaingo4919
@valeriaingo4919 3 года назад
That's correct! Some words are very similar! I don't speak Portuguese but I noticed some of the similarities as I have a Portuguese friend I met in France a few years ago. So interesting! Actually in Sicilian to go downstairs is 'scinniri', but it's possible that it could be different in other towns. Glad you have such an interest in learning Sicilian!

Grazie! LOVE THIS CHANNEL... I spent 6 months learning Italian before my trip to Sicily. (It was a hard switch from Spanish)Let me tell you I didn't expect the huge language barrier due to the dialect. I think my italian would have been understood in the mainland. However they did appreciate my effort. My family has Sicilian roots so I did recognize the inflections and knew some typical phrases ...Google translate was key lol. With the older generation it was tough. I hope to live there in the next few years...the only way is immersion!

Sicilian (u sicilianu) is neither a dialect nor an accent. It is a not a variant of Italian, a local version of Italian, and it's not even derived from what became Italian. In fact, in truth, Sicilian preceded Italian as we know it.

Sicilian, Neapolitan, Piedmontese,Veneto, Romagnolo,Emilian, Ligurian and more that I forgot to mention are full-fledged languages that stem from Latin. The Italian constitution recognizes only two regional languages: Friulan and Sardinian. All of these languages have their own dialects and they don't come from Italian. Ligurian language has the Genovese dialect ( with a lilting similar to Brazilian Portuguese and French), Tabarchin dialect (basically an archaic form of Genovese spoken on two islands off the coast of Sardinia).

The distinction between a dialect and a language is far less clear than you make it sound. And it is very common that among several dialects, one is chosen as the standard of the "language". The other dialects will then be called dialects of that language, even if they are, of course, not derived from the dialect that is now called "standard". For instance: German dialects such as Bavarian are not derived from Standard German. English in Liverpool is not derived from the King's English or the English spoken in London, or on BBC. And so on.

Sicilian is a vernacular of Latin. It derives from Latin with Arabic, French and Spanish influences due to the many times it was concurred and inhabited buy those nations. Sicilian food has a lot of North African influences as well.

I grew up with an Italian father and Sicilian mother. In school and in later years I learned proper Italian - but not very well. I just realized that I can understand Sicilian and Calabrian better than I can understand proper Italian because it was ingrained in my head before I was 6 or 7 years old. So now I know why I have a hard time understanding Italian movies and have to use English subtitles. if they were in Sicilian or Calabrian I know I could understand about twice as much and probably wouldn't need subtitles.

I am not Italian , therfore I am not even interested in that , but my sister is married to an Italian . Every time I travel there I hear him commenting about some ppl who are from South , ppl we met or hear at the street speaking like in bad way ... He consider South Italians like primitive - too loud , too everything , those who brought bad name for Italians ( like mafia ) and.and.and. When we are on the beach he doesn't even wanna sit to close to ppl from south . He says that he could not stand the way they behave abd that they qren't real Italians... I think North and South deffinitly not in love 🤷🏻‍♀️... For me it is kinda crazy ... But maybe bcs I am from small coutry - Serbia .. Maybe in some other , bigger countries there would be also some diffrences North-South , idk. 😅 ... But still I think it is crazy ... I have also noticed that about Sardenians he doesn't have bad feelings . He says they are old ppl , from Paleo- times . BTW , he is from Friuli , Udine Crazy, just crazy for me

Only to find out that Sicilian is actually the closest dialect to Romanian! I am Portuguese American and I have a Romanian friend online who helps me speak in Romanian. It is so astonishing that Romanian looks and sounds more like Portuguese! We have so many words in common! “ Meu dor 🤕 “ both words in Portuguese and Romanian! “ Frumosa” both words exist in Romanian and Portuguese. Portuguese: “Fazes tu” ( you do ) sounds so much like Romanian! “Tu vez” Portuguese meaning “you see” same pronunciation with Romanian. Portuguese “jogador “ means player “ Jucător “ same pronunciation. Portuguese: “ Meu Irmão “ meaning my brother. In Romanian “ Meu Frate” Portuguese: “ Eu sou “ and Romanian: “ Eu sunt “ Meaning “I am.” Portuguese: “ fome “ and Romanian “Foame” it means “hunger “ in both languages! Even our Latin pronunciation are the same at times! It is amazing !

@@Plata-ori-plumbu Oh yes we have so much in common! I never thought I could learn Romanian and thought it was more Slovak or the belief it is more Russian based words. (This is the ignorant fact that in my area, there aren’t many Romanians around). I had watched a tv show once in the USA, I didn’t know what language was being spoken, but I could understand it lol 😂! When I saw the headlines from the channel, it was saying “Live TV from Romania 🇷🇴 in New York.” Then, I made some online Facebook friends that were from Romania and wanted to visit Portugal 🇵🇹. So I began to teach some Portuguese to them. When I went on their pages to write messages, I saw Romanians written messages and began to read them! I was so in shocked that I could understand and read some Romanian. I became interested in learning more about the Romanian language that I ended up in a group “ Learn Romanian.” Romanians helped me so much! I couldn’t believe how much we have in common among Portuguese and Romanian! We are at the far ends of the Latin languages, but yet we do come together with the words “I am.” Portuguese: “ Eu sou “ and Romanian “Eu sunt.” ❤️🇵🇹🇷🇴 I love this so much ! I wish I could learn a lot of Romanian and I am picking up some of it!

How do Sicilians pronounce these foods: capicola, calamari, ricotta, manicotta, mozarella? In New York, there is a big debate about how Italians *really* say these words. New York Italian-Americans insist they are pronouncing these words "correctly" according to "Southern dialect," but I've never seen anyone from Italy agree, even people who speak southern dialects.
@valeriaingo4919
@valeriaingo4919 3 года назад
These words are likely pronounced slightly differently all over Southern Italy due to the accents stemming from the regional dialects. That might be a good thing to cover in a future video, thanks! I have another video where I teach my in-law the pronunciations of some Italian words with similar characteristics. Maybe it could help. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sRhiTVKeqQE.html

@@valeriaingo4919 well, in New York and New Jersey, a lot of Italian Americans tend to INSIST the correct way to pronounce them is as follows, but I'm pretty sure they're completely wrong: capicola = gabagool calamari = galamahd ricotta = rigote manicotta = maneegote mozzarella = mootsarel Mostly, I've just heard real Italians say they're wrong, but they're usually Northern Italians. Haven't heard much about this from Southern Italians. The pronunciations are claimed to be from either Sicily or Calabria. American Italians in NY and NJ are really adamant about pronouncing these words like this and will correct everyone who doesn't speak like that. It's like some big matter of pride for them...meanwhile, every Italian chef I've ever seen or heard on any show has said they're completely wrong and it's some mangled American fake Italian dialect and they're making fools of themselves :)
@Miami799
@Miami799 2 года назад
@@AtacamaHumanoid I'm from NY as well and I agree 100%. I studied Italian for years when I was younger and those pronunciations are ancient and don't even phonetically match the words. Trust the real Italians, not the ones who only know culinary words.

I had thought my Sicilian girlfriend from Catania would understand it but she did not. Her father was from San fratello and his family spoke an amalgam of Italian and French. I think Siculu must be the closest language yet existing to Latin. Do you know anything about it?
