This is a huge favourite of mine. I originally read it thirty years ago but reread it a couple of years ago when visiting Sicily which was a perfect joy. There is a tension in the book that I found intense.

I have re-read in these days and that’s true: almost every page is intensely heartfelt, and the second to last chapter (death of Don Fabrizio) is on a higher level than the entire novel. To me, that’s perfection.

I agree with John David...I've heard about this one from many prominent writers who love it, and I need to read it!

It’s a very deep and personal look at the history of that period (1860) in Italy, by someone who came from a noble family and therefore knew exactly what he was talking about! Have you read any books by Leonardo Sciascia? He is more modern but he also is a writer to go to if one wants to understand Sicily (he wrote a lot about the Mafia).

Yet another classic I've always wanted to read, but have just never gotten around to it.

It’s so worth it. And different from many “standard” classics, unique. It doesn’t have one boring paragraph.

Ok, I will add that to the TBR for this year. It sounds amazing. I will also look for the movie.

What a great video! I read The Leopard in advance of a trip I took with my husband to Italy a year and a half ago. It was a phenomenal read. Welcome to BookTube. I look forward to more of your videos on Italian literature.

Great video, what amazed me about the Leopard is how condensed it was, every chapter & sentence seemed to be charged with some observation or thought. A book that will definitely stay with any reader

Thank you! I completely agree with you, his style is so tight and concise. The book might have some highs and lows in terms of lyricism, and some specialists see a few minor flaws in his stylistic choices, but every page is so heart-felt and the melancholy of memories is real. I recently found a 1960 documentary that showed (in the first 2 minutes) the coffee shop where Tomasi di Lampedusa wrote The Leopard. Awesome video, Tom! I've been meaning to read this one. Speaking of Italian literature, I recently discovered and obtained Lines of Light by Daniele Del Giudice, a forgotten novel (at least by English language readers) that was favored by Italo Calvino. This is George Salis from Goodreads by the way. : )

Your channel just came up on my RU-vid recommendations a couple of days ago, and I thought both of the reviews in this series were fantastic. Thank you! I read both books many years ago, in English, and they’re currently on my stack of books to read in Italian. My main interest as far as Italian literature goes is the period from the late 1800 - present, for a variety of reasons, and Levi and Tomasi di Lampedusa both fit right in. I’d love to hear your take on some of the other great authors of that period, e.g. Svevo, Silone, Moravia, Gadda, etc. ( You may have noticed I appropriated one of their names as my handle … he wasn’t using it anymore… 😁 )

@@tomlabooks3263 Fantastic! I started reading exclusively in Italian a little over 3 years ago as part of my own “immersion program”, and I really appreciate your synopses of books that I’ve either read or have bought and are on the TBR list. It helps me decide which one to read next. And you’ve given me a couple of new ones to consider. Even just focusing on the best literature, Strega winners, etc, the list is very long. I’m currently reading Quer pasticciaccio brutto de Via Merulana … that slowed me down quite a bit until I learned the trick of reading it aloud to myself. The dialects he uses (or makes up) are much easier to understand when I hear it… But I would LOVE to hear your take on that one!
@tomlabooks3263
@tomlabooks3263 Год назад
@@dinosilone7613 Well, that one has a lot of Roman dialect in it - not very easy for me, either!! But it’s such a fun book.

I saw Luchino Visconti's film version of The Leopard about a year ago and was totally mesmerized by it, such a great film! Of course, I had to read Lampedusa's novel shortly after. I must say I preferred the film. Maybe because I read the novel in Finnish, I don't know, or because I read it so soon after watching the film. I hope to re-read the novel in Italian some day. Clearly there is some great writing in that novel, as shown in that mouth-watering food depiction you read to us.

Sorry about my delayed reply. Yes, that film is such a visual joy ! And musical as well. You might be right... Try to give the English translation a shot, and see how that works for you! I'd love to hear your thoughts.

If you saw the movie adaptation which came out a few years after the publication of the novel, did you have any reaction to it?
@tomlabooks3263
@tomlabooks3263 Год назад
Yes I did see that movie adaptation, and I remember liking it a lot. Especially the reconstruction of the Gattopardo palace, the lavish costumes, the banquet and the ball scene. The ancient Sicilian town and landscape in the background gave it a special beauty.

When it come to politicians, can I say COSI FAN TUTTE?: - What would the Senate do with me, an inexperienced legislator who lacks the faculty of self-deception, essential requisite for anyone wanting to guide others....Now you need young men, bright young men, with minds asking ‘how’ rather than ‘why,’ and who are good at masking, at blending, I should say, their personal interests with vague public ideals. Don Fabrizio ("The Leopard")

If THE LEOPARD could be described as a novel lacking a conventional hero, then could the following be said about it?: - ...Individuals and society are driven by the worship of wealth, rank, power, and class and are corrupted by them ...Men and women are not heroic... (Said of Thackeray's VANITY FAIR: A NOVEL WITHOUT A HERO )
@tomlabooks3263
@tomlabooks3263 Год назад
I'd say "yes" it lacks a conventional hero, although the Prince of Salina is definitely the hero of the novel. In painting this decadent character, Tomasi di Lampedusa was celebrating the life of his own grandfather, and the world that he used to represent. Not a conventional, enemies-defeating hero, but a man who symbolizes an entire era. About the sentence that says "men and women are not heroic": it's a statement that highlights the difference between fiction and reality, so I don't see how it relates to The Leopard, which is very much a biography.
