THE PRESENT TENSE
The indicative is the most common and frequent verbal mood. It's used to indicate a fact, an action or an idea that are real, certain and objective.
Let's discover together how to form the present tense!
First of all, let's see the present indicative of the verbs "essere" and "avere", the very first verbs to know when studying a language, also because they act as auxiliaries to form the compound tenses of other verbs (in this video you’ll find out in which cases we use the auxiliary "essere" and in which cases the auxiliary "avere": learnamo.com/essere-avere/ )

What happens to other verbs? It depends on their ending in the infinitive! In Italian there are 3 different endings: -ARE, -ERE, -IRE. The present is formed by removing these endings of the infinitive and adding those of the present indicative.
Here are the endings of the present for the various groups of verbs:

N.B. If the verb ends in -NERE, it will always follow the conjugation of "tenere", that is adding the g to the 1st singular person and the 3rd person plural!
What happens to verbs in -IRE? In the present indicative, verbs can follow the conjugation of the verb "partire" or that of the verb "finire":

But how do I know if a verb follows the conjugation of one or the other?
Unfortunately there isn’t a perfect rule, but only a "tendency" that is almost always right (even if there are some exceptions!!!).
Starting from the last letter of the verb in the infinitive, count to 5. The letter you stop on is...
A consonant? Then the verb tends to follow ththe conjugation of "partire"
A vowel? Then the verb tends to follow th conjugation of "finire"
Examples:
Dormire → io dormo… / Riempire → io riempio…
Sparire → io sparisco… / Preferire → io preferisco…
Dorme sempre dalle 23 alle 8, infatti è sempre riposato.
Preferiscono parlare di persona piuttosto che chattare sui social.
