RN Littorio was the first Italian battleship to be commissioned in the Second World War. 3 battleships were built from the Littorio class namely Littorio, Roma and Vittorio Veneto. Littorio was hit by 2 British torpedoes during the Attack on Taranto (12 November 1940), suffered heavy damage and took 4 months to repair. Her performance in Mediterranean was limited due to insufficient fuel. After the fall of Mussolini's government, the Italian Government decided to surrender in September 1943, all Italian naval ships sailed to British base in Malta and the Littorio was renamed Italia.
