When we talk about Italian verbs, it's important to address passato prossimo and imperfetto, two important verbs in Italian. Many people wonder when to use passato prossimo vs imperfetto, and getting a complete answer to this question can be difficult. Often times, this causes Italian language students to dread Italian verbs, along with the next step which is learning all about past tense in Italian and future tense. To make things easier for you, I decided to put together this video where I go over when to use passato prossimo vs imperfetto, and the past tense of each of the verbs.

I’m a native Spanish speaker, and when I took Spanish in high school to learn proper writing, la mia professoressa gave us key words to trigger our spoken verb conjugations. “Cuando era niño...” was what we used to trigger the imperfect! È buono sapere che è molto simile all’italiano!!

Can you provide a brief explanation of the different Italian past tenses and when/how they are used, please? I think I understand each of these 3: Present Perfect, Past Imperfect, and Past Perfect UNTIL I try to use them, and then they all just run togethe into one confusing mess. Thank you.
@andrewwilliams9580

I learned Spanish many years ago. My way of learning these Italian conjugations rapidly is to find verbs that are cognages. For example: abandonar - abandonare. I open up the verb tables of both languages at the same time to compare and contrast. In tricky sentence structure in Italian, I ask myself "how would I construct this in Spanish?" My teacher asked me "how would you construct it in French?" when I began Spanish.
