Brilliant game, Gazza was amazing, kept everything moving fluently, great skill, vision, simple passes, creating chances, link up play, pure class act. Hoddle made the stupid decision not to take him to France 98. Maybe Gazza would have been a little more stable in his mind if he was allowed to bow out of the world stage as his football talent deserved.

Probably last great game of The Great Paul Gascoigne. He was ruling the pitch.

Probably the best football i ever seen England play, just a pity they went backwards after that.

Whilst I agree Hoddle should never have been hounded out, your assessment of the team at that time is somewhat clouded by emotional nostalgia. England were criticised quite heavily (as is usually the case) in the '98 campaign. The questions back then are exactly the same that remain right now.

Oh and Hoddle has the second best record as England manager.

I remember Ian Wright giving the best display of centre forward running and closing down I ever saw. He ran his bollocks off that night and was unlucky not to get the winner. Hoddle got England playing well but his decision not to take Gazza to France 98 was perhaps a mistake. We'll never know!

I disagree. Look at that team's spine; Cambell in defence, Ince, Batty and Scholes in midfield and Shearer up front with an emerging Owen. I think the importance of Scholes was underestimated. You only have to read about how Xavi and Iniesta used to watch videos of Scholes to improve their techniques, to understand the quality of the player. Harry Redknapp recently said that England's best chance of world cup victory was in '98. Don't forget they won 'Le Tornoui' in '97.

By far the most entertaining England game I've seen in my days!!!

What a fucking player Gazza was. He was still, at this stage, England's best player. An absolute travesty Hoddle never took him to France.

I remember as a kid reading in the paper about the missed chances from both teams during the last thirty seconds .About Ian Wright (whom I only knew as the Premiership's top scorer back) first hitting the post , followed by Italy nearly scoring. I knew about the tensions heading into the game after seeing TV news reports days before the game of visiting England fans being physically and verbally abused by Italians. So I had to come here see the game highlights and aforementioned misses.I was finally able to do so thanks to RU-vid and the uploader of the video.

Once again a beautiful royal powerful and proud european nation qualified for the World Cup by playing 0-0 away against Italy =)

What an amazing, heart-stopping last minute in this match. Wright hits the post then straight up the other end and Vieri misses by inches with a header.

First football game I ever watched on TV. Been etched in my brain ever since.
