The strait of messina bridge aims to be the longest suspension bridge in the world, connecting Sicily with mainland Italy. How do you build one of the biggest bridges in the world in harsh conditions and what is the insane engineering behind The strait of messina bridge?

As a Sicilian now living in the north of Italy, I am well aware of the deficiencies in transportation and public services infrastructure on both sides-Sicily and Calabria. I believe that the bridge would significantly boost the economy by enhancing connectivity, attracting tourism, and encouraging investment. With the bridge acting as a catalyst, it’s reasonable to expect that roads and railways will gradually receive the necessary upgrades to support increased traffic and economic activity. What’s the alternative? Continue relying on an inefficient and less reliable ferry system that may not meet future demands? The construction of this bridge is not just a matter of improving current transportation options but a strategic investment in the future prosperity of our regions.

I think it's absolutely fantastic! If they can build it I think they should go ahead and do it. Italy is my next trip to Europe. That would be amazing to see it started by the time I go!

Talvez viva o suficiente para vê-la construída e em função do sucesso ainda escute pessoas dizendo que precisam de uma segunda ponte.

An italian here: I'm convinced by the fact that a big structure like this could be useful for Sicily, to move easier goods and people, but I'm not convinced by the strategy behind it. I mean, it could be completely useless if there will not be a proper infrastructure both in Sicily and in Calabria. I have cousins there and they told me about the terrible lack of infrastructures. We will see if there will be any change about the whole project, not only about the bridge itself
@marcobeardo985
@marcobeardo985 Месяц назад
The project includes a lot of infrastructure to be built along with the bridge, actually at a cost that would even exceed the one of bridge itself. So, there will be infrastructure around it in the end.

Must be done given the total positive economic impact once all the adverse conditions are overcome and planned for. There a many projects around the world that have been in the same positions prior to but have now become very important once completed.

A friend quit his inspection role on a Chinese suspension bridge because they filled used boxes of welding rods with counterfeit rods and pretended they were high quality. They then copied the best x-ray image of welding and used it to replace all new X-ray images of new welded joints. Good luck

Shouldn't your friend report the problem to the highest authority as an inspector should? I doubt the authenticity of this personal story.

China has built countless big infrastructure projects and literally hundreds of bridges that are engineering marvels, including some in US, Europe, Africa and South America. Don't believe your friend.

Cool! I love big long bridges. But what about a tunnel if the circumstances are so bad? There are so many undersea tunnels already so this doesn't sound like a big deal here.

The problems are not technical, there have been over the years many studies which attest the feasibility of the bridge; the main problem are the money.

A small investment in the prosperity of the regions. However, the WeBuild bridge needs improvement. In particular, the piers need to stand in the water so barges can bring bridge segments to the landward side and thus replace heavy concrete viaduct with cheaper more flexible steel as per the spans over water. Thus the span should be reduced to 3150 metres, and the piers (mid point of cable to) raised to 400 metres. The sag will be 315 metres to mid point of cable bottom - thus mid point of cable bottom will be 85 metres A.S.L. Thus the length to sag ratio will be 10:1, down from 11:1 with a 3000 metre span and a 300 metre sag - mid point of cable bottom 82.6 metres.

Uma ponte em que os pilares estarão em solo oferece o menor dos impactos ambientais. Por sinal, acho que o meio ambiente irá lucrar, com menos balsas navegando pelo estreito.

I think they should go for a floating bridge rather than a standing bridge. A floating bridge has minimal geological risk in a severe earthquake area.

Was there ever a tunnel option? And what were the arguments against that solution?
@lucacasagrande2456
@lucacasagrande2456 3 месяца назад
That strait is a very mess geologically speaking: it's a very active geological site, with many fractures and tectonic plates. The solution of a suspended bridge is the best way of doing it
@AlainCh2.

The straight is a geological valley 300mt deep at some point. Just imagine how much it should be long .... to go down and then up at less the 2% > 300*50= more than 15km + is a geological main rift between Africa and Europe

1st - Wrong price. The new bridge has finally been approved by the government. Almost £10 billion (€11.6 billion) has been earmarked for this project. To be finished by 2030 ????? 2 nd - Forget the Sicilians or Italians or Europeans to build it. 3 rd - Get the China to build it in less than 5 years. And half the cost. Built proper to spec. No country is Better in building bridges. FACT !!!

Bridge in picture (not 3 D) means in maket, was made by Berlusconi more than 20 years ago. I don"t thing this bridge is gonna build ever. Why?! Because of mafia. They don"t want to build this bridge. This bridge is gonna destroy mafia business. Is so simple....✍✍✍
@marcobeardo985
@marcobeardo985 Месяц назад
I am not sure that it would ruin mafia business. Huge business of both mafias (Sicilian and Calabrian) is the drug trafficking, which is much easier and less risky if the span between Italy and Sicily takes 5 minutes instead of 1h onboard a ferry.
