Because they came from the Sanremo festival where it's obligatory to sing in italian

Nelle prime due frasi della canzone entriamo subito in contatto con William Shakespeare ed Erich Fromm. L’iconico “Essere o non essere”, la frase d’apertura del monologo recitato da Amleto durante la scena del convento nell’omonima opera di Shakespeare, incontra il libro di Fromm “Avere o essere?”, pubblicato nel 1976. Nella sua opera, lo psicanalista tedesco menziona la corsa della società moderna al materalismo e di come la gente preferisca il “dovere” all'”essere”. Gabbani utilizza lo stesso concetto come punto cardine di “Occidentali’s Karma”. Quando canta del fenomeno internet, Francesco cita gli Alcolisti Anonimi (AA), l’associazione, diffusa in tutto il mondo, che si occupa del recupero di persone che hanno problemi di dipendenza da alcool. Tuttavia egli suggerisce che a dover essere aiutati oggi nel recupero siano gli ossessionati dai selfie. E cosa dire del “panta rei” (“tutto scorre”)? Il motto, enunciato dal filosofo pre-socratico greco Eraclito, ci ricorda che nella vita “tutto si muove e nulla sta fermo, non potresti entrare due volte nello stesso fiume” perché “in quel fiume sopraggiungeranno acque sempre nuove QUESTO È IL SIGNIFICATO DELLA CANZONE...NON LA SCIMMIA.

Unfortunately there was the habit of voting songs in French language: anyway nobody remembers Dors mon amour, an old-fashioned song that won for France, whereas Modugno's song is popular all over the world!!

Sì bella canzone giusta per quei tempi

Mina participated only twice in Sanremo (1960 and 1961), when she was very young, and after the 1961 results she was so disappointed (for so many reasons) that she vowed never to participate in any competition again, and so she did. From the same year onwards she became bigger and bigger and absolutely unattainable, absolutely out of any competition. He was too brilliant as an artist and as a person, and has been known to abdicate from the public scene since 1978, and still does today. Great Italian artists often refuse to compete (more or less by the 60s), because every competition is first and foremost a place for promotion, which minor artists deserve much more. Sanremo has managed to deal with this problem thanks to our solid artists with solid careers (not all of them, of course) and the formulas of reception and celebration. ESC is a different story. If you knew, since then, how many Italian artists would have to tread the Eurovision stage besides Mina.... What Europe saw from the boot nation was all in all good, but only a scorch mark of its musical glory. Just think of names like Claudio Baglioni, Gianna Nannini, Giorgia, Elisa, Adriano Celentano, Zucchero, Milva, Ornella Vanoni, Patty Pravo, Lucio Dalla, Lucio Battisti, Vasco Rossi, Subsonica, Raffaella Carrà, Nel, Max Gazzè, Carmen Consoli, Eros Ramazzotti… plenty. I could continue for hours, but, of course, everybody abroad knows perhaps just one or two italian artist randomly, or in some way they don't even know who they are or where they're from, or some cover version. But it's not just a simple matter of greatness, is the fact that a lot of music from Italy could please european audience above ESC entries, and now it's wonderful easy thanks to internet, but before… In general, ESC is more about the event, the party all together, the visuals and promotion of tendencies. There was no point for divas like Mina. Before 90s maybe it was more songs-about, but sounds to silly for divas like Mina that was already a big seller in 1961s japanese market! (don't compare with Gigliola, whom is big in ESC: absolutely two different stories, especially from an italian context perspective) As an italian, I know that - about music - ESC is just like a game in kinda a christmas dinner with European siblings, not the whole life! Italians that are not insanely competitive as hell, really don't care about to win. But… about partying and being appreciate, they do! Therefore we do pick the winner pearl of Sanremo, like when you bring a gift at home's host, and you like to present the best cake or wine you can :)

Sinceramente Dors mon amour rappresentava il passato, il vecchiume, Modugno era una ventata di novità, ma, ahimé le giurie erano troppo abituate a votare canzoni in francese; anche nel 1961 Al di là era di gran lunga la canzone più bella del festival .. e invece fu votata la solita solfa in francese

@samonen Yup, that's true. Some Finnish artists have done covers of Italian songs between the 70s and the 90s. For example Ami Aspelund with "Libera" (Mia Martini, 1977)

LOL, Finnish people can enjoy universal art, like everyone! And maybe Battiato is the good one for the taste of Finland people, while other prefers Laura Pausini, just to make an extreme comparison!… Share some taste is always possibile. In terms of sharing the same talent, we can't say. Talent is present in every culture, and everybody are the best (or the most lucky!) ones in something. Battiato is one of the geniuses of Italian music. His uniqueness is hard to explain, but it is good to know that there is someone abroad who likes him, even if they don’t catch the whole meaning inside because the language (he use so many articulate quotes that’s hard for any italian!). And not just for the pleasure itself, but because it is an example of how pop music can be easy and enjoyable, but again deep and rich as great art use to be. Alice used to be one of his “muse”. A real artist as well. I feel like a miracle to get it so widespread on the mainstream ESC stage… well… maybe was just cause the 80s!
