We need to soak in all the knowlege we can get from the hip hop pioneers while they still here. This man has done too much for what we now call the culture when it was just getting started. The influence is heavy on so many artist that followed. Then just the fact he was a part of the team that crafted Nas' Illmatic would be enough but from tribe to his solos to his behind the scenes work I'm still learning about now.

You also have to put in perspective not where an individual grew up at but also how the label corners these artist. Catch one at his least time with excitement by taking them somewhere and getting them food they never ate or women they never had. Also add expensive alcohol more than likely ganja and a pen and paper and bam they just signed there talent away for pennies and label will make millions.

@@carlosrob6494 That's the trick.....ignorance of the fact you don't know the "trick" does not absolve the person or individual from being tricked because at the end of the day it happened. Its on the individual to INFORM himself whether he was ignorant of the trickery, or knew but looked the other way. Business NEVER is fair, they sought to CAPITALIZE on the INVESTMENT in a cultural expression. Now a cultural expression does not represent the TOTALITY of culture but rather a business arrangement to extract profit from it. The label always will have the leverage in that situation because the CAPITAL is on their side and helps to project you to the masses. The great thing today is that rappers can prove their worth in the marketplace without a LABEL, but the sacrifice is NOT possibly being EXPOSED on a major level and/or making as much upfront bread. But how much sweat equity are you willing to put up for that SUCCESS!!!

Because white record execs knew they could take advantage of poor black kids, until those kids grew up created their own labels and continued the cycle instead of breaking it. It happens to pop and country too but most of them conform because of the lifestyle.

TBH I think he is being a realist....you can't expect any business entity to reflect the total essence of a cultural expression. IMO no medium can truly do it. Hip-Hop culture lives with the people and expressed everyday, that's not the same as the rap business. In the industry you got to handle business to get your worth out of it. Hip-Hop culture and rap business are two different things. That has gotten lost because people equate Hip-Hop with Rap.

Nawwww what he is doing is giving the mindset of a money hungry business man. And only adding fuel to the fire, that is destroying one genre of music. If I forget to close my window prior yo going out and someone comes in through the window and stole my TV then that person is rightfully termed a thief. Granted, I should have been much more careful in making sure my window was shut but it does not take away that the act committed against me is thievery. Saying it is acceptable to steal because the other party do not know any better is excusing the wrongdoer and blame the victim. That's some twisted logic!

Is business ever really fair? The business between a consumer and manufacture is only as fair as, I purchase a product and I get the service from said product but in reality 9/10 you are paying a lot more for a product then it’s actually worth. Nike shoes aren’t really worth $200 to manufacture yet the consumer is purchasing it for 5x it’s mark up. Hypothetically, that’s not “fair” but that’s business and no one is forcing you to participate.

I think that's a great point but in some terms their has to be a fairness. If not then the ability to get compensation for being cheated in some way would not be possible if their wasn't any fairness to be expected at all. I think with anything it is susceptible to corruption and the unfairness is made due to those that are willing to corrupt. It also involves law and the system of the law is not fair in total but again that is corrupt due to the actors that created the laws and the inevitable flaw due to not all variables can be accounted for due to the fact that not all variables are present during the inception of the laws

it almost sounds like Q-tip didn't learn his lesson, of course business has a culture, browse any business bookstore aisle and you can see that, there is a philosophy by a small minority in business that you don't have to be cutthroat, you can be fair, but the majority definitely don't operate by that belief. Anyway, Q-tips tip to perform an audit of your record company is something I've never heard before in that industry so that was a great tip, you better be a money maker though, cause they're not gonna like that lol

I'm sorry but we live in the age of information and artists have been getting jerked for decades now. If you decide to do business with a label, you have to know they're out to screw you. Common sense would tell me that I should negotiate from a position that these people are trying to take advantage of me. Or you go independent, grind for a while and cut out the industry completely. That being said, I can't feel bad for new artists that decide to get involved with a major label. It's like the saying goes if you lie down with dogs, you'll wake up with fleas.

The music business has never been fair since the Motown years of exploitating blues, rock, and early pop stars. It was those same music executives and labels that started pushing hip-hop once it proved to be the new wave and most profitable music genre. They rob these artistes blind and make it a way that exploitation is now the expected norm, easily tagged as "paying your dues" which is downright evil because there's enough money to be made in all fairness. They cornered the distribution game since they got in bed with these streaming services(Spotify, Apple, and so) running Playlists and ensuring they never lose in any sales war by controlling sales/radio, who even determines than 1500 streams is equivalent to 1 hard copy sales metrics ? They keep switching it and don't even account for radio completely dominated by the majors, payola is the norm and therein lies "marketing budget" to get spins but the industry makes it hush-hush because it's illegal.

However, I’m not feeling someone (dude in dreads) who has never done what the guest(QTip) has done, trying to tell said guest what something is or isn’t. QTip repeatedly told buddy that it’s not culture and dude kept saying it is. He’s wrong. Business IS business. However, the MUSIC BUSINESS is it’s own standalone entity. No other business model is able to get away with what the music business does. You can’t even sue your way out of a music business deal. There are no lawyers that truly understand music contracts. It’s crazy. EVERYONE gets raped. E.V.E.R.Y.O.N.E!!! Like the lox said, once you sign you can not escape the rape Dude in dreads thinks the music business is like any other business. There actually is a Musician’s Union, there are different chapters in different cities. I don’t know of any rappers who are in the Musician’s Union, but I doubt they would turn away rappers if they want to join, and most of all are willing to pay union dues and fees. What might be even better would be maybe a rappers union or general hip-hop union maybe similar to the Screen Actors Guild (the musician’s union mostly deals with music performance, SAG is more comprehensive). I think one of the major issues that maybe has stopped rappers from unionizing, is that a union would completely go against the interests of major labels. major labels just like any other large corporation are more than likely completely opposed, and would probably do everything possible to stop even the thought of unionizing.
@jman1562001
@jman1562001 2 года назад
Not to mention unionizing is in a effect "collectively bargaining" on behalf of all rappers. Most rappers are basically "independent contractors" to extent. Would they come together to have a representive represent their interest. IDK, some probably would do a deal with a major and take that upfront money over a collective effort for less paper but better potential long term bread. It's a sacrifice for sure tho!!!

Yeah, I agree most rappers would probably take the upfront advance labels offer rather than enter a into a collective bargaining agreement with a union, and have to pay union dues. Unions can still represent independent contractors most musicians in the musicians union are independent contractors, except for maybe the musicians on Broadway, SNL band, etc…. there is a minimum that has to be paid no matter what, but the SNL band isn’t being paid what the band in the local coffee shop is, there’s room to negotiate, but through the union. May not even be a possibility, but I think ideally rappers would be able to be signed to major, or independent labels, and have a union behind them. Not tryna promote unions in any sense they’re not perfect, but unions could also help rappers with health care, a pension, unemployment etc… if they get dropped from a label shelved, royalties, show money dries up, or whatever.

GOOD BUSINESS IS FAIR EXCHANGE PERIOD!!!!!!

I agree with Tip on this but idealism in business isn’t going to work for you unless you run your own business (independent). The long and short of it is we let the majors take care of the business and the independents faded away…..we lost control of business that could’ve been congruent with the culture. History has shown us that independent is the way forward.

To an extent, but let's be real too....Most artist ain't got the bread all the time to invest in themselves. How many folks are willing to put in the SWEAT EQUITY to handle all the affairs that a LABEL tradtionally will do. From marketing, to promotions, to studio time, etc. all that COST. And PR teams to expose you to millions. It's a literal machine against your 5-10 man operation. Independence is great, but its a sacrifice. And that sacrifice comes at a cost, no one is exempt!!! Even Tech Nine type had to put that 10 years of work to establish his quality fanbase, touring 9 months a yr, a strict touring schedule, showing up on time, spending that time with a fanbase to gain supporters. IT's WORK!! While investing the same money you made back into yourself and your music. This is before you even see a PROFIT!!!

“Yall cant make money with the artist” i used to think that way but now i see labels can make their own artists no talent needed.
