So cool :) Also congrats of hosting of "Sounds like" on Andertons, thats just too good to be true! Really a match made in heaven! Love you guys, keep being you you're awesome!
Some of the Hondo 2 guitars were made in the Matsumoku factory, alongside Antoria (Ibanez for UK market),Tokai , Squier (when they were good, first series) and others. Charvel, Aria Pro2 and Westone came later. Hondo were essentially a catalogue guitar, mail order. I am slightly obsessed with guitars made there. LOVE 'EM!
My first guitar was a strat copy my mum bought me back in '96, that looked liked that. The brand was "Jim Harley" and I literally melted it, to the point that only the body survives to this day. Since she passed away I 've been thinking of rebuilding it for sentimental reasons. Seeing that guitar and listening to Dave playing it, I made me make up my mind and will start purchasing parts. Keep playing an uploading Dave, cheers from Athens...
I really enjoy your appreciation for guitars that some people might turn up their nose at or completely disregard. It's so much more interesting watching this kind of stuff vs. other channels all demo'ing the exact same brand-new gear on release day.
Dave: "it's a lovely bit of ash" Sean Connery: "well, thank you, I do try" Love Dave's enthusiasm for just about everything guitar. And that guitar sounds awesome. Although to be fair, I think Dave could play a kitchen pan with rubber bands for strings and it would sound amazing.
I have the same guitar with the same natural finish of ash but Japanese, bought last year. Strat of the 70s with the nut bullet and 3 screws on the neck plate. I like natural finishes. Greetings from Spain.
Dave I have to say this, You are in my eyes one of the Greatest guitar players that this world gets to enjoy. I've been watching your videos for years and it pleases me to see your channel growth. We all have our struggles at times but we persevere and play on. I wish you nothing but true happiness my friend, your a treasure to this world indeed.
My first guitar was a 1982 Hondo 760 series (Strat) guitar in candy apple red. My parents bought it for me when I was 5 when I got jealous that my brother just got one. Lol. It was too big for me and never touched it. It lived in a case for 38 years until I pulled it out, got it set up and started taking lessons with it. Fast forward to today and the only thing that I would ever consider replacing is the electronics. The guitar itself is incredible. The neck is fat and awesome. My parents bought it for me so I would never sell it but I may soon upgrade some things.
The one's you bring back to life are keepers. I've got a 2005 Squier Bullet SSS HT that's been repaired, that I've done some work and put myself into. So it's going nowhere, not that anyone would pay much for it as a 17 year old Squier Bullet. So it's one of my first reaches & daily players.
I've been a great fan of your channel for a while (years) and so I have been very fond of natural ash body strats my whole life, I own one in fact. I was very curious of this guitar, it always caught my eye on your collection vids. Happy to hear its story in full. You're an inspiration, Dave, thanks for the video 😀
And that's why he has so many guitars, amps etc....... I mean "Dave is Dave"..... But every guitar and amp has a different tone and "feel"..... Thanks for sharing.........
This is absolutely up my street. I've been playing for about seven years now and made my way through a few decent guitars however I still find myself coming back to my first guitar. A pretty basic Strat copy, which always had a fantastic neck on it. I've never wanted to part with it and always wanted to keep it useful, guitar shops I've taken it to for advice have often told me just to save money and 'buy a new one'. Cut a long story short, I've completely changed up the neck set-up, new body, new pickups etc and it sounds great. I think it adds a lot to your playing to play something you genuinely love and have a story with :)
I said it before ..You are up there with Clapton and others..Amazing playing..I wish you the best..The guitar was crying to play and you played it beautifully.
that there was a performance to remember my friend. i forgot about the guitar and enjoyed the journey you took me on with that set of music. a particle of water or two left my eye at a couple of times aswell, that was highly emotive playing and writing. incredible mate.
I completely forgot about this strat copy (got a bit carried away with the bat-o-caster) That neck pickup is something rather special, never heard a single coil like it, all three pickups have metal base plates as I recall. So much mojo in that geeetar!!!
Oooooh, the suspense after the high E string quit the band! I was thinking he's going to change it, but no no no, you carried on like a trooper! (Or at least like someone who didn't have another string to hand.) Fine work, my good man.
Dave, I love the way you paid homage to that guitar, showing that it had been loved by the wear on the fingerboard - many many hours of playing. Well it is now back to doing what it was designed to do, and that is make music, which as you proved, it is very capable of doing that, even with just 5 strings! Well done and take care!
Awesome guitar, and to think it went all those years being loved despite it's flaws. It must be very grateful to you for doctoring it up, now it can sing with the best of them
Just got myself my first proper Fender on the way. A Duo Sonic HS, I cannot wait! Got a bunch of nice stuff, but it's for a special birthday. ☺. Great stuff Dave.
Sometimes it takes a bit of love to get a bit of love back with guitars. I have a cheap Chantry charity shop guitar bought new on a rain ruined holiday that I have put hours of work into and it is the one I automatically reach for (although it needs a re-fret now). Sadly no matter how many years of practice I put in the results are never at Dave Simpson level.
That model Hondo was the first guitar I ever owned, My mum got it for me from Grattons (maybe Great Universal) catalogue for probably 75p a week for 56 weeks, I live fairly close to Louth...... maybe that's the one :o)
Not being funny, I've been subbed to you for a whole heckin' while 👀. That 'strat' has a tonne of life in it! I get why the guy gave it to you too, it resonates with you! Don't know what it is about guitars. Sometimes feels almost like they choose you. That one defenitely is greatful to be home! Also, I don't see what the problem is in appreciating a nice piece of Ash! OH, oh. Wait... Yeah. I see it now. 😂🍑
just been on andertons. congratulations. ps in the late 70s early 80s no guitar mags or stuff. but every body of the day got the action as low as poss. had a westone super strat...and a denim jacket straight out of the catalogue. from the woman down the road.... keep up the good work...
as always,⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐. love an epic tale of a humble little axe. i know exactly what you mean about an individual instrument coming into its true potential through the right tinkering after a long life of being a guitar like object🤘
Sold mine in about 87 for a Tokai Tele. The original bridge was *appalling* and used to cut your hand. Wouldn’t surprise me if only the wood was actually original.
Wow!!! Sounds great. I have a US made Peavey Predator from the early 90’s that has a very similar story to your guitar. It plays and sounds good now but needed work. It had been very well loved but was a mess.
Dave, I have a tri color sunburst Hondo II, black scratch guard and pickups with maple neck, it has a 3 saddle telecaster style bridge that looks like it may have had a cover at some point. The neck is a bit of a bat though, haven’t played it in years.
Bet you're glad you put the time and effort in to get it sorted as it seems to be cooking on gas now. Weird headstock for a strat with the nut sitting on it.
The guitar is a sacred thing to you as it is to me, isn't it? I truly believe I'd have died a long time ago were it not for the guitar and the music from Elsewhere that it allows me to bring forth. It's alchemy, it's the magic of transmutation that has granted me grace and the chance to turn pain into joy. And here I am, watching and hearing you do this too. Man, this is beautiful, this is art, how everything else in the world shines so brightly but on the inside it's empty, dead, without heart and soul. But music. The guitar. Never _ever_ will it let us down. Thanks for this, Dave. Now I don't feel quite so alone. **And that last part! FUCKyeeeeaa!*** **Note #2. The guitar is bad _ASS!_ **
Man you are so inspiring to me thank you so much . I watched this whole video... And funny enough, I broke a strong just idk 20 minutes before you did!! In this video at least lmao. 😂 low E tho... I was chugging and digging in like a frigging monster... Felt real good. Tone was with me too. Gugh I love that. I can only spit the beer I taste after that and relish in extreme enjoyment , solitude asf . beautiful. But anyway, that was great. So many I question you... And I thank you as well yea crazy fool... You taught me how to use a Marshall MG. Fudge! I recently had to sell my tube amp I used to run my POD go thru... And I ACTUALLY LOVED IT. But I'm back to a Marshall MG carbon fiber 30 watt thing. I know you can run theses things to unbelievable strengths.. Dude, I've seen you , I've felt you... Lol that's gross. But you can pull some amazing tones out of this I'm sure. Please share how I may as well. How would you run this right? I've learned from you with these amps.. Turn the bass down!!! I do. As well as the trombone. And I thank you they have helped. But my brother I'm still dismayed. What would you do with this right! FK I talk too much. GD bleesss? And thanks man. Love your music and vids and every quietly thing you do... As am i
Hi dave, I was wondering, I know you have all your pedals going through the front of the amp, but what about the boss looper? Is that in the fx loop? Cheers mate, that jam was epic.
@@thedavesimpson ah OK, so the looper is last in the chain? Distortions then delays ect then looper? Sorry to hassle you, I'm really falling In love with your tones.
I was just thinking... what if Dave had been born in 1948, and lived three doors down the street from David Gilmore. The Dave & David Experience And, he was cousins with Brian Auger. who dated a girl that knew Robert Plants mom. But he wasn't...
That guitar looks a lot like Blackmores guitar that he used at the Cali Jam in 1974 , I love the look of the 70s Strat's but every time I've played one they have been awful , My fav Strat era is the 1960s one as the necks on those guitars just feel perfect and the pickups have that Hendrix tone ,where as when i played a 70s Strat a real one at Sam Ash Guitar centre in LA on holiday it was terrible , I ended up buying a Squier classic vibe instead , though the 70s Strat was a bargain back in 2012 a real 70s Strat for only £1500 quid but saying that the Pound was worth like double a dollar back then so around $3000 bucks lol
Beautiful guitar and beautiful playing. My very first guitar was an 80's Hondo strat. I hocked it years ago and really regret it now. How is the weight on yours? I remember mine being extremely heavy.
It was probably better than a CBS fender .cos some of them were junk .the Chinese squires from the last couple of years could be better ..I repaired a 1970 for a lad and that thing was a piece of crap the body was great .but the rest was terrible .the pickups sounded thin as hell the F machine heads were worse than any cheap Chinese machine heads for stability I’d ever tried ..somebody had hacked the body out the same ,with a chisel to fit a Dimarzio humbucker in the middle position ,the pots and ceramic cap were still original and still worked fine apart from a bit scratchy but after a good spray with contact cleaner they come right around.I re soldered it all again as most had reallly bad dry joints and big blobs of solder where they had fitted the dimarzio.but the frets were good and the wear was nice on the body and neck .but I’d say a classic vibe would run rings around it ..
So what kinda guitar is it(brand)Dave...strats are my guitar go to ..I play like you many guitar an types but ..I have somthing for natural wood strats..love them..👌👍🤘...this has a real percussive spank in it ..real chimey ...
We'll call you "5 String Simpson" henceforth....😆 Don't worry about the waffle, the story is just as much a part as the music! It's good to see a 40+ year old guitar has so much music in it. When you fixed it up, you freed it's soul to express itself.
