Hi mark I have a hot bin also, watched quite a few people on the set up think I am right about a few things-don’t put leaves in the bottom they will clog the vents in the base-I usually mix my waste in a builder’s large container (like your red one in film) and mix it with top layer with stirring stick -I maybe wrong but hot water bottle inside top layer not poured inside-hope this helps and happy composting

Ahhh I had exactly the same thought about the builders bucket when I saw it there. Was thinking it would be a whole lot easier to mix things up in that first before adding to the bin. Great minds think alike 😁 You, you're absolutely right about the water bottle. I popped out last night and put the full bottle (with contents 😄 this time) in the bin.👍🌻👍

Hi Mark I maybe wrong but I don't think you pour the hot water into the bin I think you leave it in the plastic bottle and lay that on top of your compost if that makes sense. I did the exact same thing as you but after reading the instructions I think I did it wrong.

Oops! Just off to pop the makeshift hot water billet back in 😋

Don't tip the water in! You keep the water in the kickstart bottle. Which to be honest doesn't increase the temp that much. A top layer of grass (not mixed) works better. Only use the run off when it is a dark colour and doesn't smell and make sure you dilute it first. Cover all fruit scraps as the flies will find it very quickly, even the slightest piece! If you're throwing in spent compost make sure it's not wet as you want to keep the mix relatively dry. Fruit, veg and greens will increase the water content so always add more cardboard than you think you might need. As I commented before 'Beanie Composter' RU-vid channel is excellent.

Lesson learnt on the water front. The kickstart bottle is back in the bit all filled up with warm water and this time with the lid on 😄 Thanks for the other tups as well. Next time round should be a lot better. I'll be sure to take a look at the Beanie Composter channel 👍🌻👍

Hi Mark, if you are struggling to find greens for your hot bin, go to Starbucks or Costa and ask for used coffee grounds, then add the coffee grounds in small amounts to the mix, remember it's all about the air flow through the bin to feed the bacteria.

Apart from the twigs at the bottom why not mix everything in a bucket and then tip it in? Surely that would be much easier ?

I've had a hotbox for a few years now and find that the best mix is 50/50 green matter and shredded paper/card. I don't add the partially composted wood chip as I don't find it needs it. I get three to four batches of compost a year. I believe your supposed to put the bottle in full of hot water similar to a hot water bottle - not just add the water

😬 that kickstarter bottle is meant to act like a hot water bottle so keep the water inside 😅 I’d have a little root around and if it’s quite soggy in there I’d maybe start again while it’s early days. A soggy hot bin gets quite smelly very quickly. One thing I learned is to be careful with long strips of shredded paper. They tend to matte together and not properly mix. If you can get hold of a cross cut shredder it’ll serve you much better. Good luck!!!

Oops, best made plans and all that 😂 Just off to pop the hot water bottle back in. Hopefully the mix will be ok. Going to top it up in another day or two and will check on it then 👍👍👍

Looks amazing. I compost in a geobin...it's crazy how much it shrinks.

I’m going to try making a hot-ter bin at my allotment using polystyrene or left over celotex as my husband is a builder. I’ve only ever used just wooden pallets mackled together to make a compost bin which as you can imagine takes along to time for the contents to compost down (over a year). I used the last two bays to fill up 8 raised beds last autumn so all gone now. I’ll follow your method of adding more ingredients though. So I’ll let you know how it goes. Great video x🎉

Great idea to make your own👍👍 Steve’s got a video where he made his own which is worth a watch and I’m sure Niall Gardens has one as well 👍🌱👍

So far so good with the HotBin 👍 It was pretty easy to setup and get going. Will be topping it up this Fri/Sat. Really interested to see just how quickly it’ll make a batch of compost when the weather is so cold 👍🎄👍

Mark very interested to see how long it’s going to take before you have completed compost. My tumbler type compost bins take forever to make compost. Happy Gardening 🧑‍🌾 from Southern California.

Thanks Darry. I'm hoping to have some decent compost in about 3-4 months. I think its meant to work faster than that in the warmer weather but as we head into the depths of Winter here in Scotland I think it'll take a bit longer 👍🌻👍

Ahhh no perennial veg isn't something I've looked too much into but I really should. I like the idea of having things that don't take a whole heap of looking after and keep producing year after year. Just off to Google 👍🌻👍

Hi Mark I’m really interested in hot bins but not not yet invested. The size you have how much compost would I get after how much time feeding it? so if I started now would I fill it for spring and be using the compost on my beds? How much was the hit bin just need to work out wether I can make it productive!

Hi Sharon, I'm hoping to have my first batch of compost from the HotBin in about 3-4 months. As its a 100 litre bin I'm expecting about 70-80 litres of compost if I can keep it fed to the right levels. From my understanding the heat the bin gets to can be impacted by the weather. As we're heading into the depths of Winter here in Scotland it might well take longer to get a batch of compost. However, once we get into Spring and Summer time thing should speed up to around 2-3 months per batch. Link below to the one I got: www.hotbincomposting.com/compost-bins/hotbin-mini.html That's the smallest one the do and there's another couple which are much bigger. I'm very much at the start of my hot composting journey and a few people have recommended watching the Beanie Composter Channel for good insight into the HotBin: www.youtube.com/@BeanieComposter Hope this helps 👍🌻👍
