This is a very good change in fighting sports. A lot of fighters from heavier weight classes have abused the system and their bodies by dehydrating their bodies to the point of critical condition just to make weight in lower weight classes.
Maybe not for professional athletes but when I wrestled in high school we had to perform one and based on that and some body measurements they told us how low they'd let us cut.
This hydration test is an excellent idea. My question is why isn't the UFC doing the same? How many times have we seen UFC fighters fainting at weigh-ins because they have stripped themselves of water to make weight?
I think it's because everyone would have to move weight classes and the transition would be a pain for the organisation, but yes, it seems pretty obvious that the final result would be better.
@@mcdavebob1775 Yeah that's the crux of the problem. Some are more adept at cutting water weight then others. Which means on fight day there could be a significant difference is weight giving one fighter a clear advantage. Some fighters were even doing IV drips post weigh in to rapidly rehydrate. That's getting dangerously close to blood doping catagory IMO
The UFC needs to adopt the “hydration” test along with other safety protocols and stop the fake “ceremonial” weigh-ins! Do it “live” and properly deal with those who cheat or miss weight!
That's crazy they have hydration tests now. When i wrestled... i would run 90 minutes before weigh-ins, just to make weight... and I was already 20% lighter than my normal weight.
@@suyashsingh8814 it wasn't in 90 minutes. My normal weight at the time was 132... I wrestled at 112. The guy who was normally 120, coach had no faith in him to get to 112. The last 90 minutes was just to get rid of the water weight that i could. As far as performance, I was strong AF once i got rehydrated. Long term, I'd probably been a little taller?
They must be able to do a before and after test,knowing how much water,naturally,is in the human body.This stops fighters from cutting to much weight trying to gain an advantage on there opponent.I still can’t wrap my head around how Usman can cut to 170lbs.
I think it’s great that they do this. If you are 225lbs fight 225lb’ers. If you are 5’9 get on weight watchers. Don’t kill yourself trying to get down to child size. They are trying to avoid a Muhammad Benaziza.

Hard for UFC fighters maybe with the ridiculous weight cutting going on there they wouldn't even pass the hydration test. but in One Championship they do not cut weight. It's all natural weight classes.

these days (in the ufc at least) i believe official weigh-ins are done about a week before the fight. the big crowded weigh-ins ufc posts up are specifically called "ceremonial" weigh-ins about a day or so before the fight. i think they do this to let the fighters properly hydrate a week towards the fight instead of giving them only a day
A fighter died because of dehydration and weight cutting some time ago. Since than One FC has banned weight cutting and let's the fighters fight on their natural walking weight. The hydration tests are a big part of that. I don't know how they test that, but yeah probably urine.
