ITV Generic Idents (September 1,1989-October 4,1998) 

I noticed that most regions had the music abruptly stop when the V appeared, but a few (such as Yorkshire and HTV) kept the 'tinkling' going at the end. I think that sounds better in fact!

This was actually my favourite ITV ident. I love the music and graphics. Although LWT was great... but that was because it meant it was the weekend!

Wow those HTV ones look nice and clean, with the extended intros! Almost like they were taken straight from the masters!

I loved what YTV did with the presentation package. The edit which brings the chevron front and centre was brilliant. They actually used the longer version of the music when they opened up for the day after TV-am in the background. There’s a video somewhere on RU-vid where Redvers Kyle opens up for the day and the music plays as Richard Madeley previews This Morning and Mike Scott previews The Time The Place. TV presentation ain’t the same anymore.

ITV at it’s best. The generic logo was legendary, much like the 2 or the multicoloured 4, at a time when millions upon millions would watch TV. They don’t make the same effort now.

I've noticed that the Anglia, Channel, Grampian, Granada, Scottish, TVS, TSW, and Ulster generic idents have a wierd audio defect on phones. As you can see, most of the generic idents are the ones that were not used (excluding Grampian, who never dropped the ident until ITV changed it's logo in 1998 and Scottish, who adopted the ident but dropped it shortly afterwards). This also happens to the main generic ident (the one at the very beginning).

As much as I like this, being of a nostaligic era for me, I'm strangely proud that my region (UTV) never used theirs. Even if they had, it wouldn't have lasted long as a full rebrand was imminent anyway.

The bit in the triangle only showed a fragment of the main logo which looks silly on some, Channel TV for example which looks nothing like a "C" even and Granada looks nothing like a G and the line between the G and the North arrow is missing ? perhaps this is why Granada TV refused to adopt this logo but they did use the ITV logo with the blue triangle on occasion and the nice tune ? Similarly the first YTV logo only showed a tiny bit of the Y hence the CHEEKY second version which is great !! Good old YTV, I too miss the more regional flavour to ITV, if only they had the cameras and HD technology in those days.

Did you know Grampian TV was the only region to use the generic ident for it's full run?

I wish I was old enough to have lived in the UK and seen these idents live.

Each region had one made for them, but not all the regions used theirs, instead opting for their own idents instead.

I know it's a stupid comment nearly 20 years on but wouldn't it have better if they'd started with an itv logo that then morphed into the regional companies logo.

So was LWT first to use their version at 1715 on the Friday? Did other regions wait until the following Monday?

30 years ago this month, ITV launched their Generic Ident. But not all the ITV stations embraced it fully if memory serves me correctly. Thames and LWT were among the few who were happy to be part of the ITV network by using their own take on the generic ident on a regular basis for three years but Anglia, TVS, TSW, Granada, Channel and Ulster were not at all interested and carried on using their own regional on-air identities.

Brilliant

Always found this ident to be a bit business-casual pretentious. Like going out for a meal, in a village on the outskirts of Leeds. An old Mill, tastefully converted into an upmarket restaurant called The Granary. It's a fun place, but not too fun to be seen as un-serious. The sort of Alan Partridge of TV idents.

Despite them being generic, they were iconic. Since the early 2000s Itv has steadily gone downhill.

"Now on HTV and HTV West, it's time for the 1968 film: "All good things... come to an end".

Following TV Franchises told the powers that be to get lost over the generic ident: Anglia, Ulster, Channel, TVS, TSW and Granada used it briefly but decided to have their own ident's instead (TV Ark has the "sky" ident blended with the generic on their site), only Grampian were the ones to keep the ident until 1998! the rest dropped it after a few years and Scottish only used it for 3 months-in other words a "BIG FAT FAILURE" on the marketing department.

Yorkshire is the best imo

By the time they got to Ulster, it was like they couldn't be bothered anymore. How difficult would it have been to incorporate some of the oscilloscope pattern in the V?

TSW's Generic ident was rejected, please add (Rejected) to it

It would be great to see the Generic Idents for ABC, ATV, Rediffusion, Harlech, TWW, Carlton, Meridian, Southern, Westward and Westcountry had they been in existence in 1989.
