It was always going to be a big ask replacing Don Harper's much-loved 'World of Sport March' but it shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone that Jeff Wayne managed it with such aplomb.
We're all sort of adjacent to themes that we grew up with -- yes, those that are older will prefer the theme they grew up with, but - well, I and many others here remember this HUGELY. It's a brilliantly exciting bit of work. It also hugely reminds me of those long lost Saturday afternoons after my brother and I being dragged through various shops and markets and we got back home in the early afternoon, with some pasties and a jam doughnut. And then this started, We listened to the theme, watched some of it for a while when eating our brilliant lunch, and, well, just went up to our bedroom to play some games on the ZX Spectrum.
I don't remember the main theme, but I recall the first few seconds continued to be used to introduce the standalone results programme that came after the demise of WoS, up until maybe '87 or thereabouts. Then again, it's as 80s as hell and big-sounding so I'm all for it.
Thankyou So Much. I specifically play this on a saturday afternoon at 12.15 when it used to come on! Just to give me a lift from the hell hole we are currently in.Of course I was younger then but what a contrast to having been at school all week!
Am I right in remembering that the extended theme was played over a breakdown slide when they had a technical fault? I was still quite young when World of Sport was cancelled so my memory may be playing tricks on me. So glad I found this video. This theme always reminds me of Saturday afternoons with my Dad and his relatives. Happy days.
Always preferred this to the classic theme. Great version. The bit at 3.30 (repeated twice) was used for break stings. I remember in particular as part of FACup final coverage.
Thank you Chris Oakley , Oh how l loved the old world of Sport theme tune and this one as well composed by Jeff Wayne oh i miss the days of the 1980s though of course this show started in 1965. Now with all what Sky has done yes its modern and update but never will be the same as past with World of sport on ITV as well as Grandstand being on BBC one
fantastic! Never heard the full version before. I've been humming the addictive main theme for 30 years. The extra bit in the extended theme was used for ad breaks during the afternoon wrestling slot, if I'm not mistaken. Another tune locked in my head is the ITV theme for the Moscow Olympics coverage in 1980. Been searching for years but still can't find it anywhere.
+Michael Bull I think the Olympics music is used in the LWT trailer here... www.dailymotion.com/video/x31nhe7_lwt-summer-1980-trailer-verity-martindill-in-vision_tv
+Mark Steele OMG!! How on earth did you find that Mark? Thank you so much. First time in 35 years - exactly as I remembered. Don't know if it's by Jeff Wayne, but a classic ITV sports theme. Never used again as far as I know.
If I remember the bit from 3:34 to 3:40 was used for the On The Ball segment during the show. World of Sport brings back memories of my childhood and how awesome weekends were
Jeff wayne is the king of sport themes this is better than the original world of sport theme I also think matador itvs 82 world Cup theme is superb also
I did promise a long time ago to not put it on YT..to the person who gave it to me...but it is the Jeff Wayne version i have. i use it on my radio shows.
At 1:04 and again at 1:20, a voice can just be heard very faintly in the background saying something like "hi, good morning, how are you ... good". I've listen 100 times and am sure I'm not imagining it!
Many thanks for uploading Chris. Will have to look out for the CD. But I have to say that this the second version I have heard. The one I have is very slightly different. Will have to put it up. Perhaps the same as Keefy J?
I think this must have been 1983, as I am reasonably certain the picture of Seve driving on the 17th at Augusta was the year he won the US Masters for the second time
+Chris Oakley Thanks a lot for posting this Chris. Now all these years on horse racing will be returning to ITV, why not bring back World of Sport too, I'm sure Dickie Davies would still be hosting it!
@@phlwlkr hi Phil quite agree with you. I luved World of sport especially the ITV 7 with John Rickman who ust to drop his Trilby hat n welcome every body and John Lawrence too plus brought Scott ' do you remember these two good sports would multi task n ride in some of the jump races and do the paddock and anyislis after .Also liked the speed way n rally cross in the winter. My late dad always dreamed of a mega win on the ITV 7 n football pools but it never came to fruition. Kind regards Glynn n Greetings from Stourbridge West Midlands Sir
Glynn Evans Cheers Glynn. I know we can’t live in the past but in those days EVERY live sporting event was available free to air on either BBC or ITV and I miss that. No more greyhound racing from the likes of Harringay and Wembley which used to form part of the ITV7 during the winter months if the horse racing was abandoned.
@@phlwlkr Your so right Phil .Do you remember Stan Mellor s 1000 winner on Ouzo at Nottingham in Dec 1971 and Red Rum winning the Scottish National in 74 n also the injustice of Proud Tarquin ' got disqualified in the Whitbread gold cup, don't think John Lawrence ever got over it . I know BBC had the cream then but Sandown park on ITV was Fab. We ust to switch channels to get all the races in ..Also do u remember Ken Walton at the end of the Wrestling saying ' Have a good week till next week '..Nice reminiscing with you sir may I ask were r U from London. Kind regards Glynn
Break themes Opening title 0:00 Wrestling 0:56, International Sports Special 2:00, Results 2:26, Racing 2:49, On The Ball/Football 3:30, Closing titles 3:45
Think this tune was brilliant although I did like the original theme as well . Bring bsck world of sport and stop Rupert Murdochs world domination on world sport which we used to get for nothing
