While her previously released tracks/MVs demonstrated her ingenious talent for drama, foresight and will, to me, this song speaks more closely about IU as a sophisticated artist with own hidden thoughts and enigmatic, ambiguous approach for communication - not unlikely how our own thoughts work. BTW, I read from a Korean American's reaction suggesting that this song/MV may be about the different perspectives of a daughter/mother relationship that can be also broadened to describe how older generation of women pass down to the next, much in the spirit of Mobius Strip. As a 60-year-old man, IU also stirred my tear glands with this work. Magnificent work from a true artist who can invoke reflection and imagination.
IU shared a letter that Tang Wei wrote to her after filming talking about her experience, and everything mentioned in the letter makes it very blatant that the relationship in the MV is about a mother and daughter (Tang Wei mentions key memories of her childhood and her relationship with her own mother, for instance). But I will say that the story in the MV is more than just mother-daughter, since there are two sides to the story and that part is only from Tang Wei's POV. IU's POV in the second verse is about a 'friendship'. Theory: In the PAST, She placed those she loved in there (so they can be with her forever) - her mother and her friend. In the PRESENT, she spots IU, who looks very much like her mother, when she was younger. Before seeing IU, she had early spotted someone who looked like her friend, whom she (assumed that she knocked out) placed in the boot. She would have place IU in the boot too except IU boldly approached her first. It can be assumed the woman in the boot will be placed down there too. But IU will be her mother figure in the present and most probably live together, with IU keeping her secret...Shh A dark theme indeed. Love the story line. Want a darker theme: Consider she has been driving around looking out for people that resembles her mother and her friend. If this isn't her first drive, then how many people has she "collected" in there? IU delivers another MV movie!❤ IU has really gone all out for her fans: 4 MVs from 5 songs - 1 Fantasy, 1 Fun, 1 Dark and 1 Apocalyptic. Uniquely IU indeed. Respect much! .👍🏻❤👏👏
This song is about mother daughter relationships. One of the 1st lines she says she hid her mother away. Meaning in her memory, in her heart but that now that she is the age her mother is in her memory she has gone back to the place of her birth with a new prespective of her mother and new understanding. The cycle repeats itself with her daughter as at the end she is the be looking in at her daughter. There are pictures that show IU as a mother with a small girl. Later their is a picture if Tang Wei, who is IU's daughter, and her daughter on the table. Wearingvthe same outfits they are wearing when Tang looks in the car window. There is a sign across the street that says Morbius .and underneath it says a song to a mother and below that it says subconscious. Which is a reference to the mother/daughter relationship that is a never ending generational cycle.
