Wanted to note that I didn't hear the middle harmonies (4ths, 5ths Kevin pointed out at the end) bc turns out my headphones weren't plugged in all the way so the audio was a bit off :(( Also, I know a lot of people were looking forward to this reaction! Sorry for a later posting, Kevin and I were very hesitant to post since we knew fans may be angry with the fact that we didn't pay attention to the lyrics and didn't explain our musical reasoning for why we didn't like the song in enough detail. At the time we recorded this reaction, there were no eng translations available. A day later we both checked the song out again with the lyrics, and even after knowing the deeper message IU was displaying through the song, our opinions towards the musicality of the song did not differ. We feel like this song is for chilling to and enjoying, instead of one made for analyzing and really digging into musically. For those who wanted the main series to react to this song, like all other k-pop songs, we ran this by multiple musicians and everyone agreed this song doesn't have enough to talk about musically (when thinking "have we heard musical choices, rhythms, development, and harmonic landscape done like this before?"). It's a style we've heard done before many times, and yes, we've heard many other songs adventure off harmonically during bridges like this song too. In no way are we saying it's a bad song. We just want to continue to put out excited, educational reactions on the main series. With that being said, IU is one of the artists who shows up the most on this channel. A lot of her past songs are very creative and experimental musically, so you will be seeing more of her. Just not this release.

I dont know why but I never get bored of this song.. like with all of her songs but yk I have it on repeat and its soooo fun to listen to! It was unexpected and it started to sound really really good after the second listen because you start figuring out the rythm and construction more! All in all I was not dissapointed. IU is my favourite artist♡
I think she’s using the usual Kpop sound so that she can get her point across. The more people she can get to listen, the more people can hear the words she’s trying to say.
i don't think it's the usual kpop sound. it has more of an indie sound than kpop and that is because the genre is alternative rnb. if you listen to a both kpop and indie/non-idol artists a lot, you can tell

So I thought about it and thought that to these guys it may sound more pop than most thing IU has done because she wants to reach a wider base with her message of "leave me alone and lemme do my thing."
As Lee JiGeum said, it's more of rnb than mainstream kpop (although kpop is really diverse now). This can actually be considered an UNusual style for her compared to her previous songs, either ballad or pop. But it's IU, everyone listens, everyone loves her, no matter what 😁.
I think the song focuses more on meaning than on musical nuances. I didn't have the lyrics, but somehow I understood what the song was about. This was certainly due to the numerous English terms like hasshtagging, blocking etc.. We see it everywhere, no matter if it's politics, women vs. men or even music. The idealization of Korean singers is only part of the problem. Social media is problematic bc of problematic people. It was foreseeable that the song would not appeal to you too much musically but you should still learn from it -> how to deal with hatred in social media.
I agree. The song seems to be intentionally simple to showcase the message of it. I do agree with this channel's critique of the music though... they are classical musicians after all and they've always focused on the musical elements, etc.
I feel the minimalism in the music is mostly because she wants us to focus on the lyrics and video more than anything. You should check out DKDKTV's analysis of this video since he dives deep into the symbolism of the video as well as the lyrics.
Yes! This one is definitely more about the message than it is, necessarily, about the music. The analysis is very helpful...especially for foreign listeners.
This is one of my favorite songs from IU. The minimalism of the whole thing and that killer bridge just make it for me. The random moments of complete silence and the staccato throughout (except for the bridge, which is contrasting legato) are interesting for me to listen to.
Guess I’m the only one who LOVES this song...like it’s my favorite song from her so far. I like it’s R&B, it’s good she got out of her comfort zone, and she’s been working with hip hop artists recently so it makes sense she would be interested in going this direction. Also the lyrics were super important especially with what IU had to deal with during her Chatsire album.
Exactly!! I know these guys say it isn't musically much but I'm just like fuck musical taste this is my favourite iu song( I probably like it even more than palette) this is just my type of song. I always liked minimalistic songs where the singers voice isnt drowned by of the instruments. Either that or club bangers ( I'm a peasant when it comes to taste but who cares)
I am a fan of IU. I feel you didnt have to apologise at all. The reason why I subscribe yr channel because the honesty that all of you put when discussing abt the musicality in songs. Even I dont get at all abt the techical aspects. But the honesty is something that I always look after from yr video. BBIBBI charm definitely not on the musicality because i do believe that IU wants listeners to focus more on the lyrics & message. The message even straightforward compare to other songs penned by IU. She known for her poety & beautiful lyrics. But BBIBBI really simple; addressing the malicious comments that she got (some of it very common & experiences by any idol). She wrote the lyrics with message that she just normal person who want her privacy & warning others to do not cross the line.
I didn’t like the song at first and then at second listen it just BAAM! became a good song. I know it isn’t musically that great and I would really like her to go back to the sound of modern times also. (My goodness it’s such an amazing album)

This song actually reminds me a lot to Jonghyun's Hashtag, something about the way she is singing even the lyrics, even the aesthetic of the mv reminds to Jjong's vcr of that song!! Is kinda curious, and I love it because I love both Jonghyun and IU ❤
Perhaps she just want to make it simple with this song musical- wise bcoz it's a dish track. It may reaches the intended audiences in K community/netizens. I don't think ordinary people will get the msgs if she used a complex sophisticated music for the issues she raises in this song. Well, in my simple non-musician mind I admire her bravado and versatility in choosing her media to express her feeling. i think this track is minimalistic on purpose to get the point of the lyrics across. if there's anything i learned from my short time as an iu stan, it's that iu does everything with a purpose.
I'm actually a fan of this song, and even though it's a simple song, the meaning of the song and her beautiful vocals are what I love about it. IU still makes great music no matter what she does and doesn't really disappoint but everyone has an opinion :) So I can't argue with people's opinions
For me the highlight of the song is the bassline, it's gorgeous, I love the super low root note, specially in the second part of the chorus, it always gets me

she did have edm with the song "Leon" and hip hop hmmm! maybe with her first full album she did by the way her song in that albus is my favorite although i love all her songs. Don't worry IU's fandom /I mean our fandom "Ueana" means you and I or her name also mean the same IU is the most calm fandom. Since mostly her fans are professionals like me and mature and usually her fans stick to her for a long time like me a fan for 9 yrs already. She is the only kpop singer i love and approved until 2014. you should also listen to her covers singing the song live in radio and other shows. She is the nicest and the most genuine celebrity i know not because of her good works but you can see it in her eyes. Her fandom is peaceful and respect each other as we want to be like IU who accept criticism in a good way. So don't worry you can say your opinion without being afraid that you will get bash if ever some of her fans will then that means they are new in this fandom. She never fail to surprise me every time. I always thought that i already saw everything she can do but the answer is no she still have a lot to showcase. thank you for your support.

This is a style she's been wanting to do for a while and im glad shes doing it. It's not a complicated song or super interesting musically but its still a bop. I'm looking forward to future tracks.
I had the same reaction as you guys on my first listen but I quickly got addicted to it after that because there are certain lines of the lyrics and parts of the music video that are really addicting once I got used to the song.
To be fair, this song is a special release for her 10th anniversary in the industry and she just wanted to convey a very deep and powerful message. Not much musical nuances are present but the lyrics and symbolisms are strong whether it be direct or an undertone. To reach out her message to a wider audience, she needs a musical style appreciated by most that strays from her usual classical to musical genre. Also, this is the style perfect for her message overall because of the punchiness and dynamics. I guess for future reactions we should also consider if the musical style fits with the overall concept and message instead of blindly focusing solely on the musical style and mixing itself and this song is a perfect example why.

This song is actually just because of its imagery and its lyrics meaning. Its like a soft diss track to haters and toxic netz. Watch the video where a korean explained about this song. The meaning behind is actually what makes i like it why people love the iu. Ofc, for a vocal coach it doesnt matter but its a big impact in the music industry
Idk if anyone will know what I’m talking about, but this song really reminded me of a song called Crush by tessa violet (mostly/especially the chorus) ! Kinda minimalist synth-y piano-y instrumental and the chorus is just v similar !! Love both songs and both artists but had to comment about the similarities somewhere :p

At first I didn't like this song either, it is just that IU never done something like this track and I was expecting some R&B or Ballad, which is something I LOVE about her. Everything matches with her, even the album Modern Times. I am a Uaena and I love her so much :)) but I'm not a big fan of this music, I like it but it's not the best of hers.
