Yeah, it's a shame that Coach Mackey was struggling with drug addiction during this time. He was an excellent coach and his team played hard for him and bought into the system. The team could have been very good for many yrs with great recruiting yr after yr if coach hadn't gotten fired. The team really hasn't been the same since in my opinion. it's too bad that Mackey couldn't have just gotten suspended and perhaps forced to go to counseling. I know he was found in a crack house but that's part of the addiction in some cases. In today's society he would have gotten a second chance with the team. Hope he is now doing well.
Kevin Mackey was on the verge of making CSU a very special city university just the way Ray Meyer did with DePaul and Lou Carnesseca did with St. John's. It's too bad he had a chemical dependency because he was a player's coach who knew how to motivate and could FLAT-OUT X&O! Happy 37 year anniversary Vikings!
