The main purpose of the IUCN Red List is to provide information on the conservation status of species and to guide conservation efforts. The Red List uses a set of criteria and categories to classify species into different levels of extinction risk. These categories include:
Extinct (EX): Species that no longer exist.
Extinct in the Wild (EW): Species that survive only in captivity or cultivation, with no known populations remaining in the wild.
Critically Endangered (CR): Species facing an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild.
Endangered (EN): Species facing a very high risk of extinction in the wild.
Vulnerable (VU): Species facing a high risk of extinction in the wild.
Near Threatened (NT): Species that are close to qualifying for a threatened category but do not currently meet the criteria.
Least Concern (LC): Species that are widespread and abundant, with a low risk of extinction.
In addition to these categories, the Red List also includes data deficient species (DD) for which there is insufficient information to assess their conservation status, and not evaluated (NE) species that have not yet been assessed.
