In July 2021, me and my mom went to Lapland with a plan to paddle the Ivalojoki River from Ivalon-Matti to the center of Ivalo. The distance between this is about 120 kilometers. The beginning from Ivalon Matti to Kuttura is mostly backwaters with small rapids and the terrain around the river is smoother. Beautiful wilderness and great leg though. After Kuttura, the nature of the river changes a lot and the streams begin to grow into rapids as the terrain forms also steepen.
So let's go!
The summer had also been warm in Lapland, as a result of which the water level on the river was quite low and the flow at the start of the trip was only 40m³ / s. In times of shallow water, the waves of the rapids shrinks, but the exposed rocks bring their own challenge to finding the lines.
However, as a result of one rainy day, the flow in the river increased somewhat and the paddling of the river became a little faster.
The Ivalojoki River offers paddlers great nature experiences, varied kayaking in the wilderness and a history of gold panning.
