I saw him in a small theatre over 40 years ago now, walking up and down the aisles signing autographs and records that people held up for him ( I regretted not bringing mine). In that show he described how lowly paid men with a rope over their shoulders would haul a barge along the canal, through the mists in the very early morning. He began softly with the high notes gradually becoming robust and louder (as the boatmen drew closer) and then reversing the voice, becoming softer as the boatmen receded away.

Saw him perform twice in Hamilton Ontario Canada. My wife chatted with him (in German) She has since passed away. Thank you for the Wonderfull memory. He was a great Singer will be Missed.

Had a program on Sunday mornings on (Canadian) CBC radio when I was a kid late 50's early 60's with his own choir. Very enjoyable even if you weren't from that culture. The more you listen, the more you learn about all music.

Freddie Mercury had an amazing natural talent, but most people don't stand a chance of hitting the lowest notes that Mr. Rebroff managed to belt out. Both were excellent, yet completely different singers.

It made no difference, but I felt deflated when I discovered his nationality was German. I wanted him to be Russian. But nothing changes his fabulous voice. People should live forever and not leave.

Actually Hans Rolf Rippert to use his real name is a german. Also even here in germany many believed him to be either a Russian or a 'Spätaussiedler", the russian born descendent of german settlers to Russia from the 17th/18th century. Hearing this, my mind can't help but imagine the crossing of the Volga and the fighting to retake Stalingrad. The fear, the pride, the hardships that they faced. From an American, I'd like to thank the Russian men and women who fought, especially the ones who gave their lives fighting the Germans. Much respect.
