Ivan Sirko is one of the most legendary and beloved historical figures of the Cossack era, perhaps the brightest personality after the death of Bohdan Khmelnytskyi. This, in particular, is evidenced by a large number of legends, historical thoughts and songs that arose during the life of the chieftain and have survived to this day - in particular, the story about the letter from the Zaporozhian people to the Turkish sultan, whose writing was allegedly initiated by Ivan Sirko.
During his lifetime, Sirko gained such great fame among the Cossacks that for the past 8 years, the Cossacks elected him as the Cossack chieftain every year, something that had never happened in Zaporozhye since ancient times. In total, Sirko was basket captain 15 times. At the end of his life, he had such an influence on the Zaporozhians that during all kinds of disputes and riots on Sich, which were sometimes raised by the youth, it was enough for him to go out into the square and say to the crowd: "Listen, children, to me, the old man, and do as I I say..." - and the Zaporizhia immediately calmed down and obeyed the old Kosovan.
