Ivar was the show after Ragnar so they were never gonna just kill him off, not until the show ends I assumed that. Yes he killed Sigurd, but by accident. Bjorn and Ivar was during a war so I think he deserved a pass, they both chose a side, their mothers, so cant blame either of them, plus Bjorn then came and took Kattegat from Ivar. Both Lagertha, Bjorn and Ivar attacked kattegat to get their home back so why does Ivar only deserve to be killed for that. And no he didnt come home after Lagertha died, because he was usurped, wanted his home back and also wanted to help Igor be safe and free too. If Ivar deserved to die and got away with stuff then so did most in the show Including Lagertha, Bjorn, Harald etc. Those soldiers doing exactly as Ivar did was a way of showing us that Ivar lives within all of them I believe. And I think Ivars illness was getting the best of him, hence why he chose to go out in battle instead. I think the seers prophecy about his death was about his illnesses since it would happen wherever he goes and whether he know or not it happens.
Ivar was playing a game of chess. hat last battle was him throwing the game to save his brother. He drew all the attention to his king(him) and sacrificed himself to a pawn in order to end the battle and save his brother. he knew alfred was playing hence why he ended the battle once ivar dropped. Him controlling his people like a god is him getting his "pieces" where he wants them(his playing a game of chess) "i played chess with King alfred, this time i want to do it on the battle field". In the end his brother did kill him just not the way he expected. ivar chose to die hence his dads famous last words, thats why he just stood there and took it.
I didn't feel like Ivar had plot armor if anyone had plot amor it was definetly Lagertha and Bjorn like those guys just woudn't die. When I first watched Ivar's death I was a little disappointed until I continuously watched it and then in the end I liked it. This show has a habit of taking 'unworthy' characters to kill the big characters. King Aelle for Ragnar, definetly what viewers wanted for Ragnar's death, Hvisterk for Lagertha, Bjorn said he was unworthy not me I love Hvisterk but it wasn't what viewers were expecting, Bjorn technically was killed by a Rus Commander/General (which I still call bullshit that he lived that long) awesome scene but not what viewers to my knowledge expected and then Ivar killed by a random soldier, I liked this because it's 1. a running theme in Vikings but like all main Wessex people are dead so it would have had to be Alfred or Hvisterk if they wanted a main character to kill him and I don't think either would have been able to do it, personally if they had kept Heahmund alive just to kill Ivar or like someone would have tried to kill Hvisterk and Ivar got in the way that would have been cool. My only real complaint is like we know Ivar and Ubbe obviously dont' get along but it wuld have been nice if he acknowledged his brothers death just saying
I love the fact that big names are killed by unworthy people, of they are killed by worthy people that means they lost, but they die as super heroes bc no one was superior to them not even on their own death
But you could tell that the puny soldier was going to play a ‘ big role ‘ when the camera panned on his face the first time he appears on the screen , it shows that he his terrified by being in the battlefield and we get several slow mo’s of him before even meeting Ivar , so the build up of his fear before confronting Ivar plays into the idea of how insignificant of a rival he was
I mean, a lot of characters had plot armor. I always figured it was almost like their fate, the will of the gods because the gods do exist in the context of the show it seems.
Your criticisms of the final seasons are well-reasoned. I disagree with much of it for season five. But with six, you've been on-target almost every time. IMO the problem with those last two is that they set the bar so high with 1-4. Anything less than superlative was an automatic letdown. We weren't expecting good to mediocre TV for season five.
