he is still handsome and has good manner in his sixty.he has lived a disciplined life .he is like a masterpiece.a man deserving respect. i admire him not just his piano artistry
I think Ivo has always OWNED this piece. He got its meaning, which is not a flashy virtuoso piece. Is a majestic and also melancholic legacy that the composer got from his beloved country, Russia. As such, its meaning raises above piano pyrotechnics. I think Ivo has always known that, and you can tell that, from this and many performances of this work 👏🏻👏🏻.
The high standard that guards the worlds best musician is rather unforgiving sometimes, and pogorelich is one genius who didn’t comply with the rules. His refreshing interpretations is a shock to many people. I’m so sad that he’s in this state now after the death of his wife. It annoys me when people criticise him of using sheet music. Ignoring the fact that memorised repertoire only became a thing because of Liszt. A musicians capabilities shouldn’t be criticised even if they choose to use sheet music. Bravo pogorelich
Whilst Liszt is my favorite composer for piano I dislike the fact he caused this memorised repertoire thing ... if you don't have to focus on remembering something flawlessly you can do much more with the music in terms of interpretation which Pogorelich is showing time and again. Richter also mostly played from sheet and he is also considered one of the all time greats.
I got a chuckle out of how Mr. Pogorelich pushed the bench out of the way with his foot just before he bowed at the end. With all his seriousness, this man's eccentric humor is a delight.
If you cannot bear witness to the genius at work in this man, you know not of the power of Music to transcend the trials and tribulations of a life that has known heartache unlike most, and brought to stricken mind a measure of divine healing. Pogorelich is one of the greatest musicians of our time. Even at his most idiosyncratic of moments, he resonates Truth and Beauty because his is a soul steeped within the moment of its own being, whilst ever being at the mercy of the moment. I have learned more about the varying sonorities of but one note from his musical mind, than I have from any pianist of the 20th century and present day. He resonates such worth, however wayward the extremes. He is to the world of piano what Rudolf Nureyev was to ballet. A necessity that sees his art form survive through simply being who he is. I love him!
What an incredible execution. The sound is so full, round; themes, inner voices, armonies are well expressed; the emotional charge is great. What does it matter if there is a slower tempo or there are few wrong notes? Fantastic.
I knew M. Pogorelich well when he lived in London in the late 80's and 90's. I went to many of his concerts with him and witnessed possibly the most brilliant pianism I've ever seen (the Carnegie Hall 1990 and 1992 examples stand out as utter perfection where one was pushed back into the seat by the sheer power). These videos do him no justice at all. In this one he can certainly still play all the notes well, but the musicality and thread is nowhere to be seen. Compare this to the 1992 Carnegie Hall video and it is quite appalling. People are going to see him for the spectacle of a pianist who is a shadow of his former self rather than a complete artist now
Still running rings around many a renowned artist, though. Always worth listening to. Don’t be so negative. Look at the comments. The communication with the listener is absolutely front and centre. That’s the point of performance.
@@Maisiewuppp I wasn't being negative - I was telling the truth. He simply cannot play well anymore. He has totally gone off the rails - he himself said that when he saw Horowitz perform in Japan, it was like a beautiful vase that had unfortunately cracked in many places. That is now what he is like. I have no wish to go and see Ivo play now - I will cherish my memories of the many times I saw him when he could play well - probably better than anyone I ever saw (and I saw Horowitz, Richter, Gilels, Argerich and many more)
Fcuk me…insane, messy yet genial…hate and love the performance at the same time. He has such an incredible power and charisma, he is a rockstar indeed!
Yes, gentlemen, the imbecile judges and jury members of the competitions where this singular genius was rejected, yes, gentlemen, the hateful and jealous critics, yes, gentlemen, the narrow-minded purists who say that music is like that and not like that.. All those who have much maligned M Pogorelitch this artist who suffered so much in his personal life know that the ovations and the love of the public certainly erase a lot your stupidity and can a little the blows of fate suffered by this man with such a generous heart
@@HermanIngram Maybe you can't understand he's music? When we listen to Ivo Pogorelich we do not listen to Chopin, Mozart, Ravel or Liszt... We listen IVO POGORELICH and THAT is a fantastic thing! If you booed him you don't need to be happy or anything else, remember this: you booed to an artist. Greetings from Italy! (Ps. Ci manchi, Maestro...)
Man it looks so easy for him,too easy for him. What can I say,and he seems improvising and revising it on stage as if he had played it years ago and is coming back to it.
That's exactly what it is. He played it years ago and is coming back to it. Now he is rediscovering the piece all over again. He is a different man than he was when he was young, so this piece sounds completely different now than it used to. It's like Glenn Gould playing two extremely different versions of Goldberg variations.
You should listen to his rendition of the same piece from 27 years ago; go and check "Ivo Pogorelich ..Recital in Carnegie Hall ..May, 7 ..1990 .." starting from 1:25:00. I personally like it much better than this one, plus the sound was professionally recorded unlike this one. That was purely ingenious and probably the best ever interpretation of this piece. Youthfully fresh and perfectly executed. One and only Mr Pogorelich.
@@HermanIngram How do you know that it's easy? Is that what YOU do? The truth of the matter is that many big-name pianists avoid this work because of its diffiulty.
he is just intriguing... occasionally, rumbling tone and profound colour, the next moment a crumbling mess. but somehow the finale still blows my head off. he seems to hit you when it matters. he's not what he was in 1990 playing this piece but my god he is still unique
His playing is very idiosyncratic...but it seems less so compared to some performances from previous years. I really enjoyed this performance. Some of his tonal control and phrasing in the quieter sections is really remarkable.
Typically idiosyncratic in the Ivo way. Mixture of great lightness with pounding (which maybe works for this piece). Extraordinary phrasing in the slow section. Even by professional pianists standards, his hands seem huge with very strong fingers.
Pogo hands are giant, strong and slender, a miracle. This performance may seem strange to those who blast through Islamey to beat the fastest time... But this is one of the most musical Islameys out there, by a (very) long way. Pogorelich played it ultrafast in his twenties. For sure. But this is more spacious, breathable; slow overall but not so slow in the toccata sections, unquestionable musicality and a granite determination.
Funny, his 1988 Carnegie Hall recording (which evinces the virtuosity of the pianist) has much higher popularity than this, which evinces the beauty of the music. I guess being wowed is easier than falling in love. 10% thumbs down, humans fascinate me!
I have heard many, many renditions of this piece, but this is by far the best...not even his own rendition from 1990 at Carnegie Hall can match this...in fact, not even close. Can anyone suggest another that may be as sublime as this?
pogorelich has always been a much discussed pianist, since his first performances which, apart from certain Scarlatti, Bach and Beethoven 111, revealed objective limits of understanding of the text. Today with these performances of virtuosic and tiring pieces, the undoubted technical and physical resources of the time having ceased, the said hidden limits appear in all their evidence behind an alleged softer and more lyrical but also very presumptuous reinterpretation ... in fact the audience applauds and we'll have to get over it
And so what if he reads from the score. Will you upvote if he balances a ball on his nose? You want a circus? A Guitar Hero? srsly, close your eyes and realign.
Why always, it seems, at least for recent performances, that the sound is always so bad? Pogorelich performances are always poorly presented. Surely such a great performer deserves better.
