More about Gianmarco:
Gianmarco Soresi is a stand-up comedian, actor, and a little too much for some people. He’s told jokes on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Comedy Central, Netflix’s Bonding, Don’t Tell, The Real Housewives of New York for some reason, and he was a JFL New Face in 2022. He’s acted in Billy Crystal’s Here Today, Hustlers, The Last OG, and in his theater days shared the stage with some people who’ve gone on to become huge real estate agents. You can see him post the kind of crowdwork clips that are arguably destroying the artform of stand-up comedy everywhere @gianmarcosoresi and he obviously has a podcast called The Downside with Gianmarco Soresi.🎤

@GianmarcoSoresi I thought, for sure, Gianmarco was going to say, when he talked about being on the train, about "waiting for the other shoe to drop" to call back to Dan's original reaction. Would have been nice to see his reaction. I do have two things in common with Dan (the kind of college I went to, and what I majored in), but no watch software from me.

@@Irgendwas12348rkwkwlw Hebrew and Arabic share a lot of similarities because they are both Semitic languages that developed in the same region, so there likely is an etymological link. Funnily enough, the reason why it was not immediately legible to Gianmarco as a Jewish name is that most Jews in North America, and particularly in the Northeast, are Ashkenazi with roots in Eastern Europe, so the names which are legible as ‘Jewish names’ are usually Yiddish or Eastern European in origin. Having a Hebrew surname suggests that the audience member likely has Mizrahi roots, which are the Jews from the Middle East and North Africa.

I love that America likes to make museums memorializing victims of genocides they didn't perpetrate. I imagine that's because a room full of shoes and a replica boxcar are more visually interesting than a patch of barren dirt accompanied by the entire text of the Indian Removal Act of 1830. Edit: Y'all it's a joke on a comedy video you don't need to be getting fighty in the replies
@bazbuco
@bazbuco 5 месяцев назад
America has that museum because it’s the only country other than Israel with a substantial Jewish population, including Holocaust survivors and their descendants. And there’s motivation from the Jewish community to make sure newer generations aware that it happened so in their ignorance and political gullibility, they don’t decide to conduct another one. But yeah obviously the US doesn’t own up to its own genocides-but that’s par-the-course for everyone. The Japanese don’t have museums about the rape of Nanking. Arabs don’t have museums about the colonization and Islamization of MENA. The Turks don’t have a museum for the Armenian genocide, etc.
@apollofell3925
@apollofell3925 5 месяцев назад
@@bazbuco I hear you, 100%. But in the broader cultural context, US culture LOVES to pat itself on the back for WW2, which involves bringing up how bad it was the nazis tried to do a genocide, while politely hiding its bloodied hands behind its back. I understand why Jews want to preserve the history and I wholeheartedly believe they should. But I also will never be able to see that history referenced with sincere solemnity and horror, while hushing the blood that weeps from the soil beneath my feet. I'm fine with us remembering the holocaust, I just wish we'd remember the trail of tears a little more often.
@emmelinesprig489

From the sounds of it I'm guessing he works for Garmin, or possibly one of their competitors like Wahoo. Not sure where this is recorded, but Garmin is headquartered in Kansas City and Wahoo in Atlanta. Their products would probably technically qualify as "smart watches", but that's not usually how they're described by the target audience, and so probably not the way it's described by the software engineers either. Sports watches or running watches is the normal term. You might hear "multisport watches" for ones aimed more at triathletes or people doing other sports. To be honest, it was really hard to watch Gianmarco just not get it. Not even understanding what Dan was saying even as Dan kept trying different angles to explain it meant that Gianmarco just wasn't able to riff on it to make a funny joke.

The Holocaust Museum has an exhibit of 4000 shoes taken from concentration camp victims at Majdanek. At the holocaust memorial in Germany they have a display to show the destruction of the holocaust. When people were killed in the gas chambers, or taken away, things like clothes, personal items, etc were taken from them. One of the displays to show this is a massive amount of shoes that belong to all the different victims- it’s a massive display of them, each pair representing another victim killed. So by saying “they only had one shoe” it’s just a bit of a dark joke saying how the holocaust museum in the south has everything much smaller and less significant than ones in Germany

There’s a permanent exhibit of 4000 shoes taken from concentration camp victims at the US Holocaust Memorial, on loan from the Polish government. It’s one of the exhibits that people remember the most because it’s very poignant to see, for example, children’s shoes and babies shoes alongside shoes that clearly belonged to adults.

The Auschewitz Concentration Camp Memorial has a giant pile of shoes, suitcases and other things that were left behind when Jews were put on trains to be sent to the camp. These Jews were mostly families being told this was the safe alternative to staying where they lived ( bc they would be killed if they didn't leave) but actually they were being shipped the the infamous gas chambers to be murdered en mass. Every shoe belonged to a real man woman or child. The pile is so large that to witness it is an emotional revelation of holocaust. They have just a giant pile of all the shoes of the children which is stomach churning. From there you may get a sense of what a memorial of just one shoe might evoke. I take this to mean that there are not Jews in this state like at all, or that it's typical of racists to downplay racism. It's a very sad joke, about how we, as a society have learned nothing.
@MaraMara89
@MaraMara89 5 месяцев назад
@@Skootfairyone small correction: those things weren't left behind BEFORE /where people was put in the trains - that way it would be stolen and never seen again. Those are shoes (and other belongings) that people took with them (because as you have written they thought they are going to live in new place. There are 110 000 shoes in Auschwitz (and 8 000 of them are kids ones) ... and it is only from 5% of people killed there - 1,1 mln

@@pixelsthered I didn't knew about that... Most people guess that Gianmarco had DC Holocaust Memorial in mind , where they have 4000 shoes of Holocaust victims (borrowed from Lublin, Poland) - didn't knew about that before reading comments. I thought he have thought about former concentration camps in Europe, where you can see thousands of shoes on display (and other everyday items like toys, glasses, hairbrushes or even crutches and leg prothesis...I was in Auschwitz on middle school trip and I still remember them vividly... (Almost 15 years later)

When the allies liberated the concentration camps they found mass piles of shoes from victims who were told to undress before being killed. Some Holocaust museums like the one in DC include some to represent how incomprehensible the number of individuals who were murdered is and to show our shared humanity in that we all wear shoes. I also recommend looking up shoes on the Danube River. They had warehouses with piles of glasses, hair, clothes, suitcases, jewelry, any and everything they could steal and use to dehumanize. They removed gold teeth crowns too.
