Meet the brains behind the new Disney series set in a sci-fi Nigeria, that has a certain 'Wakanda' feel.
A 2018 BBC interview propelled the pan-African creative team of @Kugalimedia into a collaboration with Disney.
The result? “Iwájú,” a six-episode animated series set a Lagos of the future.
As the series premieres, the filmmakers share their journey, the challenges of bridging tradition and progress, and the potential of “Iwájú” to empower African voices and bring about global understanding.

I'm impressed. I was doing animation for over a decade but i stopped for another thing. Doing animation in Africa is hard; i admire the perseverance of these Nigerians. I wash them the best.

Great! Now that we have your attention, as a Nigerian just want to tell you it's okay to focus on more positive, PROGRESSIVE, stories about Africa. You'll get even more engagement. That way you can start to balance the countless negative, poverty, corruption, fraud stories you have focused on since this channel premiered. For each TB Joshua story, you can profile how Nigeria built one of Africa's strongest banking systems in under 15 years. Or Nigeria's amazing progressive contemporary art scene (happy to share leads), the Igbo apprentice system, or major tech movements in Nigeria, Kenya, SA and elsewhere. And on and on.

Not a fan of Disney and will never be a fan. So I don’t know what to make of this as an African. I’m also disappointed that they are not speaking in an African language and then adding subtitles for people to understand. That would have been impressive. At the end of the day, there’s nothing special about making any movie in English, lots of cultures do it. Would have loved to hear an African language promoted or the global world.

Our show has a lot of Yoruba and pidgin English, as well as regular English, because the story is set in Lagos and that is how Lagosians speak. Are you disappointed that we made the characters speak how we actually speak in Lagos?
