In today's video I perform a watch service and light restoration to this IWC Pocket Watch from the 1920's. I change the crystal, clean the pivots, clean the dial and clean the jewels. I also show and explain the Geneva Stopwork on the Mainspring Barrel.
If you would like to learn more about the Geneva Stopwork please check out this great video linked below.

Nice work! Thanks for sharing! I have a similar channel! It's really helpful to other hobbyist watchmakers learning the craft (like myself) to have all of the information that you're sharing! I've been wondering if I can buy just one spring barrel loading tool. That or a staking tool is probably my next purchase.

Thanks so much for the comment. I was watching your camera set up video and I am so jealous!! You've really got it all worked out. The color on your video is so consistent between cameras! My camera's shift color all the time and it's a huge pain in the rear to color correct during editing. Any suggestions?

@@watchasilearn Thanks! I use (mostly) all the same cameras (Sony RX100 M5) all set manually to daylight color balance, and for the microscope or other cameras (iPhone, other Sony cameras) I correct in Davinci Resolve (which I also use for editing).

Hey Dayton, you can buy individual bergeon mainspring winders, arbors and handle. Look at cousinsuk for price and availability.

For silver, soak it in baking soda, ad some alu foil to the bath, and hot water. The baking soda fuses with the Sulphur that made the silver turn black, well google it :) test it on an old silver tea spoon..

Hey thanks for that info. I've got a watch coming up in the future that I will definitely use that technique on. Also, thanks for watching and for the GREAT comment!!

Very enjoyable video, thank you Mark, you did a beautiful job. I'm a beginner at watchmaking, about 15 months in. I'd just like to add that the little black mainspring barrel closer that you use? I have one too, and it NEVER works for me. I have yet to press on the top of the thing, and get that satisfying little snap that tells you the barrel lid is properly seated. What's the trick?
@watchasilearn
@watchasilearn 4 месяца назад
Hi Garry, thanks for watching. Yes, it is a little hard to get it lined up just right. The trick is getting it to apply pressure evenly across the surface of the top of the barrel. If it's not just right it won't work. Hope this helps!!

Hello Thank you for an informative video 😊 I just purchased a marriage watch with this movement.. Now I am worried that it might be too fragile for every day wear? What would you advise?
@watchasilearn
@watchasilearn 10 месяцев назад
Hi George, thanks for watching and for the comment. These movements have been in watches for a long time....I think that as long as you have it serviced regularly there is no reason not to wear it. I would, however, be very careful not to expose the watch to much moisture or dirt, unless you are sure the case is water tight. Vibrations can also affect a watch movement. Just wear your Timex when you're out doing lawn work, riding your motorcycle, or going to the beach. Enjoy your watch and wear it in good health!!

@@watchasilearn Hi thanks for your reply, yes I'll wear it with care but stop worrying too much.. I think I've been reading too many forum pages and worrying about nothing

Hi Mark, I'm about to purchase a L+R cleaning machine. I noticed your L+R cleaning jars have lids that fit snugly in the opening. I'm looking for something like this as the black l&r jar lids that come with it don't fit tightly enough and I'm afraid will lead to evaporation of the solution. Where did you get those wooden lids? Thank you for your great videos!
@watchasilearn
@watchasilearn 2 года назад
Yes, they work great. I got them at Hobby Lobby, I believe they are bamboo and have a rubber seal. They come as a set with some class canisters but I think they were only $4 a piece or so. Thanks for watching and your comments!
@jimmykao3355
@jimmykao3355 2 года назад
@@watchasilearn Mark, so you replaced the original L+R jars with 3 new ones from hobby lobby? Did you experience evaporation with the original jars?
@watchasilearn
@watchasilearn 2 года назад
@@jimmykao3355 No, I didn't replace the jars, only the lids because the original black ones didn't fit tightly enough. I use the jars for cotton balls and Qtips in the bathroom. :)

Pretty terrible application of Moebius 9415 to the escapment, you got oil on the pallets sure, but you made a mess. Did you use 9010 for the all of the jewels of the gear train? I hope not. I hope in the future you're able to invest in a Watch Timing machine, it's all about timing. No point in having a watch run if it isn't running optimally.

American watches and watchmaking is far superior to swiss watchmaking. In fact, America / Waltham Watch Co taught the Swiss the art and science of watchmaking.
