Izotope Neutron 3 | Fooling the Track Enhance A.I.

I came up with a test to see how intelligent Izotopes AI features really are. The results were really surprisingly... dumb.
For this test I was recording my Marshall JVM and processed the raw guitar Track using Izotope Neutrons Track Enhancement AI. This feature listens to your track and suggests various EQ, Compression and Exciter settings. So I was asking myself: What happens, when you analyze this processed recording once more? If the AI really listens to your frequency, it should not apply the same settings twice. Surprisingly it did the same processing over and over again, up to a point the guitar track sounds unbearable.

I experience the same behavior which is disappointing.

Hi Ron, thanks for the comment! Yeah I was not expecting this as well. The only thing I can imagine is the sculptor on the second iteration is squeezing the frequencies back into "normal guitars" and then neutron starts optimizing again... But still not what I expect from a tool this expensive

i made a similar test, first i used the Neutron 3 track enhance on a guitar, and it boosted some lower mids at about 150hz, then i removed Neutron and boosted with an Eq the 150Hz extremely, about 10db or so, then i opened Neutron after the EQ and used track enhance again, and it boosted the 150 hz again, so i also thought it doesn't really "listen"...now you can say it is just ment to give you a good starting point, but how can it be a good starting point when it doesn't really listen😁 and when it boosts obviously already extreme outstanding frequencies...?

As an experiment why don't you set up a great balanced guitar sound then sabotage that sound by boosting a frequency and or lowering another frequency and then test to see if the AI picks those changes.

That's a good idea - let me try this today or tomorrow. But I guess the sculptor in the beginning of the signal chain always squeezes the guitar in place and then applies the basic processing. Don't get me wrong, I love to work with izotope products, but as a programmer I feel like izotope is just abusing the ai-hype to sell their products... Thanks for the suggestion!

@@TobiasJust I saw another video of someone demonstrating the track assistant on a guitar track, guess what, the EQ had a very similar look to the EQ on your demonstration.

Ah that's good to know! I thought about this yesterday and had a good read in the documentation of Neutron. I guess the sculptor module inside neutron squeezes your signal to sound somewhat like "perfectly mixed guitars" - or whatever instrument you select. Izotope must have analyzed a lot of different instrumentes in a very well mixed state. With the sculptor settings you can change how agressively your recorded signal is transformed into the "ideal" signal. And then the EQ tries to find resonance frequencies that you usually want to keep out of the mix automatically. I still like this concept, but can't spot the real artificial intelligence here...

@@TobiasJust what do you mean? the fact that it's analyzing something and making decisions IS artificial intelligence. i've never heard them advertise it as something that's supposed to figure out the exact genre and vibe that you're going for and make it as close to that as possible. it's just supposed to give you a good starting point. though i'm not saying it should've done what it did in your video, that's obviously ridiculous, hopefully they fix that in a patch or the next full version.

The biggest misconception about Neutron is that it will intelligently mix your tracks. It doesn’t. Any mix engineer will tell you NOT to mix your track in solo, which is basically what Neutron does. The AI will give you a starting point but won’t take into consideration how your guitar will sound next to the snare or synth.
