Izotope is amazing. It seriously has helped out those who are learning or are 100% independent.

That's a great point, this tool isn't meant to replace audio engineers and producers. It's created for the independent content creators who doesn't have the time to do it all by himself nor the budget to hire someone else.
@@MichaelsMadOfficial I find it lazy. If you want to do something well, find the best designed and best sounding tools and put in the time. Neutron is ok. EQ sounds a bit plasticky.

I’m surprised you would say the EQ sounds that way, especially seeing that you don’t have anything on your RU-vid page showing you doing any mixing. I would love to know more about your amazing mixes that you do so I can learn...
id love to hear a plugin demo for a change that didn't use rap/hip hop music. id love to hear how the first (6 slider mix) would do with fat mess of drum and guitar tracks that are raw and live. i suspect it wouldn't do near as well which is why they used these pre-processed sounds that are already perfect.
I agree, it would have been useful to demo a musical product using music instead of Robotic sampled beats and sterile vocals now pretending to be music
The "Sculpture" feature is really good. It's like the Gullfoss plug-in from Sound Theory and it does a great job of "sculpturing" your sound before processing further. Love it!
Legit. I've been having such a hard time mixing and master for Ableton, but this just makes it so much easier, and soothing where I don't have to always sigh and keep messing around lol
It's not clear whether they understand the psychoacoustics of masking. A sound at a 'single' frequency masks frequencies around it upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d9/Maskingpatterns_sp11.jpg Masking curves have a specific shape and lower frequencies mask a larger range than higher ones, particularly once you get over 4K Hz. Then you have the fact that a complex wave form is heard as such. You don't always need or want to hear each individual sound. I think today's counterpart to the 'loudness wars' is the 'clarity wars'. Some EDM is very successful in producing extreme clarity. And it sounds as plastic as crap. I'd like to have these tools, but I also think you can never overcome poor selection of instruments to put together in the different ranges.
I love unclear records. Whole point of 'wall of sound' in the 60s,they produce excitement and some sense of wonder when you are thinking 'what instrument combo is that??'. The trick maybe is don't separate everything, in fact blend stuff too. Treating Masking is reliant on an aim. To cut through the mix? To make a certain range of an instrument heard that is covered up? (like a piano might cut through but the' warmth' or low notes may not cut through) To give a sense of space? If a frequency range is problematic, you may even want it covered up...
Interesting comment. I agree there seems to be some issues with over refinement of sound. I think It would be similar to reserving space on a canvas for each particular color and its hues. Sure you have a painting and it's very clear what every color is, but is it interesting? That doesn't excuse sloppiness or muddiness, but I like some gravy from my potatoes spilling over onto my stuffing and cranberries.
So they route everything through an interface which renames things like EQ, compression, attack etc to things like Tone and Speed and slaps "Neutron 3" on it and then when it peaks over 0db they solve that with a limiter. The whole relay thing is exactly the same as routing groups of sounds to buses and adjusting the gain on those. The end result of Neutron 3's way of doing it "for you" is going to be adjusted every time anyway and it's going to detect sounds incorrectly, so you may just do it yourself the old way instead and get it just the way you want it to begin with. All of these different things are just starting points in a way where if you did it manually from the start you wouldn't have to "go back" as often. It's better to just learn properly how to do these things from scratch and you'll get much better control over what is happening and thus get a more satisfying result. If you want to learn how to mix and all that, learn from scratch.
I guess Neutron is centered around drums/bass/synth/vocal music. What if I do experimental harsh stuff? What if I do dull gothic synthwave? Should in former everything go into percussion then? Or in latter into synth? I realize lots of folks out there do drums-guitar-vocal stuff, but what about all the glitch, underground, psytrance, ambient, electronic etc. music?
Wow, the future is now! For me this is the ultimative answer to fully automated mastering services like landr. Good video, will definitely check this out, even if it would change my complete workflow i created over years and years...
Didn't hesitate, this was an automatic upgrade. I use Neutron 2 all the time to start a mix, it's a real time saver. I always go further in mixing and sometimes will remove Neutron 2 later, but it's always a great starting point and I often leave it as is.
So two questions.....1. When you say 'start a mix', you mean get your balancing and gain staging done, right? and then you sculpt and shape further with 3rd party stuff? 2. Why would you take it off later? Won't that undo whatever good neutron has done?
Ife Love I’m typically mixing my own songs, so yes, I’m getting a basic balance, gain staging, and whatever else Neutron does (typically some EQ, compression) to get a working mix while I’m still in the process of writing and tracking. I may keep what Neutron suggested, or at least re-visit the mix assistant, or I may decide I want to use an entirely different set of plugins later on. This is based on Neutron 2. I haven’t had time to really experiment with Neutron 3 yet, but I have a feeling it’s just going to make the process easier.
@@Highcastle_of_Tone Gotcha. I ask cuz I tried out neutron 2 a few times and ended up liking my results better with fab filter and uad. I got a fairly reasonable upgrade price that gave me vocalsynth2 and insight 2 that I didnt have so I'll go ahead and give this update a shot. Thanks
Im really excited hearing this. Getting into building my own project studio, at times I have definately had a sense of, what in the world have I gotten myself into. I find it difficult to focus on exceptional muscianship while worrying about the entire production aspect as well. This might be unnescary for producer focused on his craft but in my particular situation, automation is huge. It keeps my mind in the music where it needs to be.
I was thinking how annoying, I just upgraded to version 2 advanced several months ago.... but then that Sculptor feature, wow. Even if it’s mostly just a database of which parts of eq to tweak for different typical instruments/parts, that’s useful. I finally figured out “how to mix with eq” myself a year ago beyond basic stuff, and the simplest way I could summarize is to make each part “sound like a more forward version of itself” - and this video is using the same lingo and the results of that tool are just as I imagine!
I love everything, but the way sculptor was used gave me anxiety lol. I might use sculptor if I had it but i wouldn't use it so drastically. It sound like an intense filter and I've usually found it's better to do less to instruments than more, especially live instruments.
Im a professional working musician and writer, and very recently I’ve jumped into to making professional sounding demos of full songs completely on my own, and Neutron is such an amazing place to start with learning the basics of mixing and getting quality results fast. It’s a bit overwhelming at first but all the information and feedback you need is here. What I really appreciate is that it isn’t just a black box. There’s visualizations of everything that’s happening so you start to put the pieces together and can make tweaks on your own until it’s YOUR mix. Really amazing stuff. Helps me get my songs out the door way faster
Excellent step by step instructions. You really redefined my way of thinking around the "relay" and how it cooperates with the Visual Mixer and Neutron 3. So happy :)
Was drawn to this for its ability to see masking, yet after watching you make some pretty extreme EQ adjustments from the information in the masking meter there was exactly the same size orange bars before and after, so looks like masking is still just as dominant despite the huge EQ cuts, bells, and boosts. someone please explan

Nice!!! But no solo or mute function in the virtual mixer that's a pity or I didn't see that and in studio one the track names are not taken over when I insert a relay why????? this disturbs the workflow considerably!!! A button to lock in the virtual mixer would be nice to have for example the kick when I move it stays in the middle.
"Dynamic Note" seems to be a cool and useful feature - and the side chain problem is solved much better now, than it was before in Neutron 2 (paticularly when using Cubase as a host) - but with the "automix"-function / "Mix Assistent" I have my problems in this version - I guess it´s just beginning - maybe in future versions, e.g. Neutron 4 or 5 I´ll like it ;-)

The part I seem to have missed is the part after the balance phase, then into the next section. What happened to all of the relay plugins and how did the balance get written so that the relay plugins have been removed to place Neutron on the tracks? Were all of the tracks rendered after the balance portion?
The mix assistant is gain staging done for you by CPU? So what is the point of using it then changing it? Just do it all yourself without it, am i thinking right here?
Hi! Mix Assistant is great for establishing a baseline, and can save you a lot of time on the early parts of your mix. Try out a demo of Neutron 3 Advanced to see for yourself!
I hate demoing and I already bought it, even though it sucks that I just upgraded to Neutron 2 Advanced 4 or 5 months ago. Eager to see how it does on its auto suggested mix levels! (See, I followed my own comment above, no think, just upgrade, hehe. But seriously, the way that Sculptor sounds and was described is exactly how I have internalized the eq part of mixing!)
I bought the Standard version: there is no Mixer Assistant. And no separate Standard user manual to help get the most out of it. The Standard ? help links all pint to the Advanced help pages. At the moment, Standard seems no better than a replacement for my DAW mixer window. Any ideas how to use Standard? (Or should I start saving for the upgrade to Advanced?)
Does the balance assistant need to be done dry : before effects like reverb and delay are added to each track? Should you add relay to just tracks, or to group buses as well?
Hello! You can absolutely use balance assistant with tracks that have some sort of effects on them. You can actually hear that a few of the tracks in this demo do have some reverb on them. As for using Relay on groups, you can certainly experiment with it. I'd say it would be best to just put it on individual tracks so that you can take full advantage of what it can do for you. @@sweetwater even after heavy saturation/compression/eq'ing? At 0db it would be clipping a ton. Would it still work if everything is balanced at a lower db? Thinking that db consistency is the metric here but it's hard to tell without any knowledge of the underlying algorithm at work.
The need for profit? My personal opinion is that iZotope have created too much software, too many upgrades too often. I am confused and think I will go back to my older and simple plugins (like PSP Audio`s VintageWarmer 2) and use my ears instead of combining ten iZotope plugins that «talk to each other» and make me passive.
While money is the obvious answer, there is also the different applications for those suites. Ozone is mostly for "mastering" and Neutron is for "mixing", to summarize it.
Grear demo! I have been using Neutron for a while now and really like it. However, if they simply addressed the CPU-load issues with Neutron 3 it would be worth the price of admission, alone. The new features look cool, too.
@@BeattapeFactory lol wait, are you implying that this plugin is for people that have mixing skills? The pink noise thing is kinda silly, but even with its little value, its only for setting levels... you still need to have mixing skills to finish the other 90% of your mix.

Am I the only one wondering why he had to manually change a kick drum from musical to percussion? Go to about 8:35 and watch what he does. Why can't the software read the title of the track file and determine that it's a kick drum and should therefore be classified as percussion? Could that be included in an update or will we have to wait until next edition to get track title scour feature? It's still a great and useful program/plugin. It just seems that the classification function could have been a little more intuitive.
Braden Harwood well what do you want the software to do, use machine learning to categorise it, or read the title? Everyone names their tracks differently and there are dozens of languages and naming conventions, having machine learning categories it is the most neutral way.
You know, things would probably be cheaper if there weren't so many pirates out there. But rest assured, even if you do have to pay a bit more - it's worth it. I basically use Waves and Izotope only for Mastering. Fab Filter and Sugar Bytes for everything else.
Thank you for the insights on how to approach using these plugins. Seriously, though, why choose such a terrible song in the beginning? I don't get it. Amateur, repetitive, lame drum sample patterns, and non-musicians mumbling repetitive, out-of-tune drek. It was truly painful to make it all the way through this otherwise great tutorial. How about making one using real musicians and a song that goes somewhere. I mean this in a positive way. The other sections were great choices!
Hi Harry...with Reason 10 does Neutron work in a similar manner as with Logic in this tutorial? i.e. do you just apply the "Relay" plugin on every channel in the mixer and run it on the master track?
Thanks for your interest! While the machine learning isn't perfect, it can certainly pick out melodic lines in certain frequency bands. The "buckets" Geoff refers to in the videos are fairly broad, and you can certainly have unconventional instrumentation that can be housed in the Musical, Bass, or Percussion buckets. If you see that the software has not correctly identified something like, say a sitar, you can very easily move it to the appropriate bucket. The software works as a VST so it would operate just fine in Cubase. Feel free to give us a call if you have any other questions on Neutron or any other software applications. I get a crashes if I have audio buffer overuns in Studio One 4.5 when trying to use Neutron 3. Increasing the audio buffer (so it doesn't overrun) fixed the stability.

I love neutron 3 but I have a question with masking meter. I am a beginner. So first I put relays on all tracks. As I understand, I can only compare masking on 1 neutron track one with one other tracks at a time.? For example, I can unmask bass and drums only? What if I want to unmask my vocals or guitars to all tracks? I am worried about masking from any track When I check for masking, is there a way to put neutron on one track and compare it to all tracks? I don't want to get a CPU overland. What if I bus all the other tracks to one aux track and compare the a neutron track to the total mix? Like the vocals to every other track? This should unmask that track. You can access to channel-strip functions like high pass filters, phase, mono controls, pan, etc. You can gain stage as well, but it won't do it for you. Drewlar Beats very delayed reply but if you haven’t found a way. For me I added relay to a empty audio and midi track and saved them as the default midi and audio track, then every time I add a new track it’s there.

That said, if you are doing classical recording with a more traditional approach (minimal mic setup to cover an entire orchestra) some of the multitrack oriented tools within Neutron may not be of use to you.
