The Jūseige: Verses Reiterating the Vows from the Sūtra of Infinite Life

I, the greatest vows, have thus willed,
And shall reach Bodhi’s highest plane.
If these vows remain unfulfilled,
Bodhi I would never attain.
I shall be the great provider,
Throughout many countless ages.
If in saving I should tire,
I would not ascend the stages.
When Buddhahood is in my ken,
If my Name is not to be heard
In the cosmos’ quarters ten,
Then my Bodhi won’t have occurred.
Selflessly practicing the Way,
With deep knowledge and wisdom pure,
Aiming for Bodhi on this day,
To teach all Dharma I assure.
My wondrous power, by its light,
And brightens all lands, shining plain,
Removes the kleshas, dark as night,
Liberating beings from pain.
The Wisdom Eye, I shall unlock,
This dark ignorance I shall end.
The paths of evil, I shall block,
And to siddhi I shall transcend.
My merits to goals aligning,
My light, throughout, will radiate.
The sun and moon both outshining,
The stars’ light it will obfuscate.
Opening the Dharma storehouse,
I’ll bestow its treasures on each.
Among all beings, I will rouse,
And, with the Lion’s Roar, I’ll teach.
Worshipping buddhas transmundane,
I’ll be endowed with every good.
Vows and wisdom I’ll fully gain;
Over all, I’ll have masterhood.
As Buddha’s wisdom without bounds
Has no place its light cannot reach,
So my merit, and wisdom’s sounds
Shall equal those of buddhas each.
If, truly, these vows I’ll fulfil
May this world quake in many ways;
And may devas with their skill,
Rain down rare and wondrous bouquets.
