🌿 Jūti - Radi! 🌿

A very rough translation for those who are interested. Though I only scratch the surface - some context is needed to better appreciate meaning. In Latvia (but similar traditions could and to some extent are still found in neighboring countries and further) the summer solstice is celebrated with fire (so bonfire is an integral part of this celebration). Though Christianity came here and baptized pagans, this tradition still to this day is recognized and is a national holiday. Furthermore - the shortest night of the year is referred also to as the night of Jānis. Jānis - even not so long ago was the most popular man's name in Latvia. In current times - the namesday (yes - Latvia is one of odd countries celebrating people's namesdays) of Jānis also coincides with the summer solstice (24th of June). Yes - the astronomical summer solstice occurs earlier but it is what it is - some hard-core purists stick to actual astronomical timing, while the majority go with the calendar. Another peculiarity in this region is that around these dates - summer solstice in general - a rainfall is typical. So very often in the evening of celebration it would pour rain. So that is why "rain is not needed" not to ruin the celebration. Also you will hear a repeating refrain Līgo Līgo - which means "sway" (loosely) and also is an integral part of summer-solstice related folk-songs (Līgo-songs). I think this is bare minimum of info needed to somewhat understand what is going on - now to the song itself: Part I (Wading in the meadow) Rain don't fall Rain don't fall Līgo Līgo Today the rain is not needed Līgo Līgo My Jāņu-flowers will get wet (Jāņu Flowers - are flowers in the meadow which are in blossom during this time - they are picked to decorate oneself etc.) Līgo Līgo The Jāņu children will get wet (Jāņu children or children of Jānis in this context are people generally involved in the celebration of the solstice or "Jāņi") Līgo Līgo I rushed in the night of Jāņi Līgo Līgo to the spring (stream) to look for Līgo Līgo If I could see inside Līgo Līgo My plower of bread (plower of bread in this context obviously is the future husband - breadwinner) Līgo Līgo Part II (Wading within oneself) Take Jānīti a black horse (in this context Jānītis is the diminutive form of Jānis - a real person named Jānis - a host of celebration, for example) Līgo Līgo Ride around my rye-field Līgo Līgo So that the warlock (wizard) didn't put a spell on it Līgo Līgo So that a grudger (envy person) didn't begrudge it Līgo Līgo In the night of Jāņi I looked for Līgo Līgo Where the evening star was rising Līgo Līgo Where the evening star was rising Līgo Līgo There's my bride growing up (basically the evening star is used as a guide showing where to look for a future bride) Līgo Līgo Part III (Wading across time) People were saying - and that was true Līgo Līgo Short was the night of Jāņi Līgo Līgo Darkness on the one side Līgo Līgo A pale green light - on the other (side) (Though we don't have true "white-nights" as further up north - still around summer solstice, the night is indeed very short - withouth pitch darkness) Līgo Līgo Think-Do Feel-Create

LMT or Latvian national telecommunication company is a big sponsor of song and dance festival and other patriotic projects, and they often team up with different artists and sponsor musical or other genre projects. They like to make big statements and something like their own art so this is one of the projects that they have done. This is a special tribute/celebration of summer solstice and im 98% sure that this piece was made specifically for this project. This song hasn’t been released as a single and probably won’t be, since Tautumeitas (Aurelija is a member of this band) already released an album this year. But the piece isn’t complete without the video so I guess - all or nothing.

The title says Feel and Create, Awaken the feeling (the spirit) of Jāņi within you! Jāņi/Līgo simply put is a celebration of summer solstice (midsummer). Nowadays as Christmas it is attributed to certain date - a night between 23rd and 24th of June is attributed to Līgo celebration/midsummer celebration. Moreover, in Latvia people celebrate name's day - consequently 23rd of June is a name's day for Līga (one of the most popular woman's names of olden days), while 24th of June is a name's day for Jānis (one of the most popular man's names of even not so long ago). Thus, sometimes 23rd of June is refereed to as a the evening of Līgo and the 24th as the day of Jānis. I am not quite willing to translate all the words. But these are more or less traditional Līgo songs about self-reflection, asking for blessing of higher power and nature etc.

@vesma25

Re-phrasing another, great comment: Līgo means "to sway", but not to just simply move. Līgo means to sway, to move in harmony with ALL things around - with trees, with stars, with fire, with other people. It means to be in harmony within and without. Also, it means "to sing"- especially these Līgo songs that are sung only few nights during Summer Solstice. I hope, this helps.

Yes, that’s true that “līgo” means “sway” in modern Latvian, but by no means it is somehow directly related to oak trees. There is a lot of discussions and theories, what is the true meaning and origin of this ancient word, but unfortunately any of them can be 100% proved nowadays. Nevertheless you are quiet save to think that “līgo” is a very ancient Latvian refrain of Summer Solstice (Jāņi) songs, as the word “līgo” has been used and continues to be used to sing exclusively for the celebrations of Jāņi year after year on the 21st-24th June. The oak trees have also a lot to do with these celebrations, as men wear crowns made of oak branches, but the celebration itself is more about the Sun, the Earth, fertility, coming harvest and joy. “Līgo” is something like Latvian “Amen” or “blessed be” of Sommer Solstice. Might be that its original meaning is close to “being gorgeous and fulfilled”. And if you hear “līgo” in a Latvian song, you can be sure, that the song is about Summer Solstice.
