Oliver North was working for the government, when you dig deep enough. Just the dark side of government that is veiled behind the phrase conspiracy theory. So, ultimately, when the chips came down, it was either kill him, or let him go. Prosecuting him publicly was simply not going to happen due to the threat of secrets that it would unveil. Barry Seal is an example of the same business, only they took the other option. He was working for the same shadow government, he should have been involved in public trials, and he was solved another way.
