Gervais, it seems there were two types of minuets in the classical period. One was for stately dancing in the courts and castles. These always started on the beat. The second kind was considerably more rambunctious and faster. They began on the upbeat. Most of these came out of Eastern Europe: the eastern German states, Austria-Hungary, etc. It's easy to tell the second kind : If "Are YOU the o'REILly who RUNS this hoTEL?" fits, then you've got the second kind. Interesting point: Mozart used the first type almost exclusively, and Haydn used the second kind just about all the time.
The Rheumatic Musician Whilst the Opus 18 symphonies were indeed first published around the time of JC’s death in 1782, they were in fact composed much earlier, probably over the 1770’s. They are not therefore ‘...probably one of his last works’
Actually, a lot of composers during these times composed there work earlier, but published them years later if not decades later after they were supposed to of not after their death. Kind of sad to think they never thought their music would still be appreciated hundreds of years later.
This movement had previously been Romanticised and sentimentalised, rather in the same way Pachelbel's canon also had been, by performers imposing dragging tempi and heavy, prosaic textures. This rendition returns it to a lighter, sunnier, more Enlightenment-era aesthetic.
I can't say I am impressed with this performance. The tempo in the first two movements is way too fast imo. What, are they paying the musicians by the minute and want to get it over quickly or something?? In particular the second movement loses a lot at that speed. Truly this is one of the more elegant second movements in 18th century music, but at that speed all the elegance is lost as the conductor rushes to get to the end. The beautiful suspension at the end of the main phrase should be emphasized for its gentle pulling on the listeners' emotions, not just rolled over quickly. Poorly conducted imo.
