Leyendecker! I am embarrassed to admit I had never before heard of him. Whereas Norman Rockwell presented a more wholesome "Mayberry-ish" depiction of America, Leyendecker was in a completely different "art-deco-ish" league. The chiseled features of the athletes reminded me of Greco-Roman-Florentine sculptures, and the debonair, stylish clothing of his subjects were masterpieces, I feel. I must learn more.

Don't be embarrassed...I do art for a living and only recently learned his named. Though I've admired his work for years. Just didn't think to look into who was behind it. Like Rockwell, he had his Americana side too. Their biggest differences, from my POV, is their age difference and sexuality. Leyendecker was living his BEST life in the 1920s while Rockwell was just a whipper snapper. Also, I think Rockwell was from a small town. Maybe? :-)

Thanks for the correction and POV, Gregg. The AI narrator did better than I would have. I’ve been pronouncing it “LAY-en-deck-er.” But I’m originally from the South so tend to draw things out. One of the reasons I prefer this method. lol

He younger, straighter protegé took all the glory, but Rockwell was super deferential during his day: “I began working for The Saturday Evening Post in 1916 and Leyendecker was my God.” Norman Rockwell Ironically, Leyedecker had a younger brother who was ALSO a Post illustrator. Their work is so similar I've been finding lots of it mislabelled all over the interwebs. Big brother got the spotlight in that family.

Thanks for such a beautifully produced homage to one of my favorite artist & illustrators. As a young artist his works were a big influence on me, especially with his techniques and compositions. His Art Deco "colored" creations really stood out amongst all the black & white photography for that period. In my life, the words sung by Nat King Cole, really puts it perfectly, J.C. Leyendecker truly was and is.... Unforgettable ❣

And so bloody prolific. He seemed to be able to do it all...and did it for YEARS. What I didn't mention is his younger brother was also a talented illustrator. Not sure about the brother's sexuality, but they both worked at the Post for a time.

G'morning Clint he was a very accomplished artist of the human form from the images you've posted. I personally enjoyed the sports themed images the most. I wonder if 'that look' was his secret desires away from his otherwise ethereal male look? The image of the youth getting his first(?) grown up suit so reminded me of my first grown up suit too. Back then it was custom to only have casual trousers and coat till you were a teen then you were taken for a first suit, for best occasions, I remember it so well, in time for Easter 😎 Cheers DougT 🇫🇴

From my reading, Leyendecker was less secret about his desires than most in his day. His New York gay parties in the Roaring 20s sound like a hoot...surprised he got away with as much as he did for as long as he did. A long, productive career. Always loved his work, before I even knew his name or story. Cheers to you and your first suit!

@@CollidePressToo Of course I grew up in a woolen cloth manufacturing area and a major tailoring city close by. It was easy to buy a 'suit length' of cloth and so many tailors who would come to your house to measure you up and do a fitting before the suit duly arrived. It marked your transition from a boy to a youth, your first real suit. These days that doesn't happen 😔 Rose tinted spectacle reminiscences time again 😄 Cheers DougT 🇫🇴

His brother, Frank LINE-decker, did similar work, so be careful when looking at their work. Both made great illustrations of beautiful men!

Thanks for the correction and warning. I did find several works credited as by J.C. that were signed Frank X. Amazing they both were so talented. And that people can’t read a signature. Frank’s was very legible. J.C.’s very original. lol

I think Rockwell was also more popular because he had more humor in his work in general, and I think people responded to that.

Agreed. Especially after the Great Depression and WWII, the folksy humor/nostalgia of Rockwell was definitely more popular than the sophisticated style so popular in the Leyendecker’s work. Love they became at least friendly. Rockwell called Leyendecker a “god.”

That's AMAZING. I too have been a fan of many of his works, never knowing it was all from one man. With a great story. Probably the most successful gay artist until Warhol came around.

Every bit as good as Rockwell, and in many ways, much better. Both portrayed a idealized American culture, but Rockwell's art always suggested a castrated, Puritanical, ideal. Leyendecker, on the other hand, infused almost every illustration with a simmering, seductive sexuality - particularly male sexuality... and he not only portrayed it but celebrated its beauty. I had never heard of this guy. Thanks for the video!

They were definitely different kind of people. Amazingly, they seem to have been good colleagues and friends, despite a ~20 year age difference. Rockwell definitely looked up and respected him.

There was the Gibson girl,who epitomized the beauty and charm of the girl of the gay nineties, and then there was the arrow collar man who did the same for boys. Leyendecker was the artist behind him. Oh, btw, Rockwell was a protégés of his. Also, you left out the subversive quality of his homoeroticism. He was a very glamorous figure of the era something like photographers Steven Meisel, Bruce Webber or Avedon were of theirs. it’s sad but maybe not surprising that no films have been made about him but there should be. His studio was in a building on Bryant park in NYC. The building is still there.

I went to see the Norman Rockwell exhibit, great snapshots of Americana. I did not know about Leyendecker, but you can certainly see Tom of Finland in this art. 😉

I do think there's something to our art tastes having gaydar. That said, I just love looking at men. And women too. Though I do tend to look at them...differently. As for types of men, I'm an equal opportunity eye candy fan. "Handome" is subjective and tall...eh, I'm tall enough and don't see anything that special about it except my feet hang off most beds and clothing options are more limited. :-p

I’d love to see a biopic or doc. Given Rockwell’s popularity, a LOT of talented artists who worked at The Post aren’t as remembered. I do think his German heritage and name likely contributed to him not being remembered as much as his homosexuality. I think. Still need to do more research. Thanks for watching!

Leyendecker's work is wonderful. another amazing (and queer) -artist who possibly didn't get enough recognition... because of that? Seems the less you lied about a factor of your life the less history wanted to know...and now everyone wants to know everything!...when it's often far too late to get information from the people involved. JCL would be a good subject for an incisive and loving (and lovingly illustrated) documentary or biographic film. to watch a film that itself looks like a Leyendecker illustration would be a feast for the eyes!! it'd be sumptuous, sexy and vey tactile. this feels like a step toward that.

Given how much his Post colleagues (including Rockwell) respected Leyendecker, I think it might have as much to do with post-WWI sentiment about Germans as it did about his homosexuality. He was fairly open (in NYC) during his life, but not sure how much anyone anywhere else knew (or cared) at that point. But his name...German. :-p “I began working for The Saturday Evening Post in 1916 and Leyendecker was my God.” Norman Rockwell Also, Rockwell was sooooo popular, he likely dimmed the light on a bunch of equally-talented artists and illustrators of his era. Many of whom worked for the Post (and similar magazines).
