I'm glad you break down the lyrics of this beautiful song. The last verse was J Hope, not Suga. But guys you definitively need to watch Tear Live at Wembley, to feel the real emotion behind those lyrics !

TEAR is a very emotional song. We thought at first it's a breakup song but once we found out, ARMY's aren't far from getting teary eyes. Yoongi aka Suga said that this song is about the members. Back in 2018, they were very burned out. That's when they got really big in the US and internationally. So they thought about disbanding and this was the song Yoongi wrote with RM and J-Hope. When he showed this song to the members they cried all together. Thankfully they decided to walk to the future together 😭💜

The live performance of this song in Wembley is iconic. The raw emotions from all three rappers will hit you hard. Please watch it, either on or off camera, because the live performance really takes it to another level. BTW, the first rapper is RM, the second Suga, and the third is J-hope. The song was originally written by Suga when they were considering disbanding due to the pressures of fame, in 2018. When he played it for the members, they all cried. Later on RM and J-hope added their verses to complete the song. When they received their first award (BBMA) in the US in 2017, their popularity skyrocketed in the West, and along with it the pressure and spotlight, as well as hate and xenophobia and racism. They were so busy to the point that they only had one day off per month for a while. They were exhausted physically and mentally, especially in early 2018. Fortunately, they decided against disbanding. BTS released an anthology album in 2022 called "Proof", so I think you can just explore their discography through it. It has 3 CDs. In CD 1, you get the title track for each album, chronologically, so you can hear how their sound evolve over the years. In CD 2, each member pick a solo song and a unit song, so you'll get more varied musical styles. CD 3 contains demos and unreleased songs and is only available in CD format.

9:34 its tear ( tears frm eyes) for RM, Tear ( tearing apart) for Suga and Fear for J hope. THIS song was written thinking about their breakup, during 2018 when BTS thought they cannot bear all the attention and hates anymore. However the members fought through it and became more successful in future

You understood the lyrics perfectly. This is the first reaction video I've seen to this song where the person reacting actually took time with the double meaning of the song and the lyrics. The last rapper is jhope. Rm uses tear as in sadness or regret to explain what goodbyes are. Suga uses tear as in torn apart or heartbreak to explain goodbyes. And jhope at the end describes goodbyes as a fear. Of course to understand the real meaning of the lyrics you need the context of when this song was written. The song was written in 2018 when bts was going through one of their most emotionally draining periods in their life. They rose to fame inbetween 2017 and 2018. The meteoric rise put a lot of pressure on the members who were already overworked. They all wanted to quit the band but none of them could bring themselves to do it cus they grew too attached... so they individually suffered silently. In their memoire they explained how all of the members were on edge and wasn't communicating. They also had a difficult time making music... it was then that suga/agust d produced the melody for this song.. He completed it along with rm and jhope who all wrote the lyrics towards the members in the band. Then they played the song for the 4 vocalists who all cried. So this breakup they are talking about is the breakup of the band. Its an imagined scenario of what it would feel like to them if they actually disbanded.

This is one of ARMY’s favorite songs bcz as others have explained is about Bangtan contemplating disbanding. We never knew how close they came until Jin discussed it at 2018 MAMA awards when they won the AOTY Daesung. The lyrics cut like a knife especially how they use both meanings of tear (tear - crying, and tear to rip apart).

Great reaction. I won't repeat what other Armys have explained about this track though you must watch it live at Wembley. I know you wanted recommendations to do a BTS musical journey but I suggest you watch Taylor's Guide which gives an insight to their back story. Also Boracity Magazine's channel has just released a video essay which is an introduction to BTS's discography chapter 1 which you may find helpful in making a selection of tracks in order. Thanks. Great to see UK reactors to BTS. Please keep going!

It was really great seeing you break down the lyrics like that, I loved your interpretation. (Fun fact, the raw ending was actually done by j-hope! But I can definitely see how you can think it’s agust d’s voice) Yes, it’s definitely a double! Tear = both crying and ripping. You can hear them pronounce it differently in the “you’re my tear, you’re my tear” part. (Also: “you’re my fear”). They wrote this song back in late 2017/early 2018, when BTS was seriously considering disbanding as a group. So the lyrics are written about the members, which would also be a breakup, just not necessarily in a romantic sense. They shared a little but about their thoughts back then, how the pressure of their astronomical rise to fame and the constant eyes on them was so much to bear, how they were terrified of the pressure and expectations, and how extreme their work schedule was (they’d only get one free day a month sometimes, sometimes working 12 or up to 16 hours a day). They all cried together when the rappers played the song for the vocalists. They decided to stay together and are still going strong now (and are giving themselves more vacation these days to stay healthy and sane) but it must have been a really tough time for them. If you’re interested in a “journey”, I recommend going through their “love yourself” trilogy in album order (“Love yourself: Her”, “love yourself: Tear”, and “Love yourself: Answer”) to get a feel for what albums are structured like. They love concept albums and telling a narrative story with the tracklist :)

also remember the constant backlash and those haters every day hate train affiliatung bts to everything happening specially the japan issue.

You really nicely caught meaning of the lyrics, and tear-tear double meaning. Though it's song written about what members were relieving when they were contemplating disbanding (break up) BTS wrotes even personal lyrics in such universal way that anyone can relate

I would highly recommend Taylor Mari's "Guide to BTS: The Bangtan 7" introduction video for you both as a future reaction. It's a long video, but we would love it if you took the time to record and upload your reaction in full. It will give you a great intro to the group as well as what each member brings to the team. It's heavy on the reading but also has teasers of various works by the group and as individuals that might give you an idea what you'd like to react to next. Great reaction! I've been following your channel for a bit and I love how thoughtful you two get about what the lyrics could mean. In a sense, this IS a breakup song, but not quite in the way you interpreted it. I think it could honestly be interpreted to be about the ending of any close relationship, but in this case SUGA originally conceived this song as being about the time when BTS struggled with thoughts about disbanding. I've seen other comments explain this well so I won't say more. BTS has a history of portraying various types of relationships in their work including friendships, romantic relationships, and even the relationship we have with ourselves so it can be hard sometimes to pick out which relationship they're talking about. I find that they have a unique way of characterizing platonic relationships and the relationship with the self that is not often used in Western media, so it took me a while to see that some songs were not what I originally thought. When I started watching their interviews and other content as well as listening to the albums in their entirety, I think that gave me a lot more context to interpret their music than when I was just randomly encountering songs in isolation.

Gah! 😊 When there's no MV please always go for a live performance!! You're missing out if not I promise. There's a channel called Enjoy BTS More, she puts subtitles on lives and is legit terrific. This song gives everyone goosebumps because Yoongi wrote it when they considered disbanding. They're talking to each other. In fact after Dark & Wild they rarely write about love/couple relationships. They're either addressing haters or talking to each other or army. 💜🇨🇦

This song was created when BTS were considering disbandment. When Suga played it every member was crying. I think when you break up with someone and really want to forget him/her it is not only because of a toxic relationship but also because you really love that person so much. It is just like BTS members who love each other dearly.... btw, I love your reactions... please do more of BTS songs

Honestly speaking I've not listened to this song in months because of how it always gets my crying... In 2018 they started getting really big in the US and that ofc brought a lot of problems. As the members said we will never know or understand what happened at that time but they were highly contemplating on disbanding. Most of the members even thought of quitting music. Jin mentioned in their book that if even one member was going to leave the group he was gonna leave the entertainment industry entirely and do something else for a living. At that time Suga, RM and Jhope wrote this song for the members. Suga mentioned in their documentary that this seems like a breakup song but it's not... he also said when he played the song for the members they all just cried together

Guys, you have to see this one Live. Yes, it's a break up song, but it was written by Suga and the other 2 rappers (RM, J-Hope) when they were considering disbandment during a really hard time for all of them (early 2018). If you can find the live with all the green lights and I think the black outfits - that one is the best in my opinion. I don't know the location. You can really see the emotion and passion they perform this with. Thankfully, they all pulled through whatever they were going through, or I may never have found them.

BTS are never scared of using auto tune to make the song experience better, not to hide any faults or what not. SUGA was the member who uses auto-tune it mostly as a form of expression of his feelings, a change of pov in a song or to improve the experience on a song. one of the famous one is in Interlude: Shadow, where he used the auto tune to express the pov of his Shadow talking to him.

BTS rarely writes love or breakup songs, which makes them stand out from other k-pop bands. Their lyrics are always deeper than they seem. This is actually a song written to the band members themselves (as you’ll learn by the other comments here).

I think autotune is only a negative thing if it is employed to cover up inabilities of the vocalist. This original purpose of autotune was to enable less competent vocalists to sound better. But very competent artists have employed it as artistic expressions or embellishments. For this reason, I say evaluate its use based on why it is being employed. Suga is well known for using autotune to create sounds he finds appealing. He does not need it as a crutch but a color on his palette. P>S> the ending was 100 percent not Agust D, ha ha. It was J Hope.

The song was written when they were seriously considering breaking up the group. This was back in 2018. Their fame skyrocketed in the western industry during 2017 and the fame put pressure and affected them negatively. They didn't have time to relax properly and they were exhausted mentally too.
